Still Having a Bad Day? Exchange Your Rants For Hugs Here!
Kaymyth replied to Silverblade5's topic in General Discussion
I'm at work right now (I know, working on T-day; we have to pick one major holiday to work - such is the curse of working at [REDACTED]) and the work servers do some strange things with some images on the Shard. About half of the images that get posted up just show as "gobbledygook.jpg" to me. Meaning that I can't see these glorious images that I'm supposed to upvote. -
Oh, definitely. And then they compound the issue by saying, "We have to get the bullet out!" and go digging into that complex networks of blood vessels and nerve endings to pull out a projectile that was probably helping to staunch the flow of blood. You know the best place to get shot? If you have to take a bullet, best to have it lodge into one's, ah, gluteus maximus. Lots of fat and muscle tissue right there, no major blood vessels.
-
Yeah, despite what movies and TV tell you, it's actually pretty common to leave bullets in place. Trying to dig them out could cause a lot more damage, and open the wound up to infection (the heat of a bullet firing sterilizes it). The exception to that is when it's in or near a skeletal joint. There's something about the biology of the joint function that opens a person up to lead poisoning (most bullets are still made out of lead) if it's left there.

I think she just means that you never set your gender on your profile.

Yeah, I was giggling madly at that last scene. It was probably supposed to be super-creepy, but it just came off as one of the most ridiculous moments in NuWho.

I feel ya there. I got mine stolen, and then I couldn't decide what to use as second choice. And then my lack of decision became my second choice.

*Shadows of Self Spoilers* Anyone Else Think Harmony is Messed up?
Kaymyth replied to mattig89ch's topic in Mistborn
I actually meant Brandon's master plan, not Trell's. -
Thanks! She will get better-trained as the book goes on, but I wanted to have her more or less starting from square one. Ahh, the lengths we go to in order to avoid Mary Sue-dom. ("Hmm. How do I keep Eva from getting too cocky too early in? I know! I'll throw her off a train!") If you have more feedback you'd like to give, by all means, PM it over. This scene, minus a couple of tweaks that I know need to be made, is basically in the same form it's going to be when it goes off to my beta readers.

Allomancy in space is part of his master plan. -
It's only an excerpt up so far. The whole thing probably won't be up online till after the first of the year. Sure! http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/48516-nanoers-unite/ It's down a ways on page 3.

So, to anyone who's interested, I posted an excerpt of Swift as Steel up on the Nano thread. It's still got a couple of problems, but the second draft version is definitely superior to the first. In related news, I think I need to make some sort of appeasement offering/bribe to the Word Repetition Fairies to get them to leave me alone. It's amazing how completely invisible that stuff is to me when I'm in the process of writing. And then I go back and read, and the blips fly out and bite my nostrils. I...would never actually do something that evil to anyone I liked. Or worked with. Or worked near. The level of sheer evil necessary to deserve the horror of one of those devices has not yet been matched by any mere mortal in this office.

I think it's a lot more likely that the Southerners are going to get a look at the Basin and all of its fertile resources and say, "Um, yeah, we want that." People wanting what other people have is often the real root cause of war. -
.... One of these days, you are going to come to work and find every office supply on your desk covered in googly eyes.

Extra-confused, since I know I had told at least a few people that I was gonna go with Mythical. Mashadar beat me to it, though, so now I have to think of something else. ...I am too sleepy to think tonight. Will come up with something tomorrow, maybe.

Man, I still do too much word repetition. It's better, but there's two or three things in there that need to be fixed. This stuff is completely invisible to me when I'm actually writing. Ah, well, that's what beta readers are for, right?

...it's times like these that I totally ship TwiLyght/Kobold. Just remember: You're good enough, you're smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like you! I...I thought that it didn't start for two more days... Hi, T! What?! YOU STOLE MY NAME! (Seriously, Mythical, Kaymyth...now what am I gonna do?)

I could totally be on board with this Shard theory. The Shard of Generosity, perhaps? -
Did somebody say excerpts? Some of you read the first draft version of this on the Camp Nano site. Here's the revision version of that same scene snippet (though I think I'm cutting it slightly longer, giving it a bit more lead-in), now new and improved!

You know, I probably should have made the Miles/Wolverine connection before now. Thank you, dear sir, for giving me a mental image of Miles popping gold-plated claws.

The Lord Ruler's empire wasn't actually at the geographical north pole. If it had been, we would have had some really weird day/night cycles in the original trilogy. But that's why he raised the ashmounts - to give people some protection from the sun at reasonable latitudes. The (extremely common) confusion comes about because the Well of Ascension was the magnetic north pole, LTR didn't realize that moving the Well would drag magnetic north with it. -

He actually wrote the two books concurrently and then told us about it afterwards. As the esteemable Mr. Sanderson put it, "I was having trouble getting back into writing Shadows of Self, so I wrote its sequel to get me warmed up." -
His "What If?" column has a rather hilariously accurate prediction of what the robot uprising might actually look like. The highlight is a Roomba uselessly whirring around and bumping into things.

I can live with that. Take it from someone who's been there, yes, it's annoying as heck all through your twenties. But I can honestly say that now that I'm in my late 30's, being constantly taken for a decade younger is a glorious thing. I am! And probably lots more.
