  1. Right...so then base metals that are impure, or alloys whose mixes are a little off, would be keys with burrs on them or teeth that aren't quite in the right place. They'll open the door, but it takes some wiggling and it might damage the lock Allomancer in the process.
  2. So, yeah, looking back at SaS....typo on the first page. Oh, and I thought of, like, two things that I should've adjusted before sending it off. Argh! I am terrible and lazy and OH HELLO BRAIN WEASELS HOW ARE YOU TODAY?
  3. Updated my avatar! I'm ready to be me for a while, instead of Eva.

I'm going to relax for a bit, I think. My current plan is to give the readers the month to poke the story, and then I'll do the final edits after I've had a chance to read Bands of Mourning. And...then probably start working on the sequel, I suppose.

Also, I have cosplay projects to work on for conventions that start in the spring.

  4. The second draft of my Mistborn Era 2 fanfic is off to beta readers!
  5. Um...click on "Gallery" up at the top of the page and then click on the "Upload" button? I don't know, I haven't actually done it myself.
  6. And here I was thinking it was the Random Downvote Fairy.
  7. Outside of sticky notes, I find that keeping a list of characters is handy, especially for those minor ones that unexpectedly pop back up from time to time (what was that guy's name again...?) Heck, I even made use of an online genealogy tool in order to make Eva's family tree. The Valdorn clan got a bit complicated on me.
  8. Gallifreyans aren't much on decoration, are they? It's always so slow around here on Fridays. Not that I should really be slacking off, but I've been super-productive today and already blown past my daily goal on my current project. And there's downtime while I wait for each machine to download its software. So I wind up with 1-2 minute bursts of wanting entertainment.
  9. Regarding posting images: I've noticed that the extension type error actually has to do with trying to copy the image directly into your post. If you can upload it either to the gallery here, or to a site like Photobucket, you can then use the Image button on the posting console to slap the link in and voila! You will have an image. You do have to use the button for it to work properly, though. For some reason posting a link to a YouTube video, though, just embeds it automatically. I don't know why. (Chaos probably does, but it's a silly enough question I haven't wanted to waste his time with it.)
  10. Sticky notes! No, really. Granted, the first draft of Swift as Steel was completely pantsed; I had a vague idea of what was going on, but a lot of things were developed on the fly. When I sat down to do the rewrite, I went through and put every scene onto a Post-It, along with what chapter number it was in. They were color-coded; I decided that if there were too many secondary colors in between Major Plot Point scenes, then something in there needed to be cut/condensed. I rearranged post-its. I renumbered chapters. I deleted scenes, combined some together, and added a couple new ones. And then I taped them down onto a piece of notebook paper in order, putting down my new chapter numbers as I wrote. (My early chapters were way too short. I dropped from 33 to 20, and that's with a second draft that's fewer than 10,000 words shorter than the first.) So, first make a list of major plot points and/or scenes that you want to write. Take a few days to do it, as you'll remember and/or think of new things as you putter around your daily life. Then sit down and put them onto sticky notes and start to arrange them in some semblance of order. Expect things to change as you go; that's why they're on sticky notes and not inked in blood on a stone tablet. Use special post-its for your clever lines. Figure out where kind of where you want them (but be prepared for your characters to have minds of their own). Structure out your magic and figure out how to divvy up the exposition of how it works without loading too much into a single chapter. Use an entire wall for sticky notes if you have to! I <3 sticky notes.
  11. (Spoiler tagging for grossness.) Also, our IT department is just fantastic, I tell you. Last week: Me: "My CPU fan is making funny noises." Manager: *submits ticket* IT: *ignores ticket* This week: My computer: *restarts* "DANGER WILL ROBINSON! CPU FAN NOT DETECTED!" *refuses to boot* Me: "Augh!" Manager: *escalates ticket* Today: Some Guy From IT: "Yo, I'm ordering you a new power supply. It'll be here Monday." Me: "Um, that's great, except that it's my CPU cooling fan that died." Some Guy From IT: "Oh. OK, I'll order one of those, too! Thanks for the update!" (except his actual response was so riddled with typos that it made my eyes bleed)
  12. Well, under normal circumstances, alternate universes aren't supposed to be accessible by TARDIS. It happens now and then, but it's more the exception than the rule.
  13. Don't worry, Voidus, this only works if Doctor Who is Cosmere, too.
  14. There's also the Google directions from anywhere in the continental US to Hawaii. It tells you to kayak across the Pacific Ocean. Also, I remember reading somewhere a thing that I think is on the last Random Stuff thread, and I haven't worked out how to cross-quote. But: if Stormaggedon, Destroyer of Worlds is Obliteration, and my headcanon says that Adonalsium is a Time Lord artifact, does...does that make Reckoners Cosmere? (Please don't hurt me, Twi!)
  15. The early 2000 flares were the best. I have to confess, it's so hard for me to find jeans that fit me well (I don't have much of a natural hourglass shape at all) that I actually get the best results at thrift stores. Huge selection of cuts and styles all organized by size. I can find 5x the number of jeans that fit well and are in good condition in half the time as what I can find at a retail store. That's if I find anything at standard retail that fits at all. (So few brands acknowledge that my waist-hip-thigh ratio actually exists. It's maddening.)
  16. My chin whisker is back. Enjoy your existence while you can, single tiny hair! Tonight, it's to the tweezers with you!
  17. Drink more water and get plenty of potassium! (I get nighttime Charlie horses, too, sometimes. They're awful. And then my yelping usually wakes up poor James, too, so neither of us get sleep.)
  18. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I think the idea of Wayne's imitation abilities just being pure talent/skill is much more interesting than the notion that they're related to some sort of power. Sometimes people are just really, really good at a thing.
  19. Eh, I didn't when I was a teenager, either. Then I got older and more cynical, and stuff like that stopped bothering me. And even now it depends on context; my language is (usually) more polite around my mother.
  20. Calling all beta readers! The second draft of Swift as Steel is 1-2 nights from completion! If you're interested in telling me all of the things I did wrong so that I can fix them, please PM me your e-mail address, as well as what format you'd like the story in! (.doc, .odt, Google Doc, etc.)

  21. I'm switching my name back a bit early. Why? Because I'm am one, maybe two evenings away from finishing the second draft of Swift as Steel, and it's time to start roping in my beta readers. It's so much less confusing when I'm not an Ookla. I real-curse often enough that some of the people here would probably be shocked, shocked I say, to hear some of the things that come out of my mouth. Training fake curses into myself, though, helps keep me from accidentally getting in trouble at work. KITTEH! Kobold, I predict that you'll discover the next rep level at 32,768.
  22. Well, there it is. Rust/rusted/rusting has officially entered my vocabulary of nerd-related swear words I use without thinking about it, alongside frell and frak. I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY, SANDERSON. Edited to capture the elusive wild comma and tame it into place.
  23. I find it amusing that you're getting into the swing of things after NaNo has ended. I've been trying to do at least a little writing every day, usually right after I get home from work. I haven't really timed myself to see how fast I write, though.
  24. There's lots of stuff over in Creator's Corner, including a sub-board specifically for Sanderson fanfic. ....I will be posting a new thread there soon. Soooooon..... (Second draft 95% complete!)
  25. Hey, I was 15 once! You know, back in the Dark Ages. (OK, the early 90s, but same diff.) You ask this thing when we're nearing 400 pages of Random here.
