  1. I would agree with this in general, but what if we were to get a POV from Marsh? He certainly wouldn't refer to his own brother as "The Survivor". That's what I'm hoping this means - a Marsh POV in the AoL era. Or possibly it's a series of epigrams, written all at once before being separated out for individual chapters?
  2. Brandon Sanderson once wrote a "short story" that was 85K words long and formed the foundation for an entire new trilogy. Brandon Sanderson takes breaks from writing books by writing other books.
  3. If you're interested in non-cosmere short stories, you might also consider the following: - Firstborn, available on Tor.com - Defending Elysium, available on Brandon's website If you want a physical book, you can get both of the above combined into a single book combined with Firstborn from Brandon's website - Heuristic Algorithm and Reasoning Response Engine from the Armored anthology, edited by John Joseph Adams - Dreamer, from the Games Creatures Play anthology, edited by Charlaine Harris and Toni L.P. Kelner - Centrifugal, a story Brandon wrote in 1994 while in high school, found on Brandon's website - River of Souls, a deleted scene from A Memory of Light, from the Unfettered anthology, edited by Shawn Speakman - I Hate Dragons, a short story found on Brandon's website I've read all of these, and thoroughly enjoyed them, although the fact that I'm posting on his fan website indicate that I'm a wee bit biased. There's also the Infinity Blade novellas, which would probably make more sense if you've played the iOS games (the story sequence goes: Game 1 -> Book 1 -> Game 2 -> Book 2 -> Game 3), but I think would stand reasonably well on their own. Also, for further reference, the library page on his website is a good listing of the various projects he's been involved with, along with some behind the scenes stuff. The annotations are interesting to go through after you've read their respective books.
  4. When you come across this gif of a guy who can draw a perfect circle freehand and think he'd be amazing at Rithmatics. Also, when you're continually checking the bookstore's "in-stock" counter for Firefight because you can't get there until after work.
  5. When you see a random guy in the office cafeteria reading a Stormlight Archive-sized book and are tempted to go check what he's reading. UPDATE: Guys, I totally saw the same dude again at lunch today, and confirmed that he was in fact reading Words of Radiance. Went and said hi, turns out this is his first time through the book, and he discovered Brandon through his work on the Wheel of Time.
  6. Also worth noting: the Cosmere is in a much smaller galaxy than our own, according to WoB. This increases the odds of running into other inhabited solar systems, as there is simply less physical space to explore.
  7. Highlights from Christmas with my family, which includes another Sanderfan: - "Hey Jeremy" [throws a coin at me] "Do you want to have a Boxing match?" - "These playing pieces are made of zinc. Isn't that a Riot?" - "I get a strong feeling about this pewter ornament".
  8. Many thanks to everyone who helped put this together. Incredibly fascinating stuff. Highlights for me are the existence of harmonium and the ability to store Connection to a world to help with the magic. Always excited for fresh Cosmere stuff.
  9. Wow. I am impressed that you have so many of those memorized off the top of your head, and that you can come up with appropriate places to use them all. Very nicely done. If I could upvote multiple times, I would.
  10. You know you're a Sanderfan when your friend posts something about Mr. T on Facebook and your first thought has nothing to do with the A-Team.
  11. You know you're a Sanderfan when you recognize, understand, and occasionally use the term "badchull".
  12. These novels are currently unreleased, and in a relatively unpolished state. However, Brandon has been giving out digital copies (my copy of White Sand came in a Word doc) out to people who contact him via his website. From what I understand, the graphic novel of White Sand is the same story from the novel, but likely cleaned up/edited a bit (in addition to the obvious conversion to the new format). To the best of my knowledge, there is no current plan to publish a novel version of White Sand.
  13. I first came to Brandon's work through the Wheel of Time. I had started the series relatively late - Knife of Dreams (book 11) was out by the time I finished Crossroads of Twilight (book 10). When I finished reading KoD, I started regularly checking dragonmount.com for status updates on the next book. It wasn't until then that I realized that Mr. Jordan was struggling with health concerns, and I was even more impressed with him for continuing to struggle through disease while still putting together one of the greatest stories I had ever read. When he passed away, the homepage of Dragonmount was converted to a stark black page announcing the sad fact. I felt some measure of sympathy for his family, but on a more selfish level, I was saddened to realize that the epic tale that I'd become invested in might never be completed. I continued to check Dragonmount regularly in the following months, hoping that somehow the story would be finished, that they would pick someone to write the rest of it. Fortunately, for me and the rest of the WoT fandom, they did. When it was announced that Brandon had been selected by Harriet to pick up where Jordan left off, I felt a sense of relief, but also some measure of apprehension - how could I know that this guy, who I'd never heard of before, would do a good job? When I got home from university that day, around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, I checked out Brandon's website, where I was pleasantly surprised to discover that he had posted an entire novel (Warbreaker) for free. I sat down at the computer and began to read. By the time I looked up, bleary-eyed, from my computer at the end of Warbreaker around 2 or 3 in the morning, I was convinced that the Wheel of Time was in good hands. Since then, he has obviously finished the Wheel of Time, and I have to say that it was a satisfying conclusion. I've also had the pleasure of jumping into his solo work. I've read everything in the Cosmere multiple times, and most of his other work as well. It's unfortunate that it took the tragedy of Robert Jordan's death to bring Brandon to my attention, but I am thrilled to have discovered such an absolutely brilliant author. Getting to meet him in person this summer provided an even greater privilege - discovering firsthand that in addition to being a terrific writer, Brandon is also a genuinely nice and good and decent human being. I love how involved he is with his fanbase, how freely he gives of his time at conventions, and how much of the process he allows us to see and be involved with. I intend to be reading his work for as long as he continues writing.
  14. I just joined as well. I mostly play single-player games, but I will definitely be looking for people to play the co-op missions with on Assassin's Creed Unity. I may or may not be a little bit obsessive about that series (100% completion of the single-player campaign for all the AC games that are currently available on PC)
  15. If the Cosmere was turned into a series of movies by Disney/Marvel, Hoid would have an eye-patch. And would inexplicably be black.
  16. Hello there! Welcome! If you've read the Mistborn trilogy, you might want to try Alloy of Law - set on the same planet, but several hundred years in the future, with some of the characters from the trilogy appearing as legends or other references. Also Allomantic gunfights. Good times. Other suggestions: the Stormlight Archive series (book one, Way of Kings, and book two, Words of Radiance are out now). You could also try Warbreaker, which is available for free on his website. Honestly, there hasn't been anything of Brandon's that I've read and not enjoyed, so you could try pretty much anything.
  17. I definitely agree that this sounds like the Surgebinding chart. I did a double-take when I first read that part. I personally doubt that the Heralds are around the border of the doors, not because it's implausible in and of itself, but because it was Shallan describing the door, and I feel like she would have noticed the Heralds and commented on them. The lack of any such commentary suggests that they aren't there, at least to me.
  18. - When you've purchased entire anthologies (Armored, Games Creatures Play, Dangerous Women, Unfettered, Altered Perceptions) simply because Brandon has written a story in them. - When your first thought on getting an iPhone is "Now I can buy Infinity Blade, so I'll be able to read Infinity Blade: Awakening and actually know what's going on" (aside - that game is actually incredibly fun, and I would recommend it to anyone who has any interest at all in swordfighting games) - When you picked up the Mistborn Adventure Game, even though the only people you know who are big enough Sanderfans to play with you live in another province, because at least there will be new Cosmere worldbuilding info.
  19. As someone who would prefer not to see the entire Cosmere consumed and overtaken by a Shard of hatred, all I have to say is: Kill it with fire! (it's super effective)
  20. - When you are pleasantly surprised to find that 17th Shard is no longer filtered as "Games" at work and you proceed to read this entire thread - When you understand all of the jokes in this thread - When you've driven a total of 18 hours to see Brandon at a conference - When you've ended said conference with 18 books signed - When you recognize a fellow fan at the conference by their 17th Shard user name
  21. Hi folks, I am one of those other Sharders that Khyrindor was talking about. I mostly hang out on Tor.com, but I lurk here every now and then. I had some questions of my own that got asked/answered, as well as some questions that the Tor.com folks sent me with. Here is what I got (note that, like Khyrindor, there was no audio recording so this isn't necessarily exact wording). [My comments/thoughts on Brandon’s responses in square brackets] My own personal questions: Q: What is the home planet of the Ones Above (from Sixth of the Dusk)? A: They are from a planet you have seen before. [implies that this could be Scadrial, as we have prior WoB that the Scadrians will eventually get FTL. However, it was also mentioned as a response to a different question I overheard, that they won’t be the only ones to get FTL, so that isn’t confirmation.] Q: How much can you explain about Dalinar’s armour and how he was able to “mentally unlatch his gauntlet”? A: This is definitely something a regular person couldn’t do with regular armour. You can see in his visions hints of how the armour used to work. This is similar to Shardblades, and more will be revealed later. [This would certainly support the idea of minor spren becoming the Shardplate, but as mentioned, this wording is not exact, so it could just mean that it’s exciting/cool and will be better to read about when it happens live in-world than it would to just be given the information.] Q: What are the pre-requisites for someone becoming Returned? Does it depend on how much Breath they have? A: It does not depend on the quantity of breath, but I’m not revealing the specific pre-requisites, since I need to save something for Nightblood. [aka Warbreaker 2. This was the question that got me my RAFO card.] Q: What’s going on with the Mistborn movie, and how can I get involved? A: One of the conditions I set for the movie is that there has to be an open casting call. [Meaning anyone can audition for roles in the movie]. The film branch of Little Orbit [the company producing the Mistborn: Birthright video game] has purchased the rights. If they complete the game within 18 months, they can renew their rights and keep working on producing the movie; otherwise, the rights will go up for sale to someone else. Tor.com questions: Q: Is the order of the Ideals fixed? E.g. does Kaladin have to say the Windrunner Ideals in a specific order, or are they situation-specific? A: Yes, the sequence is fixed. The oaths for each order are essentially a progression of understanding of the kind of person that each Order of Knights Radiant is trying to produce. The specific wording of each Ideal is not fixed, but the overall idea of each Ideal, and the order in which they are spoken, is. Q: Does Wit specifically treat people differently when he knows they’re (going to) have a spren bond? (E.g. Renarin, Dalinar) A: Yes, Wit treats people differently, but it is not because of present or nascent spren bonds. He has an opinion of what each person needs to hear. He isn’t always correct in this opinion, but he tries to give people what he thinks they need. In Dalinar’s case, he simply has too much respect for the man to be glib. In Renarin’s case, he believes that the boy has had more than enough breaking down, and is much more in need of building up. Q: When Honor speaks of his inability to see the future, he likens it to a shattering window. Is this related to the fact that in the not-too-distant future, he himself will be splintered? Or is it more a matter of Intent; e.g., Cultivation (and Preservation?) is geared toward future development, whereas Honor is geared toward current behavior. A: This is not related to his impending splintering, it is a matter of differing Intents. Q: There are hints in WoR that the thrill is tied to an individual entity that Taravangian has studied, possibly one of the Unmade. Does this have anything to do with the hints of why the KR turned away? Were the Unmade some of those who did whatever-it-was that tore them apart? A: [This is the one where he stopped me partway through asking, probably due to the wording]. Does it have anything to do with it? Yes. Is it the root cause or the primary reason? I’m not going to reveal that right now. Q: Syl gives Kaladin the choice to have any number of weapons or a shield. Pattern can be equally a sword or a small knife. Are spren limited to being items of war or could they be put to other uses? Could the surge binders less geared toward battle use their spren to make ladders, rope, etc? A: No, this is not restricted to articles of war. [so Shardrope could totally be a thing.] Q: We know that Mistborns needed to Snap, and Surgebinders needed have the cracks in their souls filled. But what about the people in Warbreaker or Elantris? Is cracking and snapping only required on certain worlds? A: This is universal to the Cosmere; however, in certain magic systems / on certain worlds, this is easier than others. ETA: Hi Khyrindor! It was nice to actually meet another Sharder/Sanderfan in person!
  22. Just some quick questions: Is shipping $5.95 per bookmark or per order? If we are planning to order more than one, would it be okay to just use the Phrase section for added details, or would you prefer that we submit a separate order for each bookmark?
  23. Sounds good. If space becomes an issue, having just the first ideal itself would be just as good, i.e. "Life before death. Strength before weakness." on one side, with "Journey before destination." on the opposite side.
  24. I would be interested in buying some. Ideally, I would like "Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination." on one side, and "First Ideal" on the other side. I'm thinking that a set of ten would be awesome, one for each color/surge/gemstone.
