    Oh, you want to know about schools being idiots? I've worked for one. Shall I tell you about.... The way they budget for colored paper to print flyers no one ever reads, rather than utilizing the free email no one ignores? The way they have unnecessary staff luncheons catered by not-exactly-cheap restaurants, while kids on free and reduced-cost lunch programs never get enough to eat? The way tenure is set up so horrible teachers are almost impossible to fire, while good teachers find it impossible to get jobs? The way they say they welcome new ideas, yet shame and scorn anyone who challenges an outdated status quo? The way they lay off most of their support staff due to "budget cuts," then a month later unveil their plans to renovate the front lobby and football field?

The consequences of your judgement being compromised as it was today could be disastrous. I hope you understand." Autumn nodded slowly. Her heart sank, and she kicked herself for it, because Vondra was right. Having the final say over who stayed and who left meant a repeat of Shiny Sparkle could spell disaster for the city. Shiny Sparkle.​ Her cheeks flamed. If she'd just hesitated a moment longer….her head might've exploded, but it might still be intact. She should have waited to see. And now he wanted to stick her with a bodyguard. Good. Who was an Epic. Not so good. Had it not been for the recent incident, Autumn knew Deathwish would have been Vondra's first choice. His strange damage reflection and love of confrontation made him an ideal bodyguard. His penchant for laughing at things like two girls kissing one another, rather than stepping in and stopping it, did not. Autumn ran through those others she knew. Arsenal and Redlight were out, and Glamour's attachment to his headphones rendered him unable to hear important things at strategic moments. She nearly suggested Edgerunner or Scribbler, but knew Vondra would frown on both their lack of offensive powers and their fondness for pranks. Her stomach twisted. It looked like Deathwish would be her bodyguard after all, provided he had a plausible explanation for the armory incident…. Something triggered in her memory. A prison. A single prisoner, drenched in water and stripped rather than executed. The only Epic it seemed Vondra wanted to trust, even if he couldn't. ​"What about Vapor Snake?" she asked. "I know he lost control, but he's always gained it back before. How about I interview him in the morning, and if it goes well, would you offer him the job? He has both offensive and defensive powers that he could train me to use, and he's the only Epic in the city who asked you to use his weakness on him if he lost control." Plus, she almost added, I know him. If you give him a second chance, I know this is the chance he'd want. And I really, really, really ​don't want to spend all that time with Deathwish. I really don't.

    So with Autumn, how should she bring up the suggestion for Vapor? Go through a mental list of all available Epics, guess what Vondra's reaction would be to each one, and land on Vapor, presenting a few reasons for her decision and offering an alternate in case he's still too unstable?

    I don't think we have much to worry about. You and others joined because of the story and characters (or just the insanity ) so I'm sure there are others who will do the same.

    Thought so. And then we can get to the ship teasing introduce Vapor Snake already. I wonder, though—if he's going to be Autumn's bodyguard, will they get his old squad back together, or sort of put that on the back burner? We're good at loophole abuse here. Besides, if authors didn't want fanfic writers to abuse their loopholes, they'd just tell their fans everything they want to know about their favorite series in the first place.

    Speaking of, what all more is needed to finish up the day in The Dalles? Yay cheating! Another reason the electricity situation in The Dalles hasn't come up yet is because it's been daytime since that thread started. Now that the sun is setting, I'd assume civilians are encouraged to use candlelight wherever possible, reserving fuel for those who really need electricity, like Doctor Game.
