  1. So slamming a spike through someone's chest who is in critical condition and then rushing to jam pewter in their mouth and make them swallow is better? lol. edit: also to add, once you realize something is a metalmind you can instinctively tap it (Marasi was a misting. never had a feruchemical ability in her life, yet knew how to tap and store in a medallion). This is an assumption, but if everyone knows what medallions are, then potentially even unconscious, a unkeyed metal mind would be treated as a metal mind and tapped. As per WoB spiking is horribly traumatic, and can have lasting effects, regardless if it is healed. edit 2: to save me the trouble of having to find this again later I am just going to post the whole host of them in a spoiler below
  2. Yeah edited my last post because I had looked it up. And they said they didn't want to encourage killing of superiors to advance. Didn't say necessarily she would have been killed for it. Pretty much you answered your own question. They positioned Shalash and Taln to be together when Dalinar united the realms. Who knows what else they were doing behind the scenes. And are you so sure that Mraize wouldn't have a means to then balance things back in the other direction had Dalinar become Odium's champion? Oathbringer page 232 "Your task" Mraize said "is to secure this location. Urithiru must remain strong if we are to properly use the advent of the Voidbringers" "Use them?" "Yes" Mraize said "This is a power we will control, but we must not let either side gain dominance yet" So the ghostbloods want to control the power of the voidbringers. They want the sides to remain fighting without any clear winner till they gain said control. Jasnah and team Kholin obviously want the conflict to end. If Jasnah and Co. show to be winning the conflict too quickly for Mraize's comfort, then they will take actions to "balance the scales".
  3. They are using information on Helaran and Amaram to keep Shallan furthering their goals, while portraying Jasnah as the aggressor in their conflict. If it came down to having to choose, I doubt the Ghostbloods would be supportive of Shallan siding with Jasnah against them. It is like getting someone addicted to a drug. The first sample is for free. The second is a bit stronger, but don't worry I got you. Oh you want more? Well I will give you a special discount since we are so close......and etc. Never said Jasnah did it unknowingly. I was positing a scenario that I feel is plausible as to why they would run into each other. Jasnah is researching the desolations, what caused them, and how to stop them from happening again in Way of Kings. Ghostbloods conversely are either actively helping it come to be, or passively allowing it to happen by keeping those who are actively pursuing it able to do so. It would be easy to me for those two goals to come into conflict. Just about every action movie works on a similar premise. Two parties are looking into an ancient artifact for different reasons. Their competition to attain it leads to investigation into each other. Goals are discovered, and conflict heightens. So again, like every other action movie. Some cult, or group, or secret society is working behind the scenes to help bring about the end of the world. So go "ah well, lets leave them be till they try to kill me"? I forget, was Tyn considered a member of the Ghostbloods? or just a contractor? (nevermind, just looked it up. contractor) Jasnah is trying to stop the Desolation currently happening. She wants team Dalinar to win. If team Dalinar gets too powerful/looks like they are going to win, the Ghostbloods (as per their own admittance) will act in a way to balance the scales to prolong the war. That sounds like Jasnah and the Ghostbloods are most definitely not aligned with the same goals.
  4. I am of the personal opinion that there is no way for there to be "ethical" hemalurgy, based on WoB. Others feel differently and have very valid reasons to belief as such. As to spiking with allomantic pewter, to me if medallions are a thing and you want them to last before a gold medallion can arrive, why not have a pewter medallion? it would accomplish the same thing as a spike and be less invasive.
  5. It looks like what is stored is "investiture". At least that is how: So that is the assumption i am operating on. Whether or not that is 100 percent accurate I have no idea. I could see cadmium mechanisms providing air for space suits, space ships, or even simple scuba gear. I don't think you would need it for a pneumatic system when you could accomplish the same with a steel push/iron pull mechanism. Hmmm, will try and think of more.
  6. I am confused by this part. You were saying that Shallan might be able to convince the Ghostbloods to stop trying to kill Jasnah. I was saying it looks more to me that Mraize is trying to get Shallan on their side to turn her against Jasnah. Now as to Jasnah killing their members, Jasnah was trying to prevent the oncoming desolation to keep her family and humanity safe. The Ghostbloods wanted it to happen and prolong it so as to take advantage. I could easily see them coming into conflict in the span of Jasnah's research and in her effort to stop the desolation, her and the ghostbloods come to blows. Her survival would indicate their members defeat. I would imagine considering what we have seen from the ghostbloods they would fight to the death.
  7. Theoretically I don't think you would need to pull air from outside at all. Just have the mechanism store heat in the summer cooling the room, then tap the heat in winter to keep the room warm.
  8. I would need to check the order, but if Mraize saying "You don't know what we're trying to accomplish" was just when they reached Urithiru, then Mraize answered what later in Oathbringer. He states they want to keep all sides from gaining the upper hand so they can draw out the battle, and gain the most from it. Jasnah trying to prevent the desolation would put them at cross purposes. I think Jasnah would still be on their hit list. She certainly considers herself still on it. She took time hidden to recover so as not to be vulnerable to attack before arriving at Urithiru. She picks her rooms based on how defensible they are. She always positions herself to be able to watch the exits and entrances to a room. As to Shallan, it looks like they are more trying to turn her against Jasnah, than the other way around.
  9. So going back to your original premise, since using an intelligence network is not plausible to you, let us break down your theory. If I understand correctly you posit that Jasnah does the "astral projection" version of elsecalling. She then zips around as that astral projection to locate the heralds. Below is a list of problems with this: 1. "Astral projection" elsecalling leaves your physical body vulnerable to attack 2. "Astral projection" elsecalling leaves your cognitive self vulnerable to attack (confirmed via Jasnah in book) 3. Your response to one of the arguments was: "Your saying that Ivory wants Jasnah to go into Shadesmar and talk to people about sending ships into a continent sized ocean in the hope of finding 10 people among the several millions that are there" How is Jasnah zipping around as an astral projection by herself not facing that same problem? 4. it isn't astral projection as in you are ethereal and can just fly around without risk. In this "continent sized ocean" you refer to, unless Jasnah has a boat, she will need constant stormlight to form a raft from the beads. In order to zip around as you posit, she would need massive amounts of stormlight, when they are already low on stormlight resources at Urithiru. Otherwise Jasnah will sink amongst the gemstone waters and die, leaving her body brain dead (also confirmed via WoB, as well as Shallan multiple times throughout the books) 5. if you are positing that through "astral projection" elsecalling, jasnah can just decide to "project" herself to lets say azir, when she is in alethkar, even if that was possible (which I do not believe is the case, but lets give it the benefit of the doubt), you still run into the same problem mentioned in number 3. How is she to know where to pop up to look in that "continent sized ocean" without any information to coordinate? Why pick there instead of anywhere else? So for those 5 reasons, I do not think your theory is plausible nor possible. But all we can do at this stage is RAFO
  10. 1. Totally respect you do not enjoy her outward self. Totally entitled to your opinion. But for informational purposes it is a defensive mechanism. When she nearly died from soulcasting for the first time, she kept reciting in her brain to be calm and be rational. When she lost her father and was torn apart inside, she was fighting through her emotions to try and make sense of it all. It is how she copes. I will also point out, just about every single time she is cold and coarse to someone, they deserve it. They instigated the response. Otherwise she is respectful and considerate. 2. I cannot recall if I covered this in my post, but Jasnah will not come to the forefront till the back five of stormlight. I see her becoming queen as a means to maintain and keep the peace of Alethkar while Dalinar handles the voidbringer war. To me for now she will be in the background till the back five. She is the furthest along radiant than all the others. When they catch up, let us speak again about the level of power. When we see the full force that Odium can bring to bear, that challenged even the heralds who as per WoB were confirmed to have once had access to amounts of investiture no radiant could attain (prior to Honor's death), let us speak again about her level of power. I see her return to the forefront to be when the stakes have rose significantly. So personally I do not think her level of power is a problem. 3. To each their own. I think the hype for me at least is multi layered. She is a strong independent woman who is fully capable which is a concept that for a very long time unfortunately was unseen in novels. So she provides a character women can look up to, and identify with. She is rational, educated, and very intelligent. When a good chunk of movies, television, and novels involve the physically strong man of action who solves problems by cutting his way with his martial prowess, those who are more cerebrally inclined have her to identify with and look up to. For those who are magic system geeks, for myself at least, she has one of the most interesting power systems of all the radiants. Add the incredibly clever, and innovative ways she employs said abilities, and all I want to see is more. She is an atheist in a world that sees such as an abomination yet she holds true to her convictions. She is an atheist that is portrayed in a respectful and thoughtful manner. That gives individuals who are atheists themselves someone to identify with and look up to. Finally I feel as evidenced from this post, despite the view few view points we get of Jasnah, she is an incredibly layered and well thought out character (to me). So again, you are totally entitled for her to just not work for you, but I do appreciate that you took the time to read the reasons why she does fit for myself and others.
  11. Little tidbit to add, Cultivation did give Dalinar a curse. She says it herself. Taking the memories away of the people killed at the Rift and giving Dalinar a chance to change was the boon, taking the memories of Evi away was the curse. refer to Oathbringer page 1079
  12. But she does have an idea where they are. Taln in the insane asylum till Amaram stole him away. Nale was spotted operating in Azir. Taravangian told Dalinar he was working with a Herald. Jasnah knew enough to hang out around the oathgate with the sketches of the heralds and spotted Shalash. Again, if it doesn't feel like enough to you, then to each their own, but as I said we were able to manage in the real world all this time, I do not see any difference on Roshar. also sorry to get overly technical, but roshar is an inland sea in the cognitive realm. not an ocean
  13. One of the times. How about his other escapes? Also the reason he was held was because a drawing of him was released and his girlfriend at the time reported him to the cops, giving his name. The cop then pulled him over based on the car description and his name from the tip.
  14. So serial killers have all remained uncaught throughout the ages prior to electrionic surveillance and facial recognition software? Well I guess Ted Bundy is still at large then.
  15. You mean like these? As shown below, you can see, or visit the nightwatcher but that doesn't necessarily mean it was the one that gave the boon. Dalinar saw the nightwatcher, but it was cultivation that did it. Questioner When will we find out what the Nightwatcher looks like? Brandon Sanderson Um… well, Dalinar, in the past, met the Nightwatcher. Dalinar's third book is getting flashback sequences to his past experiences. You can postulate that one of those important past experiences might be a visit to the Nightwatcher. darkanimereal1 (paraphrased) Did Taravangian go to see the Nightwatcher before or after Gavilar's assassination? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Um, oh man. I'm going to have to look at my timeline. I believe it's before, but I can't guarantee I'm right, because these things are all happening around the same time. darkanimereal1 (paraphrased) Because he says that Gavilar confided in him the night of. Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Ooooh, you're right. Nope, it's after. It is after. You can send that question to Peter so we can confirm it. There might be something I'm forgetting about Taravangian.
  16. Hoid didn't for Nale and Ishi. And a connection is anyone you can gain information from. And yet we were still able to track people globally before such things existed. At the end of the day it is not enough for you. That is fine. It is enough and plausible for me. To each their own.
  17. For the first two books we thought as per Dalinar that he went to the Nightwatcher. Turns out Cultivation took the matter into her own hands regarding Dalinar and he remembered incorrectly. So we do not definitively know it was the Nightwatcher Taravangian dealt with, even though he said he did. Could be a situation similar to Dalinar.
  18. In the real world there are ways to track people down all over the world, and yet they do not have the entire planet's population to use to search for said individual. Again, I already detailed how I could see it happening. Jasnah was already doing it. Through her connections she was able to attain a physical sketch of Nale from Azir, as well as a sketch of Taln, and even Shalash. As to the other heralds, they have confirmed that the god king is Ishi, so there is another physical description you can get. Using span reeds she had sketches of the heralds circulating through major cities with the help of her connections. That is using the physical realm alone. Same would stand for the cognitive realm. Coordinate the two and unless the heralds can mask their presence in the cognitive realm (as Jasnah reasoned), I think tracking people down on Roshar is quite plausible.
  19. There are enough spren for there to be multiple whole cities with shipping trade routes between them. The mist spren seem pretty sapient to me yet they are not radiant spren (confirmed via WoB). Roshar is a super continent, there are no other significant land masses on the other side of the planet (also confirmed via WoB) , so the heralds are theoretically limited to that landmass. I already stated how I feel a continent wide search on the physical realm, with the aid of the cognitive realm would be accomplished. If that doesn't suit you, then it doesn't suit you. I personally think that is plenty rational to account for it.
  20. Spren don't need to sleep. Ivory probably has contacts in the cognitive realm. Jasnah having traveled through the cognitive realm extensively already probably has plenty of contacts. I would imagine it would not be solely on them alone. edit: also to add coordination with the physical realm. At the end of Oathbringer jasnah was showing sketches of the heralds around when Shalash fainted and Jasnah identified her. So release sketches of the heralds. Follow tips from people who have seen individuals matching those descriptions. Contact spren and other individuals in the cognitive realm to help narrow locations down. Track quarry.
  21. Souls manifest as flames in the cognitive realm floating above the beads. So theoretically it would be easy to see them, and apparently touching them gives you an impression of what that soul is attached to (see Jasnah and Shallan in either the end of Way of Kings, or beginning of Words of Radiance). The issue that Jasnah mentioned though is that the heralds may have a way to mask that flame.
  22. You do not need spoilers regarding Oathbringer at this point. Only if you are talking about a book outside of stormlight. From what I recall of the description, it looks like windows shattered to almost like a stained glass window pattern. Each shard shows a possible future. I took the description to show the various scenes, not that Renarin is actually shattering/fracturing the future. But I see where you are getting your interpretation and I respect it. i don't agree with it, but I wish you luck with your theory!
  23. So I have begun working on my next thread which will focus on all the quotes associated with Amaram to get a clearer picture of the character. At the moment I was perusing some of them, when I came across one that I feel is pertinent to the discussion here so I thought I would share it prior to really digging into the work on my thread. Amaram was not ok with Taln as "insane". He sent the message to Restares first, then thought to himself how important it was to bring the Church back into power, because sure the Heralds must return with their dire straits (so he wasn't even sure starting the Desolation would accomplish their goal), and then he went to speak with Taln. He expresses regret for have not killed Kaladin when he had the chance. Taln then defends Amaram from the darts. After Taln goes back to his insane mode, Amaram feels a chill. That says to me right then Amaram began to realize not everything was "right". The great Herald they did so much to bring back, wasn't responding nor acting the way he should. Amaram even convinces himself the darkeyes must "be a disguise". The pertinent portions are quoted below. Words of Radiance page 1059 "I do not exult in this success, he wrote. Lives will be lost. it has ever been our burden as the Sons of Honor. To return the Heralds, to return the dominance of the Church, we had to put the world into a crisis. That crisis we now have, a terrible one. The Heralds will return. How can they not, with the problems we now face? But many will die. So very many. Nalan send that it is worth the loss." Words of Radiance page 1061 "Would that mercy had not stayed his hand, all those months ago, when he could have executed that spearman." "The Herald's dark eyes were, of course, some kind of disguise" Words of Radiance page 1061 "The he dropped both darts and sat back down on his bed. His strange, unchanging mantra started over again, muttered. Amaram felt a chill run down his spine, but when he returned to the Herald, he could not get the man to respond. With effort, he made the Herald rise again and ushered him to the coach.
  24. And Renarin hasn't been going around shattering anything
  25. And my point is if it works like I mentioned in the spoiler, then fiber doesn't matter. It is only the calories. That is why it would benefit the situation in the spoiler to eat a donut for a quick burst, vs bread that would give an ability over time. Fiber doesn't come into play with that. WoB spoilered below regarding the other spoiler:
