You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Gabriele replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
And all those Twilight fans will think it's a vampire. -
Well, compared to a quasi-immortal dragon shapeshifter who lives in a flying fortress from where he can send magic laser beams at his enemies, if he doesn't prefer to badassily fight and trap them in his magic sword for eternity, Kaladin seems pretty normal to me.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Gabriele replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
It gets worse. There are multi-fans with split personalitiles who live in the Cosmere, Middle Earth, Westeros, Osten Ard, and Seven Cities (or Letheras, Genabackis, Malaz City - take your pick and make sure you don't get stuck in a Warren) at the same time. -
Because it's [/ b] (without the empty space, of course). The parallels to Allomancy are interesting; I hadn't connected the snapping and broken-ness of both worlds with the Cosmere. Is there anything like that in Warbreaker, too ? (I admit, I put that one down after a few chapters since I couldn't relate to either of the girls, but I may have to pick it up again).

My book towers could support the roof of a cathedral. I'll soon need one to store the lot. -

When you return from a ten day holiday trip and the first thing you check after the email is this forum. (No, I don't have any of those something-phone thingies; I can stay off the world for a few days quite fine.) -

Lol, I totally ship Kaladin/Adolin. And if people absolutely want to give him a girlfriend, too, double fun. *insert devil smiley* I got some non-straight characters in my novels-in-progress as well. Never planned it, but it just happened when I wrote them that some characters turned out several shades of queer. Now I have the fun to make that fit in historical contexts.

When you read this and think, too bad my novel-in-progress A Land Unconquered is historical fiction because it would be fun to give Arminius a shardblade, and then remember that he kicked the Roman behinds even without one. -

Adolin's actions at the end of WoR (spoilers)
Gabriele replied to Dain's topic in Stormlight Archive
Lol, I don't think it will be that easy. Or I hope so. I've never been a fan of magical healing with no costs and problems. Self-healing by Stormlight is one thing since it has to be earned, but much as Kaladin would like to heal others that way, too, since he cares, it would make sickness and injuries less valid, and that would be unrealistic (as far as Fantasy worlds are realistic, lol). -

Adolin's actions at the end of WoR (spoilers)
Gabriele replied to Dain's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, I know some crazy people who would fight with a broken wrist. I've done so with a sprained ankle which isn't exactly more reasonable. I agree that Adolin would probably sorry for the disappointment he caused his father by losing it, but not for killing Sadeas as such (hey, that weasel had it coming three miles, and I cheered when I read the scene). He may also feel sorry for the political ramifications his act will likely cause and the trouble he'll put his father in though it might take a bit for him to see that. -

Sure, throwing Bran off the window wasn't nice, but he did it to protect his sister and their children. He's not the type to throw kids out of windows for fun like an Evil Overlord . He may also have thought Bran was sent there to spy on him; after all Jaime knows Kings Landing and its intrigues and probably something about Varys' little birds. And he hated that he had to do it. It's a little POV glitch here (I'm not sure Bran would notice the loathing) Martin built in - or it escaped him - to lay out little bits for the redemption arc. -

A redemption arc would be nice. I like those (yes, Jaime is my favourite character from ASOIAF). -
I know about titles. Kings and Rebels isn't the best one, either. I understand the instant feedback thing. I had a special blog for some time where I posted snippets from my NiPs, but in the end I changed and edited so much that those snips were not the same after a time. Yes, working without an outline and out of order has its setbacks, but it works for GRRM and that's my excuse. Actually, I've tried outlines but that approach doesn't work for me. And short stories. Well, it's a long time I got a short story plotbunny that did not cheat on me. These days when I let one of the fluffy cuties in, it will bring its family and breed three generations and withitn a week I'll end up with a trilogy. I really try to stick to the things I'm working on right now, that's more than enough for the next 15 years or so. Especially with my writing speed.

[Theory] It has been foreshadowed that Adolin will be a Radiant.
Gabriele replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
That sounds exactly like the sort of emotional problems authors love to put their characters in. Wouldn't it be nice if Adolin leads a Parshendi army against Dalinar and Kaladin and during the big final showdown Kaladin tells him, "don't let yourself be guided by hatred. I've been there, I understand you, but I it's wrong." And the Adolin realises what he has done, "stoms above, I've been so wrong;" says whatever ideal gets him to be a Radiant, and fights at Kaladin's side against a confused Eshonai. -

When you feel unmotivated and wonder if you could attract some motivationspren, then remember that you need to be motivated for them the appear and think that, sometimes, the spren system sucks a bit. -
Hey, you can't let us cliffhang under the bells of Kharbrand. I suppose when GRR Martin warned people off fanfic as start to a writing career, writing purely for fun didn't occur to him. He makes a living off it, after all, and he started with those original little tales he sold for a few cent to friends as kid, though he also has always been an avid fan of superhero stuff and such and wrote to the makers of these comics when he liked or didn't like something. I think he even got letters published in fan magazines. So he certainly understands fandom, but he also always had his head full of his own plotbunnies and proabably never thought about writing fanfiction. My first stories - written and sometimes just told to friends - would qualify as fanfic, but at some point I got my own ideas. I can't even say when it happened. Probably with some What If involving not a book- but a historical character. When I started writing more regularly, I wrote both fanfics and original fics side by side and eventually stopped with the fanfiction because I have only that much time and so many ideas... And the original ones do fulfill my creative urges better these days. Making up your own characters is a lot of fun, even with the limitations of a historical context. I think that if you (general you) as writer want to expand to original fiction, those plotbunnies or creationspren or whatever, will find you at some point and fanfiction won't hurt that. And if you don't get the urge to move beyond your favourite fandoms there's nothing wrong with that, either.

The Dividing Mind (Not Sanderson Related)
Gabriele replied to Metacognition's topic in Creator's Corner
Damnation is definitely a filter. I've had to go back and edit three posts because of it. I do use dam.n a lot, I admit, and so do my characters. There, tricked it. -
Well, I yell at my slow computer a lot. Does that make me a surgebinder? But seriously, I'm in the camp who thinks that talking to his sword thing is more than a quirk. Shardblades are too important in this world. It's a different level than eating a special dish.

Adolin's actions at the end of WoR (spoilers)
Gabriele replied to Dain's topic in Stormlight Archive
I don't think Kaladin will be too bothered about it. His hatred for Sadeas who callously killed so many bridgemen probably is stronger than his newfound ideals in this case. He'll be struggling to keep up those anyway in some situations, or it would be too easy. And writers don't make life easy for their characters. -

When someone says something stupid and you think, Airsick Lowlander. -
Lol, I know. I'm totally a pantster - yes, you can even write historical fiction without an outline - which means I do change a lot. In fact, the beginning of Forged at the Fighting was something I wrote for this post; until then Asic - the late father of my MCs - had never appeared in person. He finally told me how he died, and now the story has a prologue.
