  1. Well - the investiture is always consumed, whether you take an action or not. So if your action fails because you targeted someone on another world, the investiture is still gone. Note: you do not use investiture to power actions. You burn investiture to gain abilities (either passive ones or new actions) for the cycle. At the end of the cycle, regardless of any other factors, all the investiture you burned goes away.
  2. It takes 3 people attempting to steal from a Shard on the same night to release it from containment. Also, the timer is now edited into the main post.
  3. LG43: Night Zero - Containment Breaches Ninera ran through campus, breathing heavily, her oversized backpack jostling up and down her back as her gym bag bounced against her legs. She wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead, checked her watch, and swore. Nights, I’m late, she thought. Her dance coach had made practice run on for an extra half-hour again. Professor Sheran would understand, right? Finally, just as her legs felt like they were going to melt into jelly, she reached the entrance to the Shard Lab. She slammed her hand into the biometric scanner, panting. Nothing. She pressed her hand into the scanner again. Still nothing. “I don’t have storming time for this,” she muttered. She dropped her gym bag and backpack to the floor. As she took out her phone to call the office, she leaned against the door. It swung inwards. Ninera yelped and flung out her arm catch herself. Then she held the door open with her foot to collect her things. Once she got everything -- gym bag, backpack, and all -- she closed the door behind her. Cold white lights flooded the corridor. Ninera closed her eyes and took a deep breath, the first one she’d had since she’d left dance practice. She waited for the decontamination procedure to start, for the chamber to blast her with cold air, for the machinery to scan her for any significant sources of Investiture that might disrupt the experiments within, for the almost-but-not-quite-human voice to tell her that she was cleared. Nothing happened. Huh, that was weird. Ninera shrugged and passed through to the lab. Dog-tired, sleep-deprived, with a mountain of homework waiting for her afterwards, the sight of it still brought a smile to her face. Rows of computers lined the walls, with cords stretching from them to every part of the room. An assortment of barometers, geiger counters, mass spectrometers, and more lay on some tables that had been set aside. And there, on table 31b, lay Sheran’s experimental setup, the one that Ninera had been chosen to help with. It was an honor to be here, even as a lowly intern. How many undergrad students got to say that they were allowed into the Shardic Research Facility of Silverlight Polytechnic University? Only one, and that was Ninera Choi herself. She spotted a bit of broken glass left on the counters, and her eye twitched. That would be Kyle’s experiment with Survival, then. Storming grad students thought they could be as messy as they wanted because they had a new janitor now, huh? Ninera got a broom and dustpan to sweep the glass up. Nights afire, the glass was everywhere. It littered the floor in a three-meter radius, shining dully in the light. What had Kyle even broken to produce this much glass, several dozen windows? Ninera glanced at his experiment and froze. Survival’s containment cage was broken. Where there should have been an unbroken plane of specially-designed optically clear aluminum, plus a million other security measures, there was a large gaping hole instead. And Survival itself... Ninera prayed to the Iridescent Tones, hoping against all hope, and stuck her hand into the containment cage. Nothing. Survival was gone. Ninera’s hands flew to her phone to call Professor Sheran. When the university police came, she let them take her away, and answered their questions without complaint. By the time night fell, everybody on Silverlight knew it, broadcast in a flurry of texts, calls, and spanreed messages, in as many different languages as there were people. Survival was gone. Nobody knew where it was. Sitting in two opposite corners of the Cosmere, two very different individuals smiled the same smile, one of plans made, chances calculated, and opportunities seized. “Mission success,” said one. “Why, I thought I’d never get another chance!” said the other. -------------------- Welcome to LG43: Under the Banner of Adonalsium! General announcements: The Shard of Survival has been released from containment by malefactors unknown, and is currently believed to be at large. Please report any suspiciously large concentrations of uncontained Investiture to your team leader. Remember, all personal storage of uncontained Investiture is strictly prohibited, and violation of this policy will be grounds for immediate termination from the Silverlight Shardic Research Facility. In addition, the organizational goals of the 17th Shard have been streamlined and updated. Copies have been posted in all the break rooms in this facility. Please take the time to familiarize yourselves with the updated goals. Remember, at the 17th Shard, our goals are your goals! (The 17th Shard win condition has been slightly altered. The new conditions are in the Rules post, and are reproduced here for your convenience: 17th Shard - With the dangerous machinations of the madman who once led you taken care of, you are free to study the power of the shards however you like. And if you keep their power to yourselves, who could blame you? It’s not everyday you get offered a chance at Shardic power. You win the game if all members of the Standard of Harmony and Adonalsium’s Chosen are killed. Sudden Death Win Condition - If Hoid and Khrissala are killed and all 11 Shards are in containment, the 17th Shard wins the game.) Finally, we are pleased to announce that Arraenae has been hired as the Assistant Vice President of Archival Operations of the Silverlight Research Facility. You should all have been given her contact information, and you should feel free to address any concerns you have with her. She will be primarily responsible for maintaining the historical record of this facility, but she has jurisdiction over operational matters as well. If you have any matters that you believe ought to be included in the long-term historical archive of this facility, please bring it to her attention. (Arraenae has graciously offered to be the co-GM. She will be handling most of the writeups for the game. If you have any RP, death scenes, or just cool action sequences you might like to see in a writeup, let her know in the GM PM. No requesting game-related info in the writeups, please.) As a final note, please remember that private communication channels in this facility are not permitted. If you would like to open up a private communication channel, please contact your team lead for permission. (Remember - all PMs in the game are actions, and must be submitted to the GM. They will be created the following cycle, unless the action is roleblocked. Also, unless you have an action that permits you to create a PM, you cannot create a PM.) Thank you for your time, and we hope you have a productive day at the Silverlight Shardic Research Facility! The Night will end in: Player List: Young Bard - Jeral Arinian - Unnamed Character 1 Eternum - Habrian Fifth Scholar - Darrel randuir - Met Steeldancer - Steeldancer and Eobard Thawne Straw - Straw Jondesu - Quintus Droughtbringer - Ralar Devotary of Sponteneity - Reed livinglegend - Unnamed Character 3 Orlok - Locke Tekiel MonsterMetroid - Willie Magestar - Moro Hemalurgic_Headshot - Jiamo Megasif - Mega Sart - Sam Taswell TheYoungPyromancer - Kelsier _Stick_ - Stick shanerockes - Philepe De Pedro Von Leiderhuch Johnson III Drake Marshall - Everen Elbereth - Elaria
  4. Which is exactly why we're starting on night turns...
  5. Totally forgot to mention this bit - and I'm glad I remembered before start time. This game will start on a night turn. Happy converting! See you all in a few hours!
  6. Probably need to walk back that statement slightly. The "Vessel" protection is treated mechanically as an extra life, but it isn't actually an extra life. The Vessel's protection against attacks (not the lynch, and not Odium or Ruin) will stack with an extra life gained from another source. So basically, there are a number of ways to get access to extra lives (Survival's ability, Preservation's Investiture, the Shardworld ability for Scadrial, etc.). All of these extra lives are temporary and do not stack with each other. I missed one source of extra lives when I wrote that, so here's the real clarification. The following extra lives do not stack with themselves or each other: The extra life granted by burning Preservation's Investiture, the extra life gained by using the Shardworld ability for Scadrial, the extra life gained by Survival's ability, and the extra life gained by holding a Shattered Shard that does not have an investment ability. If you hold more than one Shattered Shards that grant extra lives, the extra lives do not stack, but if you survive an attack that consumes the extra life on one Shard, the extra lives on the other Shattered Shard or Shards still protect you The extra life gained by becoming a Dakhor Monk will stack with any other extra life the player has access to. Now, for worked examples. Example 1: Assume Wilson - currently on Scadrial - holds the Shattered Shard of Autonomy and is the Vessel of Preservation, and also has one charge of Preservation's investiture and one charge of Odium's investiture (acquired earlier in the game). If she is attacked by a Dakhor Monk she survives the attack - consuming the extra life gained from the Shattered Shard of Autonomy. She could have used the Shardworld ability for Scadrial to burn the charge of Odium's investiture to gain an extra life, or she could have burned Preservation's investiture for the same effect. However, since neither of those stack with the extra life gained from being a Shattered Shard, it would have had no effect. However, the next night, Wilson can either burn Preservation's investiture to gain another extra life, or burn Odium's investiture for Scadrial's ability to the same effect. Since she no longer has an extra life from the Shattered Shard of Autonomy, this extra life will now protect her. But using both abilities will still have no effect. If, on either night, Wilson is attacked twice (unless one of the attacks is by Odium or Ruin, which bypasses a Vessel's protection), she will still survive because the protection due to being a Vessel stacks with extra lives gained from other sources. Example 2: Assume Alvron holds the Shattered Shards of both Ambition and Odium. Since neither of the Shattered Shards can invest in other players, each of them gives the holder an extra life. If Alvron is attacked once during the Night, the extra life from one of his Shattered Shards (chosen at random) is consumed. The next night, he would still have an extra life, because the second Shattered Shard still offers an extra life. However, if Alvron is attacked twice during the Night, he dies, because the extra lives from Shattered Shards do not stack with each other. Example 3: Gamma Fiend has been invested in by the Shard of Dominion, and is thus a Dakhor Monk. He has 2 charges of Preservation's investiture, the Shattered Shard of Survival, and a charge of Cultivation's investiture, and is currently on Scadrial. He has an extra life from the Shattered Shard of Survival, and a second extra life from being a Dakhor Monk, and can thus survive 2 attacks against him during the Night Cycle. However, burning Preservation's Investiture or using Scadrial's Shardworld ability will have no additional effect, because they do not stack with the extra life from the Shattered Shard. If anybody is still confused, let me know, and I'll try to clarify further. All of the clarifications given so far will be put into the second post of this thread for reference after I get home from work tonight.
  7. This is true. If it's not in the rules, it needs to be. But either way, it will be announced at the start of the game. Silverlight will not have a doc. All conversation there is done under the watchful eye of the whole thread. Ooh - another really important clarification that I just read through and found out isn't in the rules. I'll bold it, so it stands out for people reading the thread. Extra lives do not stack with each other. You can only have one per cycle. None of the factions can win together, although some of the Shards can have cooperative victories with the factions. I'll get back to you on the sudden death vs. regular win condition bit - it slipped past me as part of a set of last-minute balance changes. I might edit it slightly before the game starts to be more in line with the other two factions.
  8. Poacher! But yeah - if you're worried about the time investment, feel free to join the other game.
  9. I remember you! We even played a few games together back in the day. If you think you'll have the time, we'd love to have you. If you don't think you'll have the time, feel free to sign up for the spec doc, where I'm sure there will be all manner of scintillating conversations.
  10. The following docs will exist: Adonalsium's Chosen, Standard of Harmony, Taldain, Braize, Roshar, Scadrial, Nalthis. Every cycle during which players worldhop to new worlds, a new doc will be created for the players on that world (if nobody on a given world worldhops away, the doc will remain, for my sanity's sake). For the two conversion factions, the doc will be treated as a normal Elim doc (yes, you can copy PMs). The rules governing Shardworld docs will be the same rules that govern PMs (no quoting other PMs you have, etc). Welcome!! Glad to have you! Looks like your question already got answered, but yes, Ruin can blow up Silverlight. Oops...
  11. Good questions: No, a Vessel does not have access to charges of investiture from the Shard they hold. While a Shard is out of containment, charges of investiture cannot be taken from it by any means except the Hemalurgist ability. The only other way to get new charges of investiture from a Shard that has been released from containment is to trade charges on Roshar. You can always burn charges of investiture you possess, even if you are a Vessel.
  12. If a Shard is passed to a new vessel, the timer is indeed reset. However, if you pass the Shard after you have changed alignments, your win con does not go back to the original one. Hoid and Khriss are immune to conversions. Their followers are not necessarily. If a player changes alignment as a result of overusing a Shard's power, they become immune to further alignment changes until they no longer hold the Shard that changed their alignment. If they hold 2 shards and would be overridden simultaneously, only one alignment change will happen. Which one goes through will be determined by how long they have held each Shard. If that does not suffice to distinguish, the Shard that changes the alignment will be chosen at random. If a player holds a Fused Shard and has their alignment changed, they will gain both win cons if they do not conflict with each other. If the win cons would conflict with each other, then their alignment does not change. You are correct about the difference between being invested by a Shard and having investiture from that Shard. There are no special effects for burning the investiture of a Shard that has invested in you. Shattered Shards are not immune to conversions like full Shards are. Both Hoid and Khriss's abilities put them on the list of potential recipients of a released Shard. I hope your schedule ends up working out for this! We'd love to have you.
  13. Since Hoid isn't a researcher, he can't steal investiture. His only option is his ability. It takes one action to merge 2 shards. If Hoid had 2 actions available, he could use the first action to fuse 2 Shards and a second action to fuse the newly created Shard with his 3rd shard.
  14. Yes. If a PM is created, it can be used by anybody involved in that PM for the remainder of the game. Should be noted - no player can create PMs on their own. Since PMs require an action to create, they can be roleblocked or redirected. To create a PM, you submit the action in your game PM with the GM. It will be created at the start of the next turn. If Cultivation is shattered, there is no longer any way to restore any shattered Shards Rollover will be roughly 1:30 AM Mountain Daylight Time. Autonomy's aspects do not count for Khriss's Win Condition. Hoid's ability is similar to the Researcher's ability. It's more focused on his win condition, though. Since he cannot steal investiture himself, it makes it so that he can guarantee that a Shard is released with a smaller team. If Ruin destroys Silverlight, contained Shards move to random Shardworlds. They remain in containment, and any player that can target a contained Shard with an ability can use that ability to target any Shard that is on the same Shardworld they are. (So, basically, any Silverlight only abilities become "anywhere with a contained Shard" abilities.) If all planets are destroyed? PAFO Yes, they are. I find them fun enough to not care too much about being perfectly realmatically correct. Shattered Shards cannot be fused or invested in a planet.
  15. Fixed - there are 6 worlds total, if you include Silverlight. And I ended up replacing Sel with Taldain. Too many worlds diluted the PM potential. However, only 5 of those worlds have a special action anyone can take (although Hoid, Khriss, and the Researchers all have to be on Silverlight to use their special action targeting contained Shards).

  17. LG43: Under the Banner of Adonalsium Actions and Turns: Each Cycle will consist of a Day Turn and a Night Turn. Day Turns will last roughly 48 hours, while Night Turns will last approximately 24 hours. Every player may use only one action during each Turn. In addition to any actions made available by Roles, Shards, or Shardworlds, each player may use their action during the Day turn to worldhop from one location to another, and may use an action during either Turn to pass one or more charges of investiture they possess to another player. Unless otherwise specified, actions can only affect players on the same world as you! Unless otherwise specified, actions can only affect living players! Death and the Cognitive Realm: When a player loses their last life, they pass to the Cognitive Realm - a doc for dead players to talk together. Their Roles and Faction are revealed, and they are no longer considered to be living players. However, they are still part of the game, and can be targeted by some abilities. Players in the Cognitive Realm cannot post in the thread or in PMs with other players, or take actions. However, they retain any investiture or roles they had in life. Shardworlds: There will be 6 worlds available: Silverlight, Roshar, Scadrial, Nalthis, Taldain, and Braize. Each world except for Silverlight will have it’s own Doc that players can use to communicate privately. Each player will start in Silverlight. In addition to private communications, each Shardworld other than Silverlight gives access to a special action or passive ability to the players that worldhop to it. Roshar - A player on Roshar may use an action during either Turn to exchange one charge of investiture for another charge of investiture from any Shard. Scadrial - A player on Scadrial may use an action during either Turn to exchange one charge of investiture for an extra life that lasts until the end of the Turn. Nalthis - A player on Nalthis may use an action during the Day Turn to exchange one charge of investiture to count their vote double. Taldain - A player on Taldain does not gain any special ability, but their actions may affect any player, regardless of the world they are on. Braize - A player on Braize may use an action during the Night Turn to exchange 2 charges of investiture to attack a player on any Shardworld. Factions: Adonalsium’s Chosen - After losing control of the 17th Shard, Hoid has fled to the farthest reaches of the Cognitive Realm to plot how to reforge Adonalsium under the very noses of the researchers he once led. You are one of his loyal followers, ready to steal the Shards and combine their power again. You win the game if your faction outnumbers all living players. Sudden Death Win Condition - If all 11 Shards are fused into a single Shard, Adonalsium’s Chosen win the game. Standard of Harmony - For a long while, Khrissala has hidden in the shadows, waiting for the opportunity to restore the state of the Cosmere to its former stability. Now, with Hoid out of the way, you stand with her as she acts to release the Shards again. You win the game if your faction outnumbers all living players. Sudden Death Win Condition - If all 10 shards other than Survival are invested in a Shardworld, the Standard of Harmony wins the game. 17th Shard - With the dangerous machinations of the madman who once led you taken care of, you are free to study the power of the shards however you like. And if you keep their power to yourselves, who could blame you? It’s not everyday you get offered a chance at Shardic power. You win the game if all members of the Standard of Harmony and Adonalsium’s Chosen are killed. Sudden Death Win Condition - If Hoid and Khrissala are killed and all 11 Shards are in containment, the 17th Shard wins the game. Standard Roles: Researcher - You are a worker in the vast Silverlight labs, studying the Shards and their power. With the recent unrest, you have found it prudent to siphon some of the Investiture off for your own protection. Surely that can’t have any side effects, right? While in Silverlight, each Night Turn, you may use your action to target a contained Shard and steal a charge of Investiture from it. In addition, if you hold a Shard of Adonalsium, you may use one actions during both the Day Turn and the Night Turn of a single Cycle to put the Shard back into containment. If you hold a shattered Shard of Adonalsium, you may use a single action on any Turn to put it into containment. Every player except for Hoid and Khrissala starts out with this Role. Hoid - You are the leader of Adonalsium’s Chosen, and a worldhopper of vast experience. You may carry any number of Investiture charges from any number of Shards and begin the game with one charge of investiture from each of them. As the leader of your faction, you are immune to alignment or win condition change, and may use your action during the Night Turn to target a player on the same world as you and convert them to your team. This conversion fails if you target a player who holds a Shard or if you target a member of the Standard of Harmony. You may convert up to X players over the course of the game. Alternatively, if you are in Silverlight, you may use your action during the Night Turn to target a Shard in containment. That Shard requires one fewer charges of stolen investiture to be released that Night. If you ever hold two Shards, you may use your action during either Turn to fuse the two Shards together into a new Shard. You may not take any attack actions. Also, any time a Shard attempts to invest in you, the investment fails as if they had tried to invest in another Shard. In addition, each time this happens, you steal a charge of investiture from that Shard. Khrissala - You are the leader of the Standard of Harmony, and a worldhopper of vast experience. You may carry any number of Investiture charges from any number of Shards. As the leader of your faction, you are immune to alignment or win condition change, and may use your action during the Night Turn to target a player on the same world as you and convert them to your team. This conversion fails if you target a player who holds a Shard or if you target a member of Adonalsium’s Chosen. You may convert up to X players over the course of the game. Alternatively, if you are in Silverlight, you may use your action during the Night Turn to target up to two Shards. You steal one charge of investiture from each Shard. If you are on any other world and you hold a Shard of Adonalsium, you may instead use an action during either Turn to invest that shard in the world. Shards of Adonalsium: List of Shards and Their Abilities: Cognitive Realm Roles: Returned: You return to the Physical Realm, losing any Roles or Investiture you had in your previous life. However, you may use your action during the Night Turn to do one of the following: roleblock a player on any world, protect a player from all attacks during a Cycle, or give another player two charges of investiture from any Shard or Shards. Using any of these actions will cause you to lose a life. If you lose all of your remaining lives again, you will be removed from the game and go straight to the Spiritual Realm (the spectator doc). Shade: You may burn any charges of investiture you still possess and use the actions gained to target living players on any Shardworld. You may not use any other actions. Signups are open now, and will last until: Quick links:
  18. Thanks! I appreciate the compliments! Gondor decks are just ridiculously fun! They are probably my favorite - mono-Lore Gondor Rangers, Tactics-Leadership Combat/Quest murder decks, even Spirit/Leadership is an amazingly fun combination...
  19. Finished up my narrative writeup of Passage Through Mirkwood. The Prologue is here, to catch up the curious.
  20. Reminds me of a setup I played once on another site. 3 vanilla eliminators and the rest of the players were 1 shot paranoid gun operators (kill any player who targets them the night they trigger). It was... chaos
  21. Rae, I have to hand it to you. That was not only excellent RP, but your mimicry of long-time SE players was spot-on. You had me convinced you were Wyrm in the dead doc...
  22. To be fair, my LG has been stated to be the shard game for months now...
  23. Signups for LG43 will indeed go up during the first week of March. Which, of course, means that I need to get it approved. And, therefore, to get it finished But it will definitely be a shard game. Which are wild and crazy and amazing.
  24. I certainly have thought about Goblin-Cleaver. It's a very good card, although in test runs, it just sat in hand too much. I think part of that was that I was testing the deck solo, and so willpower was a concern. If I were to drop all of the willpower and just stick to direct damage combat focus, I think it might be worth revisiting. The same thing happened for Fresh Tracks, too. I'll take a look at your deck idea and see what I can think up in the context of a modern card pool. Harbor Master is one that I haven't given much thought to recently. I saw your Outlands deck on Discord. That's an interesting one. It could benefit from recursion, but - as you say - it's out of sphere.
