I was tending to agree with you, and was looking up passages to support it, and then I ran into this: However, I'm still not convinced that it is because heat is being drained from the body. As I posted in the frost thread, I think it has to do with the compression of energy expanding from a smaller "pressurized" container. I also don't think it was exactly hypothermia that was causing his shock: The symptoms that he presents to us are classic shock symptoms. There's a few definitions for shock, the most basic being the inability to produce adequate energy at the cellular level, but most often it has to do with perfusion of the blood through the body. There are generally three causes to shock which happens as a result of inadequate blood circulation, and it has to do with how the cardiovascular system works (I'm going to try not to get too in depth here, bear with me.) Generally speaking, the cardiovascular system has three parts, the pump (heart), the liquid (blood), and the container (arteries and veins). Related to surgebinding, I think we can rule out inadequate liquid to fill the container, as there is the healing factor which would account for any blood loss. I also don't think that there's enough of an effect on the heart to cause it to fail immediately after surgebinding. That leaves the container, and this continues to go along with my theory. In some types of shock (distributive shock), the blood vessels in the body all dilate at once, causing two to three times the volume with no increase in fluid levels. The heart is unable to compensate for it, because no matter how much harder or faster it pumps, there's simply not enough blood left in the system for it to function correctly, causing a marked drop in blood pressure. This makes the most sense with Surgebinding. The Stormlight could act as a surrogate for blood, as they have no need to breathe, and the characters make several references to "a storm raging inside them." The blood vessels could all dilate at once to address the need to transport the Stormlight throughout the body. This accounts for the feeling of being "deflated" that surgebinders feel afterwards, because they really are. Their bodies respond to the increased abilities by opening up all possible channels for the energy to go through. Once the extra energy is gone, suddenly there's still the larger container, but not enough fluid left the run it, because it was the stormlight augmenting the blood stream which allowed the increase in container size. So basically, the stormlight enters the body in a pressurized state that expands the blood vessels, and leaving the body causes heat to be lost because of the expansion into the outside world. After leaving the body, the blood vessels are still expanded, and causes distributive shock symptoms, despite the fact that there's nothing wrong physically with Kaladin. (I hope this makes sense to everyone.)

The way I've rationalized it is similar to gas expanding from a container causing the same effect. Brandon describes the stormlight repeatedly as almost expanding the surgebinder, and afterward they feel deflated. So, with this, I've been assuming that its related to the expansion of energy leaving the body. The energy was compressed into a container-the surgebinder-and then was released-manipulating the surgest. The resulting expansion of the energy from the surgebinder into the surrounding environment would have a chilling effect on the area around where the energy was dissipating from, causing frost to form.

The Female ardent and more (rantings) (SPOILERS)
Fifth of Daybreak replied to metaldragon's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm just saying its odd. I'm assuming a lot of the warrior ardents were former soldiers who never got married. It seems like a perfect way to combat unemployment in former soldiers, they can continue in their calling and not have to worry about other things. Its not impossible that someone couldn't be taught weapons after joining, but it seems more likely that you'd have to enter with those skills. I do grant that Ivis could have joined the ardentia specifically to learn the sword, but it seems unlikely since it seems to be rather taboo in culture. Even though that ardentia is separated from that, culture still has a way of pressing down on someone born into it. Kaladin even notes it as being strange: I'm not implying they would know specifically what it meant or why, but just that its something she has to hide. Even the most level headed person looses control of their emotions, and just one slip could cause her trouble, because its different. Look at how the Rosharans treat Amians, it just wouldn't be smart to advertise it. The ardentia is a perfect cover because she has to be bald. (I wouldn't be surprised if that became part of the ardentia simply to slip her in there. ) I also have to assume that Ivis is the one that points Kaladin to Zahel during the weeping: She's then been linked with Zahel at least twice, and could even be watching over his rooms. She knows exactly where Zahel is at without having to be asked. My gut is pointing the direct other way. -
The Female ardent and more (rantings) (SPOILERS)
Fifth of Daybreak replied to metaldragon's topic in Stormlight Archive
Rushu? I don't think so either. The other female ardent is a different story though. Considering the whole masculine/feminine arts custom, it's very odd to see a female ardent working in the training grounds-Ivis. She's had quite a bit of time to learn from Zahel, giving her the qualifications to teach lighteyes in the training grounds. Also, being an ardent is a perfect cover. She has to be bald which hides her royal heritage that's evident in her hair. -
Make sure you get your vote entered in the actual poll as well. I noticed you haven't yet, and tge trolloss is behind. If you're using a mobile device you may have to go to the full site to do it.This is turning out to be quite close. We finally created an even battle it seems.

It's a young Trolloss at this point. I don't want to reveal too much of what I've got planned, but he will come back for another match later on. This idea that he hasn't grown fits snugly into that concept. That way later on, he'll be much bigger and badder, and we can pit him against something huge.

I'm alright with those weapons, all sharp, and duel wielding trolloss. I too, am a fan of awesomeness. As for intelligence, the Olog-Hai are supposed to be very intelligent. I think a lot of the madness might be negated in this situation. Along with the hemalurgic changes, IMO it was the melding of five different minds that truly created the madness. The troll is already a pretty similar beast, and has been bred to have that sort of mindset similar to a Koloss, but with the intelligence added. On the other hand, we're adding a huge amount of different minds to the thing. Would that work similarly to compounding the humanity in the spikes as happens with the later trolloss, or would it drive the thing even more insane? I know it would also depend on the placement of the spikes, but I don't think we can account for that unless Brandon or Peter decide to get in on the debate. Also, I think we've sufficiently debated and defined the battle to open the poll! Start your voting!

There will be a chasmfiend battle, proabably mulitple ones, so don't fret! We'll come to that debate. I'm ok with that size...for now *Snickers mischievously* So a 17 foot tall trolloss without armor against 150 skeletals, 3 troll skeletals, two full sized koloss skeletals. Any objections?

The Most Interesting Man in the Cosmere
Fifth of Daybreak replied to Lurthemir's topic in Introduce Yourself!
I have no idea why, but this killed me. -
Knowing the plot details is nowhere close to reading those books! The amount of character growth that occurs, their reactions to the story, the narrative! Vin is my all time favorite character. Her story arch is such an incredible journey of growth, and her character is so believable. To quote "The Way of Kings" Journey before Destination Although I understand the money requirement. I guiltily bought the a few of his books when their was no room in the budget for them while going through school. By all means I'm not trying to browbeat you for being frugal, but it is such a wonderful read. My favorite trilogy I've ever read.

Trolls start at about 9 feet, wheres humans can be as short as 4 foot six inches, which makes a small troll already twice as tall as a human. Koloss can grow up to 13 feet, which is twice as tall as uncommonly tall people. (I'm 6 ft one myself, and taller than a great portion of the people I meet.) The troll in the narrative was as tall as the large Koloss, making the beast 13 feet to start with, well over twice that of a normal human. Combine with the excess of skin and spikes laying around, there's a lot of room for growth. At 13 feet, the trolloss is going to have baggy skin, with the potential for growth. If we apply the same sort of physiology, then this thing is going to grow to at least 26 feet. But adding in the alarming amount of spikes, and the already magical nature of the troll, considering it was bred by Sauron, much in the same way a Koloss was crafted by the Lord Ruler, from older trolls. Given all of this, I'm inclined to say that this thing could grow upwards of maybe 35 to 40 feet, which is almost as tall as a chasmfiend. Their hearts are already sustaining a much larger body size and mass than that of a human, so if magically infused, I'd say it would have much greater propensity to sustain growth than a Koloss would. Heartier stock to begin with.

Great job! That looks awesome! I wonder what a Vorin dress built for a mistborn would look like? Lots of room in the safehand sleeve for spare metals.

Welcome! Have you read the rest of the cosmere novels? I'd definitely try to read them as quickly as possible if you are going to poke around the forums. The core of Brandon's books are all connected, so I'd definitely recommend reading Elantris and Warbreaker, along with the novellas. Plus they are all just swell reads on their own. Also, just to clariy: You did read the whole trilogy right?

Paranoia spren. Once you're bad enough to attract them, they only make things worse.

The Most Interesting Man in the Cosmere
Fifth of Daybreak replied to Lurthemir's topic in Introduce Yourself!
He soulcasts fire into sticks. -
Bahaahaha. Welcome. Happy first post! So a Roman walks into a bar. He walks up to the bartender and says "I'd like a martinus." The bartender looks back at him and says "Do you mean a martini?" The Roman shoots the bartender a dirty glance and replies "If I wanted more than one I'd ask for it!"

As awesome as Vin Diesel is, I don't know if he can outdo Kate Reading. I thought I laughed hard when reading it, hearing her perform the section was even funnier.

After my hopes and dreams were crushed in Harry Potter, I'm not shipping any characters ever again. If I don't hope characters will get together, I can't be disappointed when they don't. (Although I think Brandon would make it more satisfying and believable, and not lead me to believe that my favorite character will spend her life in an unhappy marriage.) Edit: My upvote got sniped! I'm not trying to restart the Hermione ship war I swear!

You bring up a good point that I was going to suggest, but the 48 hour shift I was on didn't even allow me time for the latest GoT episode! There's been a lot of consternation about the skeletals just being too wimpy, so I was thinking maybe we throw in a few koloss and troll skeletald for good measure. Maybe 150 skeletons, 3 troll skeletals, 2 koloss skeletals, and then Roshone and the Warg? I personally feel like that's enough to give the Trolloss a run for its money. Ccstat, I had never made that connection before, between blood and hemalurgy, that's fascinating. I had wondered why Brandon had added that snipped about Zane, anf I had assumed it was just to highlight his mental instability. Any chance you know of a thread where I can read more on that?

Where is the Final Shardhunt Item?
Fifth of Daybreak replied to GreyPilgrim's topic in Events and Signings
Is there any way to check if your code has been entered. I tried to enter mine multiple times and always got an error code, so I had assumed it worked the first time and had just acted funky.- 64 replies

Do we specifically know Odium splintered Honor? I know Tanavast says that Odium killed him, but we know from previous shard deaths that it doesn't mean they sre splintered. From the visions, I had assumed that Tanavast had splintered himself already, which allowed Odium to kill him. (Cue your WoB superpower to correct my false assumptions )
-
I like this a lot. We know Odium splinters shards instead of taking them, in order to preserve his intent, so forcibly changing his intent might work. Although I'm not sure it would be from the Stormfather and the Nightwatcher. Odium was able to splinter two shards, and we don't know how much of their powers were splintered into the Godspren. Along this thoery it seems more likely to me that Cultivation and whatever is driving Honor would have to splinter themselves and force those pieces onto Odium.
