  3. Those seem to be a little steep odds in my opinion. I feel like the Dakhor Monks will at least match them in defense if not more so with the magic bone armor, but they'll also dominate in strength. Should we say that the Awakened will have the same dexterity and strength regardless of the metal?

  14. Monster Melee is back! This time, I wanted to have a little fun do some ego pandering. So, for this monster melee, we're going to be using a creature not yet seen in the cosmere. Our own cosmere version of Frankenstein's monster! So, for the battle, we're going to have to decide what the creature is made of, what kind of realistic skill set we want to give it, while still making it a skilled warrior, and how many Dakhor monks we want to throw at the thing. As usual, once most of the basics have been set in stone, I will open up the poll for voting! Here's the Coppermind entry on the monks:http://coppermind.net/wiki/Dakhor I'd say we wait to decide on how many monks we use until we figure out just what our creation can do. As for limitations, I had joked in my thread about making him out of Vibranium, but let's try to keep it to in-cosmere materials. (Maybe one day we'll do a thread where he's made of Cortosis and sick him on a jedi!) A couple of ideas as far as that goes: Diamond might not be a bad choice, depending on how advanced in metallurgy we want to go. I personally wouldn't mind a more modern metal, but I'll let the group decide on that. For reference, platinum and titanium were both discovered in the 1700s, though platinum wasn't utilized until the very early 1800s, and titanium wasn't able to be used until 1910, 120 years after it's first discovery (Support Monster Melee folks, it's entertaining and educational!) We also could experiment with giving him some sort of reduced investiture power, though I don't want to get too crazy. Maybe a misting of some sort, throw out the ideas and we'll either find one that fits, or decide he's special enough as is. One thing to keep in mind is that we can always throw more monks at him to even things out As a slight refresher, Roshone has just suffered defeat at the hands of the Thunderclast, who fell down the cliff and disintegrated for dramatic effect, and because I wanted closure with the monster. (There's two midnight essence still unaccounted for.) He then turned his attentions towards the small country with the big personality, Herdaz, where our battle will be set. Thanks for the patience on this one, last month was crazy busy. Three different weddings, a weeklong holiday to NYC and Niagara falls, Ontario, and of course the 24 hour shifts beating me up. (I'm not actually British, I just think 'holiday' sounds so much better than 'vacation.') With the release of Sixth of Dusk, I might be inclined to do a few more of these than I said in my lost post, but I'd really like to see more participation before that happens. And, on the subject of garnering more interest, I thought I'd share my little plan for The Ballad of Roshone's Revenge. When it does finally finish up, I am interested in getting it printed out nice in a book, and possibly getting some cover art if anyone is up to the task (I'm not that great of an artist, passable, but not great.) Then, I'd like to be able to ship that book out to anyone who has participated in the threads and would be interested in signing it. I might have done the writing on the narratives, but every single person that has posted on these threads contributed in just as big a way. Without your help, I would not be nearly as pleased with the results of these threads. But once we've gotten it signed by everyone who wants to, I want to give it to Brandon as a gift. An official fanfiction of the 17thshard. It might get a little expensive to ship depending on where everyone is located, and I'm willing to help as much as I can, but if there's a bunch of international shipping involved, we'll have to figure out some way of working it out. Anyways, hope you guys are having as much fun with this as I have. Let the discussions begin!
  15. I think so too, not to try and shame whoever did the downvoting. A good portion of what we are trying to communicate is lost, because on the forums there is not body language, no intonation, no inflection, and no facial expression. Some things things are either interpreted incorrectly or aren't quite explained properly through text without body language to back it up. I think we've got enough people on the forums that balance things out that no one really loses out through the downvotes though. He definitely is a tedious read, but it strikes me more as a good thing, because it lends him to be a more realistic well rounded and constructed character, who becomes far more interesting for it, especially the few times we get to see him through other points of view.
  16. Wow...duh...I'm going to go hang my head in shame destroy all the evidence. What a total brain fart are you talking about? Edit: I've pre-bribed you with a reputation point, you are now obligated to edit the post to help me save face...please?

  19. I evened out your negative vote. But as someone who used to struggle with depression daily, and sometimes have trouble still, here's some things that might help you understand: Depression is painful. I think that's why Kaldin still is one of my favorite characters, is because I completely understand his state of mind. I've been there and back, and there and back again. Yes, it's possible to try and overcome it, and I've been a lot more successful than I would've thought possible eight years ago, but he definitely has a trigger, considering his hardships. Storms, the man is probably still grieving over his dead brother. That alone could take years, and that's before the inclination to depression, and all the rest of his problems. The thing is, Syl is exactly what Kaladin needs. It takes a powerful positive force in your mind to change things, at least it did for me. Constant work at positivity over the course of years is what it took me to manage my depression. It's not a change that happens overnight, in fact, I think it will be prevalent throughout the first five books. Kaladin has been taking steps to improve, and he has at a believable and rational rate. These kinds of changes don't happen overnight. Even with her help, an outside force can only help so much. The battle is very much an internal one. It's not as simple as just being "shaken out of it." There's a sort of muffling effect depression has on your personality and the way you view the world. It really is a fight to overcome that, even with a good support system in place. I remember my sophmore year of High School, on my birthday, I stole the show at the spring musical The Fantasticks, with nothing truly bad happening, and I ended up crying in a depressed huddle in the dressing room when everyone else was onstage. I can't explain why. It doesn't make sense to me now, and it didn't then, but it just was. None of this may make him any more interesting of a read, but it makes him real, and I think he will continue to shine brighter as time goes on, and quite possibly, if he survives to the ten year gap, he might come out one of the happier characters despite everything that's to come. But then again, it could be that this is a giant tragedy that makes us going running to George R. R. Martin to console us (hee hee.) All of that said. Jasnah all the way. Whoooooo! Using this information, I'll probably need to do some editing of my physiology theory.
  20. ....and I've been airport bookstore hunting all this time! Ahhhhhh! Oh well, Brandalized copies are almost as cool...almost.
  21. Haha that sums things up so far. I'm assuming you mean Berelain on this one (not to try and encourage spoilers, but predictions are fun when you guys get to snicker when I get things very wrong. But spoilers will happen and I take full responsibility for what anyone says on here and spoils things for me. I did come to you guys. ) I just finished up my audio book reread on The Shadow Rising, and I want to say that it definitely changed my opinions on a few things. The first, namely being the more negative nature of my original post. I was quick to critique, but it really wasn't as bad as I made it out to be in my head. The audio rereads have been a great experience for me in the Wheel of Time so far. I think that listening to it has been a much better experience for the story, and since I usually pop on an audio book when I'm doing things or driving, it was actually very nice to have the extraneous portions of the book. I think I was so quick to judge because the characters frustrate me so much. Yes, there are a few flaws in some of them, but overall, it was a great book. I won't say it's my least favorite of the four anymore. It was one of the less enjoyable reads for me, but the audio book is definitely my favorite. (On that note, I want to say how incredily strange it is to have listened to Kate Reading and Michael Kramer read through The Stormlight Archives 2 times through first. I barely recognized his voice when listening to Eye of the World. It's almost a sort of time Travel. Like watching new Doctor Who first, then watching classic. Well actually, my whole Doctor Who viewing in terms of chronology was a bit...wibbly wobbly.) I'm glad there is a way to break through shields. I was hoping that wasn't going to be a "haha, the battle is over" deal. If I'm not mistaken, a shield from the opposite gender is much more effective than one from the same power source. One thing that still confuses me, did Mat actually die? If it gets explained later, don't answer that, but if this is just a hanging unexplained phenomenom, I'd like to just put the question out of my mind. That whole scene was one of my favorites. Especially after learning a little bit about them later on in Perrin's storyline. Mat really is his own worst enemy, and somehow he ends up better off for it! I was also unnecessarily harsh on Faile. I don't think I really understood the whole Aiel undertext between Gual and Chiad, especially with the talk of Gai'shain. The whole "it usually leads to marriage" factoid went over my head the whole time. During the reread, Faile just cracks me up. Other than the Whitecloaks, who I still feel were extraneous, Perrin's story was absolutely wonderful. (When I mentioned wanting to throw the book, it was because it switched away from Perrin's story. I think it was any time it went to Tanchico. ) Rand's story arch was also very compelling the second time through. There's a lot of foreshadowing in there that I missed, namely Mat being shaken down for information without him ever realizing it. (You really need to trust at least one person Rand!) Aviendha and Rand make me smile. I think Rand is the most clueless of the three when it comes to women, and he's the only one who has real reason to wish for the other two's understanding of women. A few predictions that have either come into my head or were remembered: Rand's half brother is alive, possibly a new dreadlord, or at least will become one. He's the one that killed Rand's father. Verin has some sort of vision or viewing ability, maybe one similar to Min's that she has kept quiet all these years. I find it hard to believe she learned all this from books. I think that's why she's so attached to the ta'veren. They produce so many of the viewings that she's able to connect them to events as they happen, and give her a better understanding of the ability. Seems like this might be reaching. I just can't put my finger on what it is about Verin that unsettles me...she just knows too much. Especially this: Logain and Thom are going to team up at some point for their revenge on the reds. I'm not so sure it isn't deserved after what I've seen in all of the reds. Are there any Red Ajah Aes Sedai that actually seem to be a force for good? Rand will find a way to stave off the taint, not sure how. Maybe a ter'angreal. I don't think that Moiraine could handle the female ter'angeral from Rheudian, which disappoints me; but I think that Aviendha will be the one who ends up with it. I hope so at least. Unless Lanfear gets a hold of it. That would be...well, I don't know what that would be. Lanfear is crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if she sought out the bracelet from Tanchico and bound herself to Rand. Seems like it might be something she'd do as a last resort, and she certainly could find it the way Nynaeve did with her supposed control over tel'aran'rhiod. The Two Rivers will rebuild Manetheran, or something equivalent, most likely aided by Ogier. Rand and Perrin are going to meet Loial's mother, and only with their combined ta'vered powers, (they'll probably need Mat there too, for good measure, provided he minds his manners with the Ogier women,) are they able to stop her from marrying Loial off. Loial will eventually succomb to the longing in order to finish one last supremely heroic deed. He's been a continual font of entertainment, and a fiercely good character. I'm a sucker for a humble hero. (In that regards, I feel like he might be part of the inspiration for Sazed, at least in a small way.) Moriaine will die when she returns to the tower, at the hands of her sisters. The only Aes Sedai purely devoted to the survival of mankind. Her martyrdom combined with Suan Sanche will reunite the tower anew after another huge battle with many more needless deaths. That's all I've got for now.
  22. I'm not sure what you're trying to say in the first paragraph. Szeth did have Surgebinding abilities when he had the Honorblade. I speculated in my original post that the Surgebinders would still have the physical and healing advantage over non-surgebinder Honorblade wielders, but my main point is that any surgebinder using an Honorblade to access a surge not normally part of their order would have to use more Stormlight to get the same use out of those surges than a Surgebinder with natural access to that surge would.
  23. Hoid is exponentially more involved in Roshar than he had been on other worlds. If someone was going to notice him and "glimpse his implications," it would be on Roshar. Considering Taravangian's probability prediction intelligence is looking at the world through a macro scale, I'd expect he's seeing Hoid, as he is most likely working on a larger scale than Mraize is.
  24. I have to agree that the probability lies in it not being a lethal poison. We only have precedent of them using a non-lethal poison with the blow gun, and Mraize says that "Amaram's life belongs to another." Is it outside the realm of possibility that it's a lethal poison? No, but with text based precedent I think it's a more than reasonable assumption to make. Look carefully at the characters in that interlude that Ishikk talks to, especially the dialogue.
  25. This is a pretty straightforward theory. As far as evidence, I don't have any text released yet, but here are the two relevant WoB: Basically, I believe that if a Surgebinder were to pick up an Honorblade of a different order, she/he would be able to have access to those surges but at a reduced capacity, because in those two surges they are limited by the Honorblade. So if Shallan were to pick up Jezrien's Blade from Kaladin, she would only be as skilled as Szeth was as far as Stormlight use for Windrunning surges. Her enhanced physical abilities and healing factors would still be as strong as her Spren bond, but because she can only access those surges through the Honorbade, she'd be Windrunning at the reduced capacity that Szeth was.
