My concern has always been why so many of the villains you create happen to be female.

ETA: It's a bit odd to have a conversation online with you when you're literally sitting three feet away from me.

Hey, my most powerful heroes are women too. Maybe I just associate the fairer sex with ultimate power.

Also, it's made odder by the fact that you do expend the effort to speak to me irl, but only to say "I just edited my post" or "I just responded to you."

Overhearing KK talking to his 16 year old brother...

KK: See, if you regularly use violence, people start just staying out of your way.

Me: Yeah, that's kind of how it works.

    KMinion1: Really, Mama? You, too?

KK: You always look to Mama like she's going to agree with you. You forget that what became [KK] had to start somewhere.

    Me: Yeah, kinda.

KM1: Okay, already! I'll stay out of your chair.

Me: For crying out loud. That doesn't mean you can beat your brother for sitting in your chair!

KK: I don't beat him. I pull his hair, or sometimes, I drool on my finger and then touch the back of his neck.

    Me: Oh? Because you can?

    KK: [sheepish grin]

Thinking about it, there's probably a reason I mostly write villains in RPs.

    At WM...

KK: Ooh. It looks like those grackles have a piece of garlic bread.

Me: You're not taking garlic bread away from the grackles.

    KK: I like garlic bread.

    Me: That's disgusting.

KK: It's probably more than they can eat.

Me: You know I'm posting this.

    KK: [just laughs]

They didn't even eat it all. They were pecking at it when we arrived and they'd barely made any progress when we left.

    It's just a waste.

I mean... have you SEEN older science fiction and fantasy? A good majority of it is vapid kid's stuff.

First of all HOW DARE YOU.

A good deal--not all, but a good deal--of pulp fiction of the time was made up of low quality stories sold a dime a dozen for magazines appealing to young readers. However, these were not the people who defined the genre. The people who defined the genre back then were Isaac Asimov, from whom we get Asimov's Laws of Robotics. Arthur C. Clarke, who gave us Clarke's Third Law (the inspiration for at least one of Sanderson's Laws of Magic.) And Robert Heinlein explored countless social, religious, and scientific ideas in his books, even those meant for young adults. Even the great H. P. Lovecraft was published primarily in pulp magazines at first.

There's a ton of depth in old sci fi, provided you're looking at the plentiful, plentiful authors who have stood the test of time and not scraping the bottom of the barrel.

...what was this thread about, again? I just smelled disrespect to classic sci-fi and had my protective instincts triggered.

Apparently there's a lot of people upset that Iceland made it to the 2028 FIFA World Cup but not the US. This isn't Eurovision people! No one team/country is guaranteed a spot here! Honestly, I don't get when people get upset over the US not qualifying for something like this.

But... but... the United States is best country. What about those of us who hinge crucial parts of our identity on how the United States is the best at everything? What are we supposed to do? :(

I can't wait until my kids are old enough for me to troll on their interwebs forums of choice.

But it won't be the interwebs. It'll be some futuristic ultra-forum where you hook up your brain directly to a central server and think memes at each other.

You could wind up an old timer who has no idea how it works or how to use it... or worse, an old timer who understands just enough of the basic principle to rant about the new generation to anyone who listens.

@The Queen Mother, reading this post: "Your forum has a ton of in-jokes. Your community spends so much time talking you wind up with a lot of references that outsiders don't get easily."

Me: "Those aren't really in-jokes. One is a fantasy sub-genre and the other is a screenshot from a Pokemon game."

TQM: "...oh. So you're saying it's a youth thing."

Me: "I would say a 'young whippersnappers' thing."

I can respect that. It's hard to get more uncool than shorts, socks, and sandals.

    Et tu, Argent?

And hey, I do 90% of my socializing without getting dressed at all, so socks and sandals is actually pretty fancily dressed for me.

Granted, most of my socializing is on the internet, so... well... shut up.

It is bad when a king doesn't know his subjects :P you should visit more often or you'll be thrown over by @Calderis, our upcoming star ;)

I'm the king of the kobolds. I'm under no obligation to learn the names of these... these... mammals. :P

Be wary, Calderis. With fame comes jealous eyes. With jealous eyes come danger. With danger comes paranoia. With paranoia comes... actually I shouldn't share any of my secrets past that one. Heaven knows what you could do with them.

  10. I think Lightwards defeating Chimera is a pretty likely scenario. As for Lightwards turning on the Jager siblings... I have my doubts about that. It would be an extreme tactical goof by him seeing as he doesn't currently have anywhere near the capabilities to defeat them both. (Mainly Lucentia.) Lightwards does grow more irrational after each death but I'm not sure he's all the way there yet.

Destroying The Dalles is way more likely to happen. Arsenal is currently in his office having been told to cool off by Vondra; if something were to directly attack the HQ, perhaps, I could see Arsenal finally snapping altogether. He already has nukes in The Dalles. He just needs the moment to conjure a remote detonator.

Random thought--if Lightwards gets Upgrade, the destruction of vast swaths of the Oregon countryside would be immediately guaranteed. Armies of the undead would fan out in all directions, slaughtering everything in sight, burning and killing as they go. Everything killed by them would get up and join the fray. He wouldn't be able to take any of the big Epic-run cities like Salem or Corvallis, but he's one of the few characters who directly benefits from extreme levels of carnage and cataclysm.

I think that we can work to quickly resolve these big threads, then synthesize the character plot lines into something that can seriously mess Oregon up. What are you guys thinking?

I'm thinking about the irony of the idea of Adelmo finally convincing Backtrack that The Dalles is safest for him, only for them to turn to head in that direction and see a mushroom cloud on the horizon. :P

Tell me what I need to write and I'll write it.

If @Voidus is fine with it, then I'd love to hear something from Backtrack's perspective. It's good to read your characters again, Kobold. :)

It's good to read yours! :D

Hey, guys! After far too long (I won my fight to transfer with the school, if that's any excuse), there is a new Adelmo post up. You might notice I make reference to this post, which I link to in case anyone has forgotten about it. I hope you can forgive me for the details about Backtrack carrot-munching, @Kobold King. I wanted to facilitate movement of the plot, but not to god-mod. If there's any problem, I'll happily fix it.

Also, hello from England. ;) I'm currently interning at the University of Essex.

OH MY GOD COG, I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU COULD BE SO BLIND TO BACKTRACK'S CHARACTERIZATION. MUNCHING ON CARROTS GOES AGAINST HIS ENTIRE PERSONAL STORY ARC AND PAINSTAKINGLY ESTABLISHED BACKSTORY. IT'S LIKE YOU HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN PAYING ATTENTION.

    I kid, I kid. :P Great post!

I don't know if @Voidus wants to respond next or not. I wouldn't mind posting a short little reply from Backtrack, just to facilitate more conversation between these guys.

  14. I tried watching a bit of an old Nazi propaganda 'documentary' about Jews. I figured it'd be educational in an unpleasant sort of way to see what kind of subtlety or clever manipulation might have been involved in the build-up to the Nazi atrocities... but less than ten minutes in I came upon this gem.

"These Jews are being made by German forces to clear rubble off the streets following the Polish annexation. They are clearly unaccustomed to hard work, and they don't like it. They would rather be bartering or making loans, where they are in their element..."

    ...

I feel like this film was made not to convince decent people to become genocidal racists, and more to reinforce the conviction of people who already believed that. Which is scary in its own way... I think probably the only thing more frightening then the video itself are the comments under it on YouTube.
