According to a recent estimate, there could be as many as 5.3 *trillion* habitable planets within the observable universe. If only 1% of those worlds bore life in the same abundance as our own, and if only 1% of that percent gave rise to life as intelligent as humanity, then there could be as many as 530 *million* distinct alien civilizations waiting to be discovered and contacted. Think on that on the next starry night.
