I agree that that answer was very intriguing, but It's always best to pull the quote. Source This is still quite open. The opposition to Adonalsium could have been a group of people (Rayse and co., perhaps?) or organization, as opposed to some cosmic force. The question even remains as to whether that opposition played a real role in Adonalsium's Shattering; and if it did, to what extent.

Just simplicity, making sure evidence and discussions don't get fragmented.

Good thought, Nepene, but I think it woud be best if we held off until everything is in. Then we can put up a new thread and start fresh.

How quickly do you lose Stormlight? An inconsistency?
Kurkistan replied to Havoc's topic in Stormlight Archive
I haven't read the whole thread, so I apologize if someone has already given proof or perfect argumentation, but Brandon just confirmed that Kaladin holding stormlight longer than Szeth is a thing. Source -
A few are discussed in this thread. As it turns out, violence is not the only use for some things.

^An excellent point. I think the case in Warbreaker is a bit more specific than simply being healed by another, though. It seems that Divine Breath perfects beyond the merely self-described. I doubt LIghtsong saw himself as an Olympian god, yet he still took that form (as determined by the Form of a Returned, I've argued). His Divine Breath accessed something outside Lightsong himself in order to get at that "perfect" body. I would argue, then, that the "healing" done by means of Divine Breath has similar outside access, going straight to the question of "what is perfect human health?" rather than "what does this person's body usually look like?"

I apologize in advance for putting you guys through this again. I was going to post this as a reply to Windy's new Q&A thread, but it got a bit long and I didn't want to hijack the topic. Some background: Don't bother reading this. At the end of the day, I discover (in a very tail-eating, rambling fashion) that frame of reference is very irritating and means that any time bubble "moving" with a ship would not affect it's motion through space. That's what matters now. Windrunner's new thread also gave us some new information on FTL: I have some thoughts on this snippet here, but for now I'll just be posting my current theory of FTL in its entirety on paper. I may have said this before, but it's what's most plausible to me given our current understanding and one or two crucial assumptions (hopefully the "big piece"): Give our aforementioned frame of reference problems, large-scale "teleporting FTL" is all that I can think of at this moment. This requires a pair of assumptions to be manageable: bubble "anchors" can be set relatively fluidly and nicrosil/duralumin increase the size of at least bendalloy bubbles to some fairly large extent. Given these requirements, an FTL ship would need at least one bendalloy/nicrosil combo (or a mistborn or Hemalurgist or whatever: it doesn't matter) and one cadmium misting. How it works: First, accelerate the ship to as close to light speed as you can manage. There are a variety of ways you can do this--infinite energy from Skimmers, very violent Pushes with Coinshots on anchors, etc. Then do a series of "jumps" until you get near your destination, at which point you start slowing down. Procedure to "jump": For each "jump" of the trip proper, have the cadmium misting puts up a bubble that encompasses the entire ship so that the crew and ship's systems don't need to experience any of the "extra" time during transit. Then have the bendalloy misting super-bubble the ship with the aid of duralumin or a nicrosil misting. Hopefully this bubble is several kilometers, if not several hundred, thousand, or million kilometers across. From the perspective of Scadrial, the ship will traverse this region of space at several times the speed of light: the (cadmium-bubbled) crew has the same perception, after you factor in normal relativity for the ships "real" speed. To help things along with this absurdly large bubble, empty space could be far easier to bubble (as I suggested here) because there is less stuff to be affected in near-vacuum, so an improved Bendalloy bubble, instead of just being 5 times bigger or something as it would normally be, explodes once it gets beyond the confines of the ship. This all sounds plausible enough, but the real problem lies in frames of reference of the "bubblers:" The bendalloy misting needs to set his bubble's frame of reference to the totality of matter in local space: surrounding stars and galaxies, primarily. This will get us a good enough "motionless" for our purposes, and allow the bubble to be "still" in space relative to our near-light-speed ship. We're okay with not having any absolute "rest" frame of reference because the entire point of FTL is to traverse local space. If you want to be a bit more parsimonious, you could just set some local star or other as your frame of reference, and it should probably work too. The cadmium misting, on the other hand, needs to set her bubble's frame of reference to be motionless relative to the ship itself, and hopefully set to approximately the same (if not an even higher) "compression factor" as compared to the bendalloy misting's bubble. This way, the crew and ship won't experience centuries of travel subjectively. Bubbles cancel each other out (multiplicatively), so this could work, allowing the cadmium-bubbled ship to move through the space contained within a much larger bendalloy bubble. The crew-saving cadmium bubble won't slow the ship down because bubbles that are "at rest" relative to anything within them do not have any affect on that object's motion through space. The end result is that you get "teleportation" where the S.S. Vindicator moves through normal space in a series of quick bursts many times faster than the speed of light, like when Wayne uses his speed bubbles to "teleport" in AoL. If you get multiple bendalloy and cadmium mistings together, you can exponentially increase how fast these bursts are without any ill-effects. Just to reiterate, this makes key assumptions: 1) The ability to not only "decide" where to anchor a time bubble, but to have two adjacent mistings choose different targets. 2) The effects of duralumin/nicrosil on bendalloy mistings being such as to increase the size of their bubbles. -2.5) The emptiness of space increasing the size of time bubbles as they have fewer objects to affect. ----- And so that's that. I've said essentially the same thing before, if I recall correctly, but not so completely. Given that Brandon has said we still don't know "a very big important piece of the puzzle", I'm not exactly flush with confidence that my theory is right. There remains the slight chance that assumptions 1, 2, and possibly 2.5 are these pieces of the puzzle, though.

Thanks for the post. Some interesting stuff here. My thoughts: This one is interesting because it might semi-vaguely-possibly imply that Nicro-bursting does not always lead to the exact same result at using duralumin. On the other hand, Brandon allows for "one other specific set of circumstances," but he could be talking about Hemalurgy. Maybe using duralumin does something really weird with the effect of Cadmium/Bendalloy, like shrinking the time bubble down to just the person using it or something? That would be a bit odd, though, and shoot even my most basic FTL theory down (more on that development shortly). This one is interesting because it opens the door to more "mundane" Investiture having effects. So Returned, people with extra Breath, Hemalurgists, Elantrians, etc. could all be at risk. First off, thanks for the nod (unless I'm just being incredibly conceited here and you were referring to someone else) to my theory, Rubix. It is kind of wrong on all counts (due to frames of reference and Cognitive definition of "in" time bubbles, along with that pesky calculus), but that's how we learn. Second, we do get a fair amount of useful info here. Whereas before it was possible that FTL was a fundamentally mechanical innovation that was simply based on insights gained from Allomancy (so an artificial Bendalloy-bubble generator or a warp drive or something), we now know for sure that it's all magic, all the way. The word "propelled" is also interesting, as it implies that magic will be used to drive the ship through normal space, as opposed to some kind of Shadesmaric stuff or teleportation of another kind. As for the "big important piece" we're still missing: . I don't think we need any fundamentally new magic, since we've know for awhile that FTL was "built into Allomancy and Feruchemy," but I suppose there's some interaction or new use that we don't know about. You know what, I don't like that. I'm going to post a new thread on FTL. Watch this space. EDIT: Boom. I just can't help myself. I don't think this one necessarily implies as big a division as between AonDor and Forgery. I certainly hope it doesn't, given Brandon's previous comments about the Southerners having "the seeds of the three metallic arts" and, if FTL is derived from Southern influences, our knowledge about FTL being wholly contained within Allomancy and Feruchemy. More likely, they just use it in really weird and novel ways: a little bit of cultural differences + a little bit of innovation, stuff like Smokers protecting other's emotions and Seekers detecting Feruchemy.

Proposal: Switching some boards around
Kurkistan replied to Kurkistan's topic in 17th Shard Discussion
Anything would help. The threads are looking a bit barren at the moment... -
Last minute question: Are the changing beauty standards of Returned and the "plausibility" of Forgeries determined by the same kind of "cognitive ideals or concepts which have taken on literal personification over time" that some types of Spren represent?

If there was to be a Regrowth-based solution, it would have to be done pretty quickly. Once her Cognitive aspect adapts to being paralyzed, that's all she wrote so far as magical healing goes.

^No, she very clearly uses a something (Dalinar assumes a fabrial, but maybe not) that looks nothing like a soulcaster. Soulcasting fabrials apparently come from the KR's time, so other "fabrials" most likely existed as well. "It was a topaz entwined with a heliodor, both set into a fine metal framework, each stone as big as a man’s hand." (ch 19) -
I kind of like this idea.

Sounds plausible.

Proposal: Switching some boards around
Kurkistan replied to Kurkistan's topic in 17th Shard Discussion
You know what, we could use and acronym list. Would you be so kind as to get on that, Phil? Maybe just post the whole thing in the Cosmere section. As far as theories go, I plan to be very very careful with those. Hoid wrote the letter, maybe Shardic Future Sight, but nothing that isn't essentially all-but-confirmed and/or nigh unimpeachable. -
Solicitation for FAQs and their Answers - Cosmere
Kurkistan replied to Kurkistan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
^You know what? You're right. It's awesome enough to merit an FAQ. I hereby commission someone to write it up, due to my profound laziness. P.S.A. Just as a note to everyone, it's not just laziness driving me to do absolutely nothing. There is an absurd amount of value in a community coming together for this kind of thing, and I sincerely believe that not only will crowdsourcing create more and better FAQs, in the long run, but that the very process of generating these submissions will build our strength and cohesion as a community. -
Solicitation for FAQs and their Answers - Stormlight

It wasn't my idea originally, really. The sentiment has been floating around for awhile, then Phantom brought it up, I bragged, and Chaos commissioned me. -
Solicitation for FAQs and their Answers - Cosmere
Kurkistan replied to Kurkistan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
^Thanks, though I'll probably throw in "it's the universe where all of Brandon's non-Earth (of some flavor) works are set as of now" as well. Why'd you delete your list of possible questions? It's not as good as a full set of answers, but it's useufl if anyone else wants to pick up the torch. -
^It's not a soul-crushing spoiler, but, in my opinion, it's always better off not spoiling even the smallest part of the book. Even the fact that AoL's existence ensures the survival of the planet after the first trilogy is annoying to me.

Solicitation for FAQs and their Answers - Stormlight

^Thanks. It is an awesome word. Just a note, if it wasn't obvious: We do reserve the right to rephrase if, we judge it to improve clarity. Thanks for being chill with that. -
Okay, I'll start the ball rolling here. This isn't me actually contributing, though! This was the example I used instead of Hoid, iniitally, then I realized it could spoil other boards. Don't think you'll get me to work that easily! Q: Why can Harmony read Wax's mind, when Ruin (quite plot-crucially) couldn't? A: Because Harmony includes Preservation, who is capable of reading minds. Source: Word of Brandon Canonicity: Brandon-confirmed

Hello my fellow Sharders. Through some depth of insanity whose true cause we shall never know, Chaos has been foolish enough to grant me a grain of authority. Specifically, I have been commissioned to compile a set of FAQ's, format them prettily, and then reap in the accolades for everyone else's hard work. This decision has been made due to the increasingly large amount of "common knowledge" that newer members don't know about, as well as, obviously, to answer frequently asked questions in a centralized manner. As I am averse to actual work or mental activity demanded of my own person, I will be following the diabolical synergistic rout of harvesting crowdsourcing both questions and answers from the community at large. In my experience, this is a much better way to get actually useful results than me just locking myself in a room for a month and generating everything myself. The community asks and answers the questions it cares about quickly, responsively, and thoroughly with this kind of setup, and, most importantly, you don't have to place all your faith in one person (who happens to be me in this case) to keep on top of everything forever. At this point, I could go on a hunt for questions and answers from various threads that already have them, or simply spitball various things I know off the top of my head. But that would both require work from me and deny you, the community, of a valuable opportunity to get used to providing me with your work so that I don't have to do it. So I'll be leaving even the low hanging fruit to you guys. -------- Format: I would kindly request that you write your submissions in the following way: Q: Why is the sky blue? A: Sunlight reaches Earth's atmosphere and is scattered in all directions by all the gases and particles in the air. Blue light is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air in Earth's atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time. Source: NASA Canonicity: SCIENCE! So, for facts that we actually care about: Q: Who is Hoid? A: A character who first appeared in an unpublished work who plays a role in all of Brandon's Cosmere books, to some greater or lesser extent, and is capable of moving between Shardworlds. His methods and goals are inscrutable. See the source for greater detail. Source: Hoid article on Coppermind Canonicity: Word of Brandon, in the books Canonicity, so far as I can think, scales such: In the books directly Word of Brandon/Word of Peter Word of Inkthinker (or anyone else with some role in the making of the work) Sanderson-implied -(semi-vague but easily deduceable comment. Like Hoid writing the letter) Highly-regarded theory -(So based on Brandon's comments and/or nearly unimpeachable deductions from the books. Like the Letter thread before Brandon's nigh-confirmation of it.) Anything below this level is highly suspect. We might consider expanding the FAQ later, but we won't include less solid theories for the time being. There might be some room for sub-divisions, or I might have cut it too fine, but you get the idea. Just some kind of qualifier so that we know which one to go with if there is some possibility of conflict between a FAQ and some new fact or theory. You don't have to include canonicity or even a source for me to use a Q&A, but I and everyone around you would vastly prefer it, as it just makes everything easier down the road. Aims: I would like to see this FAQ cover a broad range of questions, from the simple "what's a shard?" to the more complex questions about Intent and Realmatics, with everything in-between for questions about individual series (such as how the 16-rule works in you-know-what-series, Cadmium/Bendalloy being swapped for you-know-what-metals, restrictions on Forging, etc.). Depending on how things go, it could end up being a big mondo-thread with a lot of subdivisions or spread out over various series-centric boards. The key is to get the content, though, and that's what I'm asking you guys for. I'll have posted this in every board, and will watch them all carefully and start collating the results once they reach critical mass. After the initial FAQ is created, I would like it to be updated on a fairly regular basis. As to how much information the FAQ should cover, I don't think anyone wants a second Coppermind. Relatively simple questions, relatively simple answers: just let people who are new or have been out of the loop know what everyone else takes for granted. And so now I leave it to you. Thank you in advance for your helpful (and excellently formatted) submissions. P.S. This organization (meaning me with Chaos behind me wielding a big stick) reserves the right to reject, edit, or rephrase any submission in service of the goal of most clearly conveying useful information to the user-base. Though that would take work, so I'd prefer not to have to do it too often.
