Would you care to share whatever else you heard at Connecticon (on a new thread in the News and Events section)? We have dearth of information from there, and this is certainly news to me.
-
Interesting. Where'd you hear that?
-
@Observer Yeah, I thought so about Spinners too. Then the MAG came out and, unless it's just incredibly contrived for no reason, the universe actually does help you out if you're lucky enough.
-
Yes, it being proportionate was an assumption, but I think it's a fair one. This concept of "charges" is wholly artificial, an acknowledged contrivance of the MAG. So you're left either saying that any even infinitesimal amount of Duralumin is enough to set off all other metals you're burning or you have to admit to some degree of proportionality--though I suppose you could claim it to be wholly arbitrary instead. We know it isn't all burned off, as you've provided yet more evidence for, so there's almost certainly some way of determining how much is burned off using some scale. I read what happens when you burn N/D as a runaway reaction: you bring N/D and some normal metal in contact with one another and you get a violent, runaway flash-fire until all of one or the other is gone. So N/D is essentially a catalyst which is also destroyed during the reaction (I'm sure there's a name for this, but I cannot recall it). Under such a model, it makes perfect sense that throwing in more of the suicide!catalyst isn't going to get you a more energetic result: it's all dependent on both metals, not one or the other. Under that logic, the only thing nicro-bursting a nicroburst would do is maybe speed up the reaction, but certainly not make it yield more energy overall. As for strength, there are several other avenues you could take to model more/less strength in N/D without needing to go your route. To wit: more efficient utilization of N/D (spending less to burn up more of the other metals) and burning off other metals over a shorter stretch of time (so 0.25s for a vial of Pewter vs. 0.5, for instance) jump to mind immediately. I'm sure there are other possibilities as well.
-
Ah, your compounding comparison makes much more sense to me now. Thank you. I do still think you're wrong, though If you'll recall, Vin has burned Duralumin several times without using up her entire reserve of it: In HoA, for instance, I believe she burns it twice in a row for different metals during her first fight with Marsh. That implies that Duralumin is burned off in proportion to whatever metal it's boosting. I conclude from this that if you burned more Duralumin/Nicrosil than you had some other metal for it to correspond to, the extra energy wouldn't have anything to do.

New option: LoR isn't that powerful: it knocks people off their feet. You really don't need to much force for that. The walls of the tournament venue were nice and solid, and, you know, walls. Force equivalent to a firm punch isn't going to faze them. Maybe a truly massive amplitude could give you wall-killing power, but not the kinds we've seen drawn so far.

New WoR posts don't show up on forum index page
Kurkistan replied to Shardlet's topic in Tech Support
Yes, this is 100% an intentional feature. Chaos actually had to stop thread titles from showing, back when he first made the TES subforum. -
Looking at deddinty's comparisons, I become more convinced that the shade of Kal's uniform being so light is due to lighting more than it's inherent color. You'll note that even in the original his shoulder is a more "cobaltish" shade, and that's still in "gold" light rather than normal sunlight.
-
And, as I think someone on the Tor comments thread said, the cover of the first book--the one used to represent the series as a whole going forward--is pure awesome without even the slightest drawback, so we're already doing pretty well.
-
@Shardlet Oh yes, I agree that he probably didn't land so hard he shattered the stone. I was simply reminding you that the effects Kaladin can gain from stormlight are not, as you suggested, limited to the Lashings.
-
You might want to look at the discussions we had on this thread.
-
Recall that stormlight also acts to strengthen and heal, even when it's just being held and not used for Lashings.
-
You'll forgive me if I don't start saying that I'm reading "The Mistborn Adventures!!" Myself, I don't really see the Wax/Wayne books as a series so much as a few standalones that happen to be tied together.
-
Ah, now my feelings are a bit better. I didn't think I was being that obtuse... (Unless I was, in which case sorry about that )
-
Sorry, I'm confused again. I suppose it's a habit of mine on this thread. Where are you getting FTL from that quote?
-
Yeah, I'm still not getting anything from your Compounding comparison. Sorry about that. As for the second point, that merits some thought. We know that you can burn Duralumin quite normally by itself: it just doesn't do anything. I imagine that the same holds for Nicrosil. Therefore, you can burn them without gaining any actual benefit or utilizing the power that they give you. I imagine that you could D/N burst Pewter on a person who's standing still not doing anything, and wouldn't see any impressive results. Similarly, I imagine that a D/N burst on, well, Duralumin or Nicrosil would result in the normal amount of power going to super-flare other metals and the rest going unused. Once again, the power of these two metals seems to be in enabling the full utilization of other metals in an unnaturally short time-frame, rather than in directly adding anything to the effects of those metals.
-
I fail to see any parallel with Compounding.
-
Hi, welcome to the forums! As to your question, I find that I doubt it. It seems that Nicorsil/Duralumin serve to unleash the full power of whatever metal they affect, rather than adding to it. If that is the case, then the power they unleash is always limited by the size of the <metal> reserve the last misting is burning.

Well, planets do have souls, so... OOOOOOOH : Spiking out a piece of the planet's soul and using that as the anchor? But it does seem to require "blood being in motion", but still... The Spiritual is likely informed by the Cognitive, at least to some extent. You won't form a Spiritual Connection to someone you have no regard for, I wouldn't think. Similarly, a strong "this ship is my home and it is not moving" might be enough to form or buttress a Spiritual "fact" to that effect.

Maybe, but before this announcement Brandon was talking about how he might be able to hit the January date if he got lucky, so I think he's probably talking about a downward "change" being possible, so far as time goes.

the most useless uses for useful powers
Kurkistan replied to king of nowhere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'm not so sure. What if Seekers don't hear their own pulses for the same reason that Tineyes aren't deafened by their own heartbeats: they just naturally filter it out? Just as I imagine a Tineye could hear themselves if they wanted to, I can't see why a Seeker shouldn't be able to detect the pulses they're sending out. -
There is some small Sliver of hope hidden at the bottom of a chasm, though I'm not holding my Breath. Brandon Sanderson WORDS OF RADIANCE is moving to March. But this is still subject to change. I will decide when revisions are done. Link

There isn't really that much negativity. I like the cover, at least . Even the criticisms are mostly nitpicks, and those are all that's left to be said, given that the "wow it's awesome" comments have already been suitably registered.
-
Well, if Brandon wants the time I can't begrudge it. And it really isn't that much of a delay.

Magic On Sel - And the Cognitive Identity of a Nation
Kurkistan replied to Youngy's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
*Hears name on the wind* If you'd like to draw upon another one of my theories to bridge the gap, I posit in this thread that abstract lines can be used to represent nations because of independently existing "Forms" based on human perception.
