No worries, Feather. School comes first. (Also, apparently this is computer flu season, because my computer's been glitching out on me, too. Here's hoping they both calm down soon.)

I think there's definitely something here. Don't know that Szeth's necessarily "healing" himself into madness, but I wouldn't be surprised if Stormlight has something to do with it. Between Syl's warning... ...and this WoB... ...I think it's pretty safe to say that Stormlight can do some bad things if you use too much of it. And Szeth has used a lot of Stormlight over the course of these two books with all the assassinations he's carried out, and flying all over Roshar, and fighting Kaladin. That, combined with the stress and guilt--I'm not at all surprised Szeth's mind has deteriorated as much as it has.

I'm pretty sure I like villains the way you do, Feather. (Jane can keep Thor. I want Loki.) >.> Also, chapter 43 was awesome. I want more Mraize. Seriously. And, sure, I've always liked Shallan, but I love Veil.

So I was watching last week's Cosmos with my sister, and I had a minor freak-out when this happened: (Image from this article. May not be exactly what was on the Cosmos, but close enough.) That's a simulation of the projected collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies. Is it just me, or do those galaxies look like Roshar? (More like Roshar than the Milky Way or Andromeda normally do, that is. I know we've already had encouraging, if vague, WoB on spiral galaxy being a good comparison.) Maybe this progression shows it better--the shift from ordinary spiral to Roshar-spiral. Or this one (I especially like the second, third, and fifth images.) Now, I'm not saying the secret of the Roshar map is that it shows how the Cosmere is about to collide with another galaxy, or is the result of a recent merger between two smaller galaxies. (Weeelllllll.... No. No, I'm not saying that. Not at all. Maybe a little. Think of the extra-Cosmere worldhopping! But no.) I just want to point out that, like, 10 pages ago Peter said something about seeing connections where we weren't looking for them, and a relaxing night of Hooke-bashing and discussing Newton's possible Asperger's was definitely not where I was expecting to see a Roshar connection. The Cosmere is taking over my life. (Not that I mind...)

We have a WoB that says Adolin and Renarin are both Dalinar's legitimate sons. (Though I can't help but notice that he never says anything about them both being Shshsh's sons.... )

And adding some minor Warbreaker spoilers to the WoR ones. Just to mix things up. *shrug* I could be wrong, but given who it is that's talking....
-
You know, I was actually thinking about posting a similar theory earlier. Not that Dalinar's wife was Shalash specifically, but that she's someone waaaaay more important than any of the characters suspect. (WoR spoilers to follow.) I don't know. I'm not 100% confident on anything, but my gut says Dalinar's wife is more than what we've been led to believe.

We don't have a corrected projection, but I sketched out latitude/longitude on the map waaay back on page 9 on this thread (holy crap, didn't realize it was that far back...) Anyway, Peter confirmed that this is the right general shape (maybe not perfectly accurate, but it gives you the right idea.) Here's that post. Anyone who wants to make a flat projection is welcome to, because I haven't got a clue how to do that.

As to why the Silver Kingdoms Map looks no different from the modern one: there's no way to tell how fast the migration is happening. I mean, on our planet, continental drift happens at a rate of 5-10cm/year. So it would take at least 10,000 years for the coast to move one kilometer. We don't know exactly how long ago that map was made, but 5000 years (500 years before the last Desolation) is probably reasonable, if not overshooting. (I doubt all those kingdoms survived the previous Desolation, so the map probably dates to the very tail end of the Heraldic Epochs.) If Rosharan continental migration is at all similar in pace to terrestrial continental drift, Roshar has moved less than half a kilometer. We don't have a scale for these maps, but I highly doubt half a kilometer's difference would be noticeable on these maps. And that's not even considering the possibility that the Silver Kingdoms Map is a modern recreation. It's an in-universe map, yes, but who's to say it's not a scholar's best guess as to where the Silver Kingdoms' boundaries lay?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Okay, now this is kind of out there for a theory, but I think we've already reached that threshold here in this thread. So. "The words came" almost makes it sound like someone is talking through "Taln." Is it possible that Taln sent out avatars thoughout Roshar to spread the word about the Desolation? I mean, one man trying to warn a whole planet is kind of crazy. TEN people trying to warn a planet is crazy (though slightly less so, especially with two people who can teleport and two who can fly.) I don't know how he did it. Possession of actual humans? Tangible illusions? Something along the lines of a Lifeless that can carry out simple commands and has superhuman reflexes but no real intelligence? (Maybe a false parallel, but the occasional dark looks and moments of near lucidity that we see in "Taln" remind me of how Vivenna kept seeing near-human emotion in Clod.) In any case, it would explain why Brandon is being so coy about "is this really Taln?" It is, but it isn't. Or rather, it's not Taln, but it's not anyone else, either. And would make the disappearance/replacement of the Honorblade much easier. Taln still has his, and Hoid or someone found/won/bought a Blade and left it with the Taln-clone. Wild speculation, yes, but I don't buy another Herald posing as/believing he is Taln. (Not least of all because that doesn't explain how Dalinar got a hold of an ordinary Shardblade.) And I do think "Taln" has too much knowledge to not be a Herald. So either Brandon's trolling us, or "Taln" is Taln, but not technically.

0.o And here I was coming home from work about to post about how Roshar looked like a spiral galaxy.... Or a Rorschach test. I hadn't decided yet.

Random, totally-not-insane question here: is there a single "Roshar-sphere" in Shadesmar? Like, there are spheres for everything else that humans view as a cognitive whole, so wouldn't their planet have one? Or their continent, or kingdoms at least? If so, would it be possible to have Soulcast the rest of the planet's landmass into ocean (or into vapor--looking at you, Steamwater Ocean)? Or to Soulcast the supercontinent into being exactly as it is? (Yep, toooootally sane here, guys. No way am I grasping at straws and trying to make lunatic ramblings a legitimate theory. Nope. Not at all.)

The Reshi Isles are really a covert Herdazian strike force on its way to conquer Iri. ...Yup, my brain is broken.

I love Rysn, and I definitely think she's going to be important. (Or at least I hope she will me. She's awesome.) But like Green Hoodie, I don't think she'll be a Radiant now that she has a larkin. (Though maybe she'll have some other form of magic?) And Green, I totally agree with you about Axies. He intrigues me so much, and I really want to see him as a Radiant/something, but I'm not honestly 100% convinced by my own theories. haha Willshaper!Lopen is still the one I'm most attached to. (If only because I need more two-armed-one-armed glowing Herdazian epicness.)

Maybe there's an Oathgate on a lonely island out in the middle of nowhere, and the knowledge carried over in some form from the shadow days. And who needs a ship? Just sent Kaladin flying out into the ocean (with plenty of spheres, of course) and have him search out the Origin. Or send Jasnah to Shadesmar so she can go hiking through the Expanse of Vapors. Heck, that's where she was when she was "assassinated," so maybe she's already found the Origin.

The legends say each one is new from the origin, but there's a quote near the end of WoR that says the scholars and stormwardens have suggested that it's all one storm continuously circling the globe. Edit: Here's the quote. Chapter 87, page 1049-1050 in the hardcover:

Just thought of something: the use of "Stormward" and "Leeward" on that map makes a lot more sense when you consider east/west to be curved lines rather than horizontal. (For example, by my estimation, the Shallow Crypts are nearly due east from Vedenar, not southeast like that map would suggest. So they use Stormward and Leeward to avoid confusion.)

Interesting theory. Personally, I figured if there was something mystical going on, it had to do with the Nightwatcher. Like maybe he went to her to ask for help healing after he lost someone he loved, and she gave him the ability to turn off his emotions. But him not really being Thaylen would explain the shaved eyebrows...

I have no idea how big Roshar is relative to Earth. But the maps we have only show ~1/4 of the planet. If the rest of the world is mostly ocean, that's a LOT of open sea. (Also, all that area in Shadesmar is mountains/plains/Spren cities/who knows what. I'm beginning to see how Jasnah could have spent months in Shadesmar. SInce I'm assuming she didn't want to spend all that time in the sea of spheres. lol) Though this does bring me back to my earlier question. The continent Roshar covers slightly less than half the planet, in terms of longitude. It takes a highstorm a day or so to cover that distance, but then more than a week to go the rest of the way around (judging by comments in chapters 88/89 of WoR--p. 1054 and 1066 in the hardcover.) If highstorms really do just circle the planet, why does it take them so long to cross the ocean, compared to their overland speed? Do they slow down that much? Or does it take a few days for them to "recharge"?

Eyeballed latitude/longitude on the WoK map. Plotted as many points from the Frostlands map as I could, reflected to the other side of the map, then connected the curves and added the northern latitudes connecting equivalent markers on the left/right border. Longitudes are NOT to scale, I'm sure, but are as close as I could get to 10 degrees per line judging by the three we have on the Frostlands and assuming the map is centered on an even longitudinal line. So not mathematically accurate but should be a good enough approximation for most purposes until we get a better reference. (Any cartographers out there are more than welcome to correct my placement.) Map 1 (With markers from the Frostlands map. You can see that these lines are close, but not exact.) Map 2 (No markers, for clarity.) One thing that I really like about this is that it shows that the central mountains are noticeably farther south than any other mountain range on Roshar (thus explaining how the scholars were able to determine the location of Urithiru from the position of the sun.) Also, if I'm even close to accurate on my lines, Roshar is set mostly below the equator and roughly between longitudes 0 and ~140W, or roughly proportional to Asia in terms of portion of the planet's surface. Edit: Well, my longitudes aren't far off from RShara's, so that's a good sign.
-
Assuming you mean the WoR Endpaper map, I doubt it. I mean, I can't be sure how similar to Earth's South Pole Roshar's would be, but If the compass is the South Pole, all the land around there should be basically uninhabitable, and there seem to be a lot of nations in that region. Besides, I don't think the longitudinal lines would converge there (though I'd need to do more than eyeball it to say for sure.) One thing that does have me curious--how much of the continent is contained in the Western Hemisphere? If it takes a highstorm ~1 day to cover the whole continent but a week or more to circle back around, that suggests that there's a LOT of ocean out there, but the longitude markings on are making it seem like there isn't enough room to account for the lulls in highstorm. At least, not if they're just circling the planet at a roughly constant rate.

I know the feeling. I'm coming up with all sorts of utterly groundless theories (They're Elsecalling points! They're the false trail Hoid left behind to distract Seventeenth Sharders! >.> They're the location of the MacGuffins the characters are going to seek out in book 7!) I don't even know anymore. But Luke, having one map to focus on would be nice.

Interesting theory... and I wouldn't put it past Wit to phrase his cleverness in keteks just to be frustrating. Unfortunately, it doesn't help me figure out what the significance is.
