I don't think an Allomantic spike would grant a kandra sentience. Spikes charged with a metallic ability don't warp the body as much as human-charged spikes, as we can see from the differences with Inquisitors and koloss. In the case of the kandra, they would need that "warping", because they need that base Preservation that's in people (and grants people sentience) to become sentient themselves. So it's a weird reversal in that way. As an aside, if a human was an Allomancer and became a koloss, they do retain their Allomantic ability. However, Brandon hinted that they may or may not have the mental faculty to use them. That's kind of the opposite question to the one you're asking, Ari, since koloss started human, then were twisted by Hemalurgy. So could a kandra be granted an Allomantic power? I think it's certainly possible. It'd be very challenging to do, at least, since mistwraiths would most likely have very different spiritual pressure points than in humans.

Good catch! Edited.

@Tangletalon - We will check for double entries. It's okay to comment more than once here (your posts are all hilarious, guys), but what we won't tolerate is posting today "I'd like to be entered!" and then three days later commenting again, "I'd like to be entered!" You aren't fooling anyone with that, and if anyone tries that they will be disqualified. Make sense? Also, I have edited in the contest deadline, which is next Tuesday. Sorry about that. I guess Inquisitor Santa distracted me, but come on. Inquisitor Santa is pretty dang distracting...

Oops. I realized this morning that I forgot to put that in there. We will draw next Tuesday.

Yes, just comment here.

Hohoho, Sharders. I am Inquisitor Santa, and I'm pleased to be allowed to finally write for this site. Just because I slaughtered that barge full of orphans, the administrators think that's "too violent"? Lord Ruler, what a bunch of losers. Bah. You worldhoppers. I've heard about the legend of your "Santa Claus," and there's not one mention of his obsidian axes. Miserable cretin. I live in the north pole of Scadrial (technically), and you know what I do when I check my Naughty-and-Nice list, I don't give the naughty half-breed children a pile of coal. Though my axe is dark like coal, I suppose. In any case, I'm here to give you people on the Nice list a few special things: spikes through the eyes. Spikes made of fancy prizes! Unless you're a skaa half-breed, in which case, register in the contest anyone so I can hunt you abominations down! Kill, kill! FEEL THE WRATH OF THE LORD RULER! ... *pants* Where was I? Oh, yes, prizes. We have eight spikes--I mean, prizes: -A signed, numbered copy of The Alloy of Law. I'm being informed that this is in fact #781. -The Mistborn Adventure Game by Crafty_Games. This tabletop RPG game is set during the Final Empire, so I immediately praise these "Crafty Games" people for their obedience to the Lord Ruler. The RPG also has a short story by Brandon Sanderson himself, as well as some annotations on the creation of it. The game comes out December 15th, and if you win this prize, you'll get a digital copy of the book that day, and a hardcopy when it gets back from the printer. I hear the game is pretty fun. Of course, if you don't go play an Inquisitor, I will go down your chimney and chop your head off. -A paperback of The Way of Kings. Even as a paperback, it makes an excellent bludgeoning instrument. I give it four out of four bloody obsidian axes for its versatility. It's a good book too, I suppose, but if you aren't killing skaa I don't see much point. -A Mistborn trilogy box set. Maybe you people think it's popular, but this is a package of heinous heresies against the Lord Ruler. Just know that I'm always watching you... -A Warbreaker paperback. Too colorful, not enough ash. I like the sword, though. -A signed copy of Elantris. It's in great condition, not even a drop of blood on any of the pages. Which is a rather bizarre cultural taste of Earth's... -A full set of the cosmere: Elantris, the Mistborn Trilogy, Warbreaker, and the Way of Kings. I decided not to include Alloy of Law because it is full of even more traitorous lies! -A set of the four Alcatraz books--Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians, Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener's Bones, Alcatraz Versus the Knights of Crystallia, and Alcatraz Versus the Shattered Lens. These are more "funny" books, I suppose. Judging from the titles, it looks like Alcatraz fights a lot of people. It's probably not arena-style deathmatch, though... Wait, Alcatraz is on this world? Excellent. I know exactly how to cheer myself up now. An hour later... Alcatraz Smedry! Feel the wrath of the Lord Ruler! Wait what are you-- OW LORD RULER HE BROKE MY EYE-SPIKE! WHO EVEN DOES THAT THAT ISN'T EVEN RIGHT! *pant pant* That's fine, I'll just send him an axe he can't refuse... What? I'm being informed I can't send a bloody axe through the postal system. Your governments are an abomination to the Lord Ruler. I'm going back to Scadrial to kill some half-breeds now. Bye. 17th Shard's notes: *Void where prohibited, which is pretty much everywhere except Final Empire, since, uh, it's illegal to stab people's skulls with huge metal spikes. Or anywhere else on the body, for that matter. **You aren't going to be stabbed. Really. ***We're kidding about the void thing. We'll send the prizes everywhere, even internationally! To enter, just comment here, and you'll get a chance to win any one of these great prizes. Happy holidays, and remember to not kiss under the giant steel spike over your head. That'd just be irresponsible.

Wow, mad props to you. I had forgotten about the "on a strong day" reference. That's some friggin subtle foreshadowing, Brandon...

Really? I didn't remember that. Very cool.

I'd marry her.

I respectfully disagree. Administrators can change it at will. PM me. I'll increase the allotment for now. There's no good reason why it's set at three--I can make it any arbitrary amount. But it's probably best that people don't change them too much, in general. I'll make it seven or something.

I like this theory, Galavantes! At the Alloy release (my Alloy report is coming, for reals...) we asked how the Lord Ruler Soothed. He said that savants do have an upper limit to the power they grant, and that Elend needed to use duralumin to Soothe like the Lord Ruler, which obviously wasn't what the Lord Ruler was doing. Then Brandon said that the Lord Ruler did it by Compounding. As we all were shopping at Walmart for supplies, I basically came to the same conclusion: its Investiture Compounding. Let me describe the way that I thought about it, in case others are unconvinced. I described Investiture a little more specifically in my mind. That's really the million dollar question, right? What does Investiture storage do? Not quite, if I read the Alloy Ars Arcanum explicitly. Regarding Allomancy, it says: "The metal is a catalyst, you might say, that begins an Investiture and keeps it running." The spiritual connection to a Shard--your capability for Allomancy--is not an Investiture. Burning a metal, however, is one. So, knowing that Feruchemy essentially moves power through time, when you store Investiture, you are storing something like that. I can't imagine what other sorts of things Investiture could store, but let's stick to the point with Allomancy: you are just storing your Allomantic effect--an Investiture--that you can later tap. Maybe I want to save a lot of pewter to make my pewter drag easier. Let's face it, eating a bunch of pewter isn't tasty. So I'll just store up my nicrosilmind with a bunch of the effect of Allomantic pewter, then tap it when I want a lot of Allomancy. I'd imagine that, like tin, you'd have a nicrosilmind for each Investiture, like Soothing. A nicrosil Ferring who had any Allomantic ability, then, would be a huge boon, since you could do the equivalent of tapping a lot of "strength" in a short amount of time. Only instead of getting really buff, like you would if you were tapping a lot of strength, you're tapping Allomancy. You could ostensibly get a quick duralumin-level burst from that. And heck, it's not as if it's physically painful for you to burn metals--it's much safer to store your Soothing Investiture than your own health. It's a badass power. And, when you can Compound nicrosil... you have your Allomantic ability stored, and now it's enhanced from the Compounding. So you get more Allomancy for free. When you're the Lord Ruler and best Allomancer there ever was, that means 1. You can store a lot of the Investiture to begin with, and 2. Your Compounding is holy crap awesomely powerful. Can you imagine a nicrosil Twinborn? You could Compound nicrosil bursts. Wow. Of course, the specifics largely depend on how storing Investiture works, but I think this is the clearest way. It's more specific than how you described it, Galavantes. As for if the Lord Ruler knew of nicrosil, we asked Brandon that, and he said with his signature smile, "the Lord Ruler knew lots of things." Plus, you guys, Sazed suspects the Lord Ruler knew of them:

Let me say on behalf of 17th Shard: Peter, happy birthday! We hope you had a great one. You're awesome, and we're extremely honored to have you here at all. Thank you so much for everything you do. In celebration, we are having Ookla the Mokvial! For those of you who weren't around on Time-Waster's Guide, Peter's old username there was Ookla the Mok. And, Peter has been given many nicknames by Brandon on the Acknowledgements page, like the Incalculable Peter Ahlstrom. So you can join in on the celebration by changing your username for this week to be "Ookla the [insertadjective]." We've wanted to do this a while, but it never happened on TWG. It happens now. To change your display name, click the drop down menu on the upper right of the site, click My Settings, and then click Change Display Name. (It may be a good idea to have an avatar so people aren't totally perplexed by who you are this week)

Right, I need to close this topic. Falsified.

Dragonsteel is the second big epic, seven books long, though the first two (Liar and its sequel) are offset in time from the main Dragonsteel arc. 10 Stormlight 9 Mistborn 3 Elantris 2 Warbreaker Silence Divine 3 White Sand (it is a trilogy) Dragonsteel: Liar of Partinel and its sequel, 2. Main Dragonsteel sequence, 7. = 35. With Alloy, 36. (You can find Brandon talking about this in the Reddit Q&A, though he added wrong there) Hmm. I thought for sure it was 37. I think Josh and I got into arguments on whether Aether of Night is still going to be a cosmere book. Maybe that's what I was thinking of.

Yes, please.

Theory: Endowment Recently Arrived on Nalthis
Chaos replied to Windrunner's topic in Cosmere Discussion
At Alloy, when Zas asked if Drabs can Return, Brandon said pretty much no, at least in the way that we understand Returning. He implied that there could be a way to Return differently. Vo could have Returned in that way. -
This is awesome. I'm totally shocked, actually, because Brandon's said originally there was going to be 32 or 36 main cosmere books, and the known ones are at 37 with Alloy. interesting that there are other planets, which maybe don't get books.

I know what natural selection is, thank you very much Perhaps this Spiritual Selection just moves faster, for whatever reason.

That's funny because you pretty much echoed my current feelings on the regeneration problem. I've thought about it a lot since I posted this theory. I think it's likely that either takes more power to go against its intent, or it takes longer for that power to regenerate, or both. (I need to make a dedicated Regeneration Problem topic...) That's an interesting way to think about how magic developed that hasn't been said on the forums. I don't know if I completely buy it, but I need to meditate on it. If that is truly how magic developed, that would be a major paradigm shift in our thinking...
