  1. Currently drafting my post on the reputation system; sorry it has taken me so long. It might take me longer, because I'm not fully pleased with this initial draft.

  2. Catacendre, from my knowledge, is basically the same as the Final Ascension, which is Last Ascension here. Hmm. That last one is probably an error. If you see inconsistencies, please post them. This is not quite the final version of Shadows as there is still a proofreading stage. It is not too late.
  3. I would like people to chill out a lot here. That would be really awesome. Maxal, I'm sorry things got downvoted. They are now in the positive rep. As I've always said, these things average themselves out, and they did. Just... try and give it a little bit of time for it to actually average. I've gone through every post of yours in this calendar year and none of them are negative. Like two posts that have rep averaged to 0, but that's two out of a lot of posts. There was a very small percentage of downvotes compared to your upvotes in this calendar year. Statistically speaking you are incredibly valued in the community. Kobold and Silverblade. You are not moderators. Please do not pretend to be moderators. You will be receiving more specific PMs, but you need to chill way down. My apologies for my downvote thread response taking a while. However, it really boggles my mind to see this level of effect to that. Especially when they don't stay this way. You do need to chill. If a post is red for a mere 30 minutes, like Kobold's case, should you really have such a vitriolic response? I don't think so. It might actually not be a big deal at all. As part of the new skin we'll have up and downvotes be more color neutral, so you know. But I would say... relax a bit.
  4. Well looks like I'll need to make that Shadows of Self spoiler board in fairly short order. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the giraffes yet.
  5. Tor today has released the prologue for Shadows of Self, the sequel to The Alloy of Law. Chapter one and two is now available too! I shall spoil nothing of it here, so you best just read it. You know, if you want. Shadows of Self comes out October 6th in the US and October 8th in the UK. After that, we will get The Bands of Mourning in January. With this plus Stormlight 3 news that Brandon occasionally tweets, the rest of this year will be really fun. Check out our forum topic here to discuss the prologue, here for chapter 1, and here for chapter 2!

Well, generally the email field will be sufficient for that. Social media is a good idea. Sorry, it's hard for me to implement without knowing what the people want

Yeah, so what would you want on there? I can add those.

Hah. I have it on extremely good authority Feather is a very decent person and incorruptible That's a really good question. I typically work on 17th Shard in spurts. I am very single-minded in my attention during my free time. If I'm working on the Coppermind, that's all I will do that week. If I'm playing Guild Wars 2, I'll just kill days with that. And if I'm doing 17th Shard stuff, I'm doing nothing else. So it is hard to say on average. It's probably less than you'd think; once setup is done, there isn't a great deal that I have to do, because you guys are so great at keeping things active. Oh man. My current book, the one I have been working on for way too long because I'm a slow writer, is about reincarnation. It's a little like Allomancy, except instead of burning metals, you consume stuff from your past life to fuel magic. I'm halfway through it and really just need a big chunk of time to consistently finish it. That's because my next series is way more awesome. There's so much I want to say about The Prophet King (the first book in that trilogy), but I don't want to spoil things. I will say that everyone can teleport. When I told Brandon this, he said "Oh, I tried that once and I couldn't make that work." I think I've figured it out, so... take that, Brandon It doesn't really have anything new, though maybe the authentication just makes it so the bots can't make progress. I'd love some Twitch-style abilities, but they don't exist. It's dumb. This will almost certainly not happen. The site will always exist, and I think it is much more sustainable to spend development on a good responsive design, that is good on all form factors. That makes way more sense than to support 2-3 platforms of mobile devices. It's a lot of effort, and that makes it so a change on the main site might be hard to implement on mobile. It just slows down development and will make updates even more irritating to do. I'm sorry, I don't understand the need for a responsive website to have an app. Sure, there could be some notification stuff, but there are robust email notifications. Is there a feature that demands an app? There would have to be, to require all that effort (and upkeep). All mobile platforms can have bookmarks on your home screen. What are you looking for? I'm really curious. Or we could just have an awesome responsive site. That seems much more sustainable. The platform of the web is not going to go away, and you target literally all devices at once. Yeah, let's go with that. I'm sorry. I don't mean to sound snarky. This is one of those things that keeps coming up and I've never had an adequate rationalization for why that is necessary or desired. Sure, this current mobile site sucks, but that is irrelevant in... a while. I'm not quite sure what you mean...? What are you looking for?
  9. Yeah, I do need to go clear those out... Permissions on that board are so screwy, and I always think I've gotten it right, but apparently not. It's bizarre.
  10. I still need to finish changing these. I won't have time until Monday but I will put it on the docket. Architecture will be depreciated.
  11. Hello everyone! Until I get done with my big response post (which should be done tomorrow), I will be closing this topic. I think the points have been made and there's not much need to continue making them, honestly. I will be addressing everything soon!

See here: http://bfy.tw/U8W Far superior to pi! Firstly, in physical contexts, the radius is what you always use. The diameter is irrelevant. That alone makes tau better. In quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, you have 2pi all the time. Seems like 2pi is more important than pi... Also, it makes radians much nicer, because tau would be the arclength of the whole unit circle. Then, tau/4 would be, shockingly, a fourth of a circle. Instead radians are needlessly weird because pi is just half a circle, so pi/4 is actually an eighth of the arclength of the circle. Tau = much better pedagogically! Honestly, this is probably just some person in ancient days using the wrong multiple of the true circle constant (2pi), kinda like how positive and negative charges should be switched. That, or in ancient times they really didn't appreciate radii as much. Shame. A close friend of mine gave it to me. Her mother came up with it. I'm glad you liked it; my instructions were pretty crappy, but it really is that straightforward xD You should, but I am worried I might never have MBI time again...
  13. I will be making an official response this week. I have been extremely busy. Maxal, I will be following up with you directly regarding potential abuse. However, I would note that your rep to post ratio is above .5 and for much of 17S's lifespan that's *extremely* good. Do not look at Kobold and lament; that outlier is not relevant here. You also don't RP which is a rep farm. Seriously, your ratios are fine and are not systemic of really anything. But if there is abuse towards you, I will discover it More addressing the topic at hand coming soon.
  14. Well, I am from Portland, so I am an Oregonian
  15. Here's my question. What the hell is up with these billions of Question #Whatever threads? I do not understand xD Never

...I might have completely forgotten about those new emotes... Oops. That's purely me being forgetful. Sorry about that. I can add those very easily. Those plugins look sweet. I will be investigating and using them; hopefully that BBCode one works nicely! It might not be perfect but it will be something.

Will (Shivertongue) creates the original artwork for the site. He's an admin, but recently is very busy and doesn't post much. Well, it is an MS in Mathematics. Do they even have Masters of Arts in Math? xD A great question though! The answer comes down to a few things. It mainly stems from me really disliking math research. I could never find an area that I liked, and the work never appealed to me. For this reason, I got my Master's (which in math, you don't do a research thesis for your Master's, which was a huge plus) instead of my PhD. After teaching and making quite a lot more money than a GTA, I can't go back to a TA stipend. I also just really have no interest in doing research for at least another four years, then being a postdoc, and basically being miserable. I enjoy teaching and am passionate about mathematics, so it seems like a good place for me. It also helps that I generally find the work easy. (Mathematics and getting a Master's was kind of the lazy, easy path for me, which sounds ludicrous, but it totally was.) I'll be an adjunct professor at some university for a while. Eventually my plan is to be a fantasy author full-time, and I think doing this will give me sufficient free time to do that. Why did I stay at MSU? I'm not sure how many places I applied to nearing graduation, but I remember that I planned to stay here that summer for my very easy summer job, so I hadn't applied to much. I applied to be a director of MSU's math learning center, as the two co-directors were retiring simultaneously. I am told that they were impressed with my interview, but the positions went to more experienced people. Fortunately, a week later, they offered me a position being a supervisor in the math learning center, which in exchange for being in there ten hours a week, it counted as a class. I also got enough classes so I was essentially full-time. It was a sweet deal, and this next year I am guaranteed full-time. I continued here because I didn't have much money to move and had no other job offers. They needed me to make my decision rapidly, so I accepted rather than waiting for another potential job. I think it will look very good to have a lot of teaching experience, so I'll be staying for this year, and possibly the next. I do want to move into a bigger city, as this one is getting old. I have no real opinion upon research, as I have no experience in that regard. There is certainly a lot of pressure to publish, but I think that scholarly research will correct any mistakes, given enough time. My university certainly likes research, but my department seems pretty relaxed, for the most part, and makes teaching an extremely high priority.
  18. Yeah, that would be my suggestion. What do others think?
  19. Wouldn't it make more sense to have Stormlight 3 be a generic Stormlight 3 title, since there have been a ton of working titles so far? Even beyond Stones Unhallowed and Oathbringer, I heard of two other working titles (but that was a while ago). I think it would be wise to leave it generic until it is official, honestly, so we don't have to move the pages a bunch of times depending on which working title Brandon is leaning to.

July I think, 100% by the end of summer. Art takes a while.
  21. Regarding HLCCs, it says "Articles should never be in multiple ones of these." That's a requirement on articles, not categories. Categories can be a member of both, and when they are, they are indeed listed as such in Help:Categorization. Magic users, as an example, should be in both Characters and Magic categories. However, you don't mark Kelsier as Magic, you only list him as a Character. Regarding your second point, I agree. It is not necessary to list Allomancers in both Magic and Magic users. While the high level content categories are always applied to articles of that type (for example, every article about Magic should be tagged with Magic), categories do not need to be made this way. Typically the way subcategories are set up, it's more hierarchical. In Category: Characters, you have a bunch of subcategories, which can have more subcategories. That lowest tier does not need to also be listed in Characters. If they were, the main Category: Characters would have a bunch of categories that don't need to be seen on that page; you'd browse to, say, the Ethnicities category first, where you'd find the characters by ethnicity. Long story short, the subset of Magic users don't need to be in Magic. So I'll adjust specific magic user categories like Category: Allomancers to remove the Magic tag, while also giving them the Allomancy tag. Thanks I'll add this sort of stuff to make it more explicit in Help:Categorization.
  22. In case you missed it, I made a huge revision to the cosmere article! Check it out: http://coppermind.net/wiki/Cosmere

Nope, you just would say @Whoever and it happens. It's nice! I can definitely see it useful for book discussions and theories to summon in a particular expert on the topic. The usual BBCode view is gone. I know, it is sad. However, you can paste in BBCode and it will render exactly the same, but when you edit it, the BBCode is not there. There is a Source view, but it contains the HTML view. The reason I suspect that this current editor is finicky is because it translates BBCode to HTML, and back and forth. What is actually stored in the database is HTML. So, the HTML view exists, but I've been advised that it is obviously a bad idea to let people arbitrarily paste HTML. So... that will probably only be a mod-only thing, unfortunately. The thing you linked to is exactly what the editor looks like, though I can customize the toolbars on desktop, tablet, and mobile respectively. It is a CKEditor thing, and supposedly I can just add plugins to it. I'm not sure how well they'd work, but I can totally take a look, especially if there's something you would like in particular.

Right here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/1683-i-would-like-to-announce-part-2/?p=274000 You wouldn't recognize the ones we destroyed for this, though. Let's just say we showed them what our black magic looks like. (Answer: it's Hemalurgy.) Now's a fine time to discuss things a bit more! Our current version of IPB is 3.4, and this new one is 4.0. It's a big rewrite to much of everything and restructuring on the backend. But it isn't all backend stuff. Let me try to think of it all. The big headline feature is that there's responsive design to the site. It's the same skin and features regardless of if you're in desktop, tablet, or phone. No more neutered mobile site! It's so much more slick on mobile now, and you have all the features of desktop stuff. And this really does work on all pages, like individual member profiles. It's really cool. There are now Q&A forums. We will be making a subforum exclusively for cosmere questions, and people can vote on the best answer and such. That'll be a huge boon. There are a lot of features for mods and admins that you guys don't really care about, but are very cool. Minor things that are nice quality of life improvements: 1. You can now undo up or downvotes. Thank Harmony. 2. You can now tag users in posts, and users (if your notifications are set correctly) will get a notification. There are also some alterations that are... well, let's say they are not strictly better than what we currently have, but are merely different. Remember, this software is a ground-up change so things are... different. Search is different. It is debatable better, but I'm not totally convinced. That said, I still need to see how it all looks with all our data. The editor is also very different. It's supposedly a much better visual editor, but you know me, I'm a big fan of the coding layout, where you see all the BBCode. And it's... it's not the same. Maybe I'll get used to these. I mean, we'll have to, because the benefits outweigh the downsides. That's the software side, but we're going to have some cool stuff that we are doing too. Do you think the logo and background are dated? Yeah, we agree, and the new stuff is nice
  25. Use {{culture}}, not {{character}}. The Ethnicities and Nationalities infobox is depreciated. However, I am also not sure what should be in the World parameter. Joe, some guidance?
