Strategy to stop spambots (from another forum)
Chaos replied to Twenty@20's topic in 17th Shard Discussion
Agreed, I like BBCode a lot. I never use the current visual editor. The editors do have HTML support, including in the new one, but it's a security risk to have people put arbitrary HTML, so this won't be a feature members can have access to, unfortunately. -
Strategy to stop spambots (from another forum)

I'm just saying those posts have an excessive amount of symbols and I want a way to have that excessive amount to be automatically hidden, if not banned. It's frankly insane that such abilities don't exist. Both but they don't do anything against these bots. We obviously ban both. -
By the end of the summer!

Happily. You will see that we are very committed to having 17th Shard be a place for respectful discussion, and it's obvious you don't want that. (Note everyone in my post when I said there are some people who just can't listen? Yeah, don't do that. That makes you a jerk.) EDIT: Thanks, Lark. That's how it is done Cracknut. It really isn't that hard...

Yes, they should also apologize, but maybe instead of causing fights, go step away. If you think someone has wronged you, be the better person with excessive sweetness. Or walk away. Do not escalate things. And you should be sensitive to others, because it can be extremely hurtful. You best apologize and be respectful. This is your warning.
-
Be nice and give people the benefit of the doubt. Be respectful. That's incredibly offensive, and you should apologize immediately. You should also be more respectful. Everyone: Take it down a few notches, and be very respectful to one another. I will not tolerate anything less. EDIT: Tough crap, you will respect others on this forum.

Well, I'm male, but like many other guys who posted in this thread, I'm not the stereotypical "masculine" guy. That image is really false. Sure, there are those very athletic men. But I think it's a shame that culture seems intent in its obsession of male "strength," and that they can't show emotion because they wouldn't be strong. That's dumb and extremely dangerous, because it can often mean that depressed men just... never get help. It's horrible. The gender stereotypes are so weird. I'm awful with cars, and am not really a handyman (unless you count tech troubleshooting). I love to cook, though admittedly the things I cook are predominantly meat related. I like cleaning. I also have a ton of female friends. In fact, my friend pool is totally dominated by women. I'm just that guy that gets along better with girls than he does with guys, just as I know many girls who get along better with guys. Still it seems that men who have more female friends than male friends is pretty uncommon. At my eventual wedding, I'll definitely have girls on my side of the bridal party I don't know why I get along better with girls than guys. It wasn't like this during high school, but in college on, it was. It might be because whenever I talk to guys, we talk about things, and not ourselves. With girls, I feel a lot more comfortable about talking about relationships, and I feel like I learn more about them. There's a depth there that I often feel lacking in male friendships... It also could be that I react severely against male douchebags. You know the ones, who are arrogant and just think they are always right, and warp everything around their own beliefs. My dad was like that, and I see men like that. The ones who always claim to be "strong." Let me tell you, true strength is not by pushing people away and shaping everything the world gives you into your worldview. The best people are the ones who listen and can understand other people. And with that, real strength comes from being you, and being kind. You don't need to fit some stereotype, but just discover what you are comfortable as. Gender stereotypes and roles are silly. It makes me really happy how my brother is raising his daughter with giving her typical "boy" toys to play with, like trucks and vehicles. She can have adorable princess stuff, but that fire truck makes cool noises and drives by itself, so why would you not want that too? That captain was hilarious. Love him.

Firstly, the new site will have responsive design and so the mobile site will be fully featured. (Also, though visual editors are good... I am actually very worried about the removal of BBCode in the new version. I don't trust visual editors if something goes wrong, and they frequently do. It is not inherently better without BBCode.) The suggestion is not a bad one, but I do worry, because often a member does post in Introduce Yourself when they register. I could have it enabled so new members can post new topics there, but then wouldn't bots just spam there, and then upon them doing that, spam elsewhere? I guess it is worth thinking about but it seems like a band-aid solution that isn't good to new members. The features I want from something like Twitch chat would be words that ban people for using certain terms. And unfortunately such methods don't exist for some stupid reason. It annoys me to no end. Also, for the people who are suggesting CAPTCHAs: obviously. We have that. Have had it for a long time... -
I checked and it is still present in the YAs. I'd need to look at the Bennet.

He did not mention which is canonical.

I've emailed Peter about this before. He knows! There was a similar error in Elantris (two names for the Shu-Keseg holy book) that are resolved.

I, personally, am not in regular contact with him. Josh and Mi'ch see him a lot. They play Magic with him on occasion. I don't live in Salt Lake, so I don't see him nearly as much. I have to drive seven to eight hours to get there, so it's usually for a busy signing. This also means I end up helping at the signings, and so I talk with Brandon just briefly at the end of them. Maybe someday when I'm in Salt Lake more!

Last year was Interstellar for sure. That might just be my favorite thing. This year would probably be Jurassic World. That was so good.

I don't actually the visualize the banhammer, because it is really just a button Exactly! Those are default icons in this software package. We really need something better. <3 <3 Absolutely. It's the number of years that the Well of Ascension took to refill (well, pre-Catacendre), and is a power of sixteen, of course. In the original rep ranks, 1024 was the highest, so it will always be a rep level of some sort. I tried to make interesting numerical things with those. For example, "Prime" happens at a prime number. I had fun with those. 1. Ignoring WoBs or being belligerent when people tell them to you, as if you don't actually want to know what is going on, and just want to ignore people. There's another thing you can guess, and maybe I'll finally have my freaking post about downvotes done now that proofreadings are finished... 2. Oh man. Well obviously we are excluding the hordes of spambots. It's hard to get a firm number, because clearing the spambots means it is easy to accidentally delete the other banned members. (It's important to keep them around because of certain metadata associated with the account in case they decide to start making more accounts to spite us.) I'd imagine it's less than twenty. 10-20. But it might be slightly less than ten, too. 3. Not at all! Both casual and hardcore should feel comfortable here. 17th Shard did start very heavy on the theorizing front, and I am really happy that is not all the site is. Of course theorizing will be a critical part of the forums here, but it should not and cannot be the only part of it. We are seeking a wider audience here. That's why I'm pleased that there are a lot of Reckoners fans. There's finally a non-cosmere series that gets actual posts. So few of the non-cosmere works actually translate into activity. The more there are of those, the more people who are not up-to-date with the cosmere will feel comfortable here. Obviously, I'll be theorizing when I have good ideas. I need to participate in those more. And maybe reply to my own topics, like Realmatic Attributes. I think I just posted and never really kept on it. I get bored these days. I'm really busy juggling projects. Totally unrelated, but I actually wrote prose! Real prose for my own books! So I guess The Prophet King is officially a thing. It was very unexpected, but rereading Elantris made the words flow nicely. I am pretty pleased with it, though I worry the beginning is a bit boring. But my main character turned out very well!

BAN EM. (Just kidding.)

Let's go with "not my crappy campus's toilet paper." Crap pun fully intended. Seems as though that while signatures appear in the desktop and tablet breakpoints for the responsive design, they are hidden on the phone version. Probably the easiest solution, which means nothing will change. 1. French vanilla. I'm boring. I actually didn't like ice cream until college, so I'm behind the times. 2. Japan, obviously. 3. Hmmmm... well, since rhyming depends only on the end of the word, WeiryWriter I've seen a few good vines though don't look for them, nor particular care. I dunno. Responding to my answers is definitely a thing you can do, though! It'd be cool if this got more conversational. Apparently that's the reputation I get... I don't think I'm scary most of the time. I'm pretty unassuming in person. However, I've taught full-time for a year, and even longer part-time, so I am pretty practiced in being... commanding. That probably has something to do with it. 17th Shard gives me a lot of practice in very tersely getting people to stop their stupid crap. I am forceful in doing so. I suppose teaching has taught me that I am really sick of people's stupid crap. "You two, tone it down ten notches. This is a stupid argument, and go away from the computer and make a sandwich. Maybe then you'll get proper perspective to realize the scale of the stupidity of this situation." The things I wish I could say. Most arguments on here are dumb because both parties are being totally ridiculous. So when I am cross... yes, I am very terse. I also don't tolerate stupid theorizing. I swear if people try to stir up crap saying Calamity is a Shard one more time... I do really like wielding the banhammer, though. I think some extra distance in the community does help giving a balanced perspective, so I don't take sides or show favoritism. It is a minor benefit to being less active than I used to be (though I want to be on more). I'm numbering your list because if you're going to have so many questions... 1. A lot of mods suck. Just because you have imaginary internet credit doesn't demand respect. It is earned. And a lot of mods just defend their tiny bits of power to the end... 2. Nope. 3. Rarely. 4. Smoking; weed or otherwise. 5. Societal pressure to make women seem pretty, I guess. 6. I don't recall specifically but I remember having positive experiences when you were Snoopy. That's the best I got. 7. I think you know The dark gods do, too. (Though seriously, baby oil is a different thing because it is for babies. It is not like the other.) 8. "Sometimes Laziness Does Work Out, Well, If You Find STEM Fields To Be The Lazy Path." 9. I got a scar on my forehead from when I was learning to bike. Fell forward, helmet slipped upwards. 10. That would be great if I remembered such things off the top of my head. I find these types of questions hard to answer. 11. My accents are universally terrible. Never will you see a person merge Scottish and Jamaican with such fluidity. It's bad. 12. It's a boring game. I haven't played in an extremely long time. 13. Actually, absolutely nothing. Apparently that's weird. 14. Nothing comes to mind. 15. Hmmm... Surely someone like Einstein.

That is interesting. I may be a bit too hasty. I'm going to be honest, though, I really don't think religion is for me. I don't want to live believing in sin, or temptation. I don't think it is a useful construct to me, personally. At a very central level, it is very hard to believe Christianity (the whole idea of "being saved") when I don't think sin is useful or even a real thing. I will not submit to a thing that philosophically I do not abide by, nor remotely desire to. For me, there is no conflict between sin and the divine. Merely a construct... I would rather emphatically not be saved, and prefer to focus on this world, rather than a potential afterlife (and I truly do think you should do things to help the world we have, not to get into an afterlife). And even more deeply than that, I don't even want there to be an afterlife. I don't think there is one, but if you gave me an option, I think I would turn it down. That might sound insane to believers, but I don't want that, and am completely satisfied in belief being totally absent in my life.
