Shardcast: Starsight Release WoBs 1 (Into the Weeds)

Chaos

Whoa, even though there was no Starsight tour, the release gave us a lot of crazy Words of Brandon. We go deep in the weeds this episode. But first, Eric has to tell everyone about his fiance, and we also discuss an Eshonai reading from Stormlight 4. Oh, and no big deal, Brandon finished the rough draft of Stormlight 4. Exciting stuff this episode!

We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), Grace (thegatorgirl), and joining for the first time, Marvin (Paleo)!

Our next episode won't be two weeks from today, but it'll be next Friday! Hooray!

1. Congratulations to Eric & Jess!

2. Why was there a gap between Odium wounding Ambition and her death? The most plausible explanation is intervention by another shard (Justice/Judgement). Odium splinters this third shard and the investiture tied to it and an unstable perpendicularity is left on Threnody (compare with Honor's unstable perpendicularity on Roshar).

3. If shattering and splintering change the laws of magic in cosmere then Hoid telling Frost "The old rules no longer hold" makes a lot more sense. You will notice Frost doesn't challenge Hoid about this claim.

4. What if Mistborn Era 1 is the story of cosmere on a much smaller scale? Some similarities: an all powerful oppressor (Adonalsium and Lord Ruler) is destroyed by a ragged group of rebels (Hoid plus the sixteen future vessels and Kelsier's crew) who have no idea what forces they have unleashed. Bonus parallel: whoever Hoid lost (see his conversation with Frost) could correspond Mare.

Yikes. So, this was my first time to listen to the podcast. I’ve read all of the Stormlight books (and nearly every other Sanderson book) and thought I was pretty knowledgeable about the Cosmere, but you guys make me feel like I’ve never even read the books! You guys go really deep. You were talking about things and even characters that I didn’t even remember from the books. Keep it up, though. I just need to catch up I guess.

I'd recommend going back to 2017 and listening to the podcast starting when Oathbringer released. You'll find that a lot of the things you may be confused about are things we've only discovered over the past couple of years.

(Meaning go listen to old episodes, don't literally time-travel to 2017. That would be silly.)

Also as a general note, Stormlight 4's second draft is now at 90% on the progress bar on Sanderson's website! HYPE!

I realized I implied time-travel. My bad.

Thanks for the recommendation! This seems like a great community. I definitely need to catch up on the discussion.

Heh, a lot of us have been in this for a decade and more. I get that it feels kind of crummy to finish all these books and still feel like you are behind, and I hope we'll be able to do a few episodes geared specifically towards people in your position - people who just want to catch up without spending years of reading wiki pages, WoBs, and forum threads. Just... not sure when we'll get to those.
