Shardcast: Fabrials and Soulcasters

Chaos
 Share

Today on Shardcast, we are digging into fabrials. What are they? How do they work? We discuss all the types of modern fabrials. We also discuss Soulcasters and ancient fabrials and their differences. We also talk a lot about why gemstones crack when a Radiant Soulcaster uses them.

We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Matt (Comatose)--who really needs to stop making tea during recording. Weird background stuff is his fault!

Next week we will continue and discuss, in exhaustive detail, about half-shards.

I just want to say that the emotional fabrial bracelet tells the user how someone else if feeling. The 10 different fabrials are each configured to one emotion so the bracelet can show if someone is feeling multiple emotions.

Gems probably cracked in Jasnah's soulcasting scene because she transferred the stormlight from the gem to the stone. (Maybe)

I suppose that the gems crack when they are put under too much strain, not because the stormlight inside them was transferred. They similarly are known for cracking when repairing shardplate. The gems, which are like a tool, are being overworked.
When people breathe in the stormlight from the gems, the people are put under the strain, and not the gems. This is why no gems have ever cracked by having their stormlight sucked. It also explains why the more stormlight you use, when it is depleted, the more tired you feel.

Another fun episode. Thanks for all of the effort!

A line of signing questions sprang to mind during the Block of Rock (™ Argent) portion:

  1. Is Jasnah's soulcaster tuly fake, or is it a functional soulcasting fabrial?
    1. (If answer to 1 is "functional")
      1. Have we seen Jasnah use her soulcasting fabrial without tapping her ability to access her Radiant surge of transformation?
      2. If a radiant uses a fabrial matching their inherent surge(s), is the radiant subject to the sort of physical effects a non-radiant experiences when using the same sort of fabrial (i.e. Kaza's body's degeneration into smoke)?
      3. Do gemstones in fabrials crack while being used by a radiant with a matching surge due to some sort of unstable resonances between the two?

I super agree with @WeiryWriter point on Jasnah's gems cracking. All the other gems we see getting drawn on are not ones that the Radiants are keeping about. It's mostly just whatever is lying about or money they are keeping on themselves. Jasnahs soulcasting gems would be repeatably having their stormlight infused and drained, over and over again. I can definitely see just the act of this transference being what causes the stress on the gems to crack.

@Servillius made a good point above, gems crack when repairing stormlight, assumedly because they have a set of large gems that are set aside for use in Shardplate repair and these are being used consistently.

The only other instance I can think of is the Kings Emerald Reserve. We never hear about them cracking but I quite like the idea of Kal returning to the armsmen one day with Alethkars wealth in emeralds all cracked and broken in a bag. Poor guy.

On Navani's Painrial: is it doing on a micro-scale what Odium does? It takes their pain and stores it up and can give it back later.

In OB chapter 118 when Navani adjusts the knobs on her painrial so that it causes pain instead of removes it. It doesn't explicitly say that it needs to be charged up by absorbing pain first, but I think that's what it is doing. Where is the pain sensation coming from if not from what had previously been taken?

I'm not sure about this, it's a reducer/amplifier. We've seen these things on their own without the switching between modes.

In regards to where the pain comes from, you know when you get pins and needles when your foot or hand goes numb as feeling is restored? It would be like that. Your normal amount of feeling suddenly becomes the numb and the pain you feel is just your normal sense of touch going absolutely haywire. This is how some poisons/toxins work, they don't do damage, they just send your nervous system into chaos. I imagine that's how the amplifier painrial works. Intense pins and needles across your whole body.

I see what you are saying, the painrial is kind of tricking the body into sending pain signals, maybe that's all it is.

I guess I'm getting what powers this thing? It doesn't work without the spren trapped in there and spren feed off of human emotions/ideas.

Quote

We don’t sleep; we don’t eat. I think we might feed off humans, actually. Your emotions. Or you thinking about us, maybe. It all seems very complicated. In Shadesmar, we can think on our own, but if we go to your realm, we need a human bond. Otherwise, we’re practically as mindless as those gloryspren.

—  Sylphrena on the nature of spren[9]

It seems to harness and channel the spren's natural attraction to and "feeding" off of emotions, in this case pain. Painspren on their own don't absorb physical pain, maybe just they are feeding off of the pain's cognitive aspect. By putting the spren in the gem it connects them to the physical realm and now it now can absorb the physical sensation of pain.

Spren normally feed off of emotion cognitively, the device makes it more physical/literal.
