Shardcast: Cultivation and Her Plans (Plus Another SA4 Reading)

This week we actually talk about the news, a brand-new Stormlight 4 reading! Then we discuss Cultivation and her plans. We carefully stay on the rails this time, even though we kind of go into the weeds with Cultivation's maybe-magic system. Come join us on this episode and maybe you'll grow some in your knowledge of Cultivation! Hah, get it? Okay, I'm done.

We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Grace (thegatorgirl) this time.

Skip to 25:51 to skip discussion on the reading.

And God Said, "Let there be Crem", and God saw the Crem, and perceived that it was good

I think it is interesting that Cultivation is trying to help the Nightwatcher (a spren) gain more understanding of humans not through a nahel bond, but by experience and interaction. A little trial and error. I wonder what the Nightwatcher would be like with a nahel bond. Or could she possibly gain the intelligence/understand that other nahel spren are gaining just by giving boons and curses.

I really liked Grace’s Puuli speculation. That actually really works for me. I always wonder what greater significance each of the interludes could have beyond worldbuilding and that one in particular is odd.

And one last thing I wanted to add because I’m not sure idea this was clarified in the discussion. Lift went to the Nightwatcher after Dalinar. She went 3ish years ago and he went 6 or so years ago. So it is possible for Cultivation to have been involved. But as of right now there isn’t enough evidence to know one way or the other.

I don't often theorize, but here we go! Y'all got me thinking. What if Cultivation has been cultivating her daughter the Nightwatcher to have a magical signature similar to her own? That way Odium wouldn't notice the difference between a typical boon/curse vs. real Cultivation intervention. She allows the Nightwatcher to do her thing specifically so that she can step in and plant the seeds she needs to bring down Odium. I also theorize that Dalinar, Taravangian, and Lift (and others as well) are all part of her plan to bring down Odium, but in such a way that Odium will overlook them until the crucial moment. That's pretty much how OB played out, he didn't pay attention to or notice Dalinar's personal growth until it was too late.

I feel like Cultivation access to magic would be through progress/growth over time like it is with her part of the KR access.

They swear ideals but not all at once, only once they have become ready to which is an internal growth issue.

From Honor’s perspective there is no reason not to agree to more than one ideal at a time. That’s not how codes of conduct or laws work, we don’t agree to follow one law and if it goes well then we can agree to obey more.

As you said that’s why she or her super-spren wouldn’t know how to or want to grant Lift’s wish to not change.

I think she has something to do with the gemhearts. Brandon said a one magic system is related to Fabrials and those seem to depend on gemhearts which are very nature based growing inside of living things and all.

He also counts The Old Magic as a magic system. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/219/#e7932
