It's a new year, and it's time for some new news. There's that A Memory of Light thing (you know the one), but we also have Steelheart and The Rithmatist coming out in 2013, and we have some exciting things for both projects.

First up, Steelheart, the superhero novel. Entertainment Weekly has revealed its cover, which you can see to the right. There is also a freaking awesome plot summary:

There are no heroes.

Every single person who manifested powers--we call them Epics--turned out to be evil.

Here, in the city once known as Chicago, an extraordinarily powerful Epic declared himself Emperor. Steelheart has the strength of ten men and can control the elements. It is said no bullet can harm him, no sword can split his skin, no explosion can burn him. He is invincible.

It has been ten years. We live our lives as best we can. Nobody fights back... nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans who spend their lives studying powerful Epics, finding their weaknesses, then assassinating them.

My name is David Charleston. I’m not one of the Reckoners, but I intend to join them. I have something they need. Something precious, something incredible. Not an object, but an experience. I know his secret.

I’ve seen Steelheart bleed.

Yeah, so okay, I don't know about you but now I'm ludicrously excited for Steelheart.

Next up, The Rithmatist. We've previously talked about how the Rithmatist is awesome, but now you can experience it for yourself, as Tor reveals the prologue and first chapter of the book. Just read that prologue and tell us you aren't stoked.

2013 is going to be an awesome year.

Rithmatist looks great.

The Wild Chalkling art at the end of the Prologue reminds me of zerglings! Maybe it's just because I saw Brandon call it "chalkboard Starcraft" in some interview somewhere and I can't get the comparison out of my head.

Wow, I can see some Real-time strategy games made from it. I am excited to read both of them.

I was hoping more for a day. I already knew it would be sometime in August.

Thanks though

Anyone know if this is another novella or if it is a full sized book?

This one I do know, it is a full-sized book, the first in a trilogy. Although being YA, I'd think it's probably a safe bet that it'll be shorter than Brandon's adult novels.

Nope, Brandon's got at least one chapter on his website, and Tor recently released one on their website as well. I think they're the same, but I haven't checked.

Very fascinating. Do we know the release date for this book? (Or is this in August, also?)

It kind of reminds me of Warbreaker, in that there are living things. Chalk with life, and Awakened stuff. Awakened living chalk.
