:-D I  played with several ways of making it work. 

It's 5 ropes of fondant.  One formed the circle.   Four short ones are arranged in an over then under pattern around the circle.   

If you play with play dough snakes, I think you will see how it's done.  But I'll look again and see if I have process photo.

I did too, a little.  But I've watched too many cake shows.   All the bakers say it's meant to be eaten.   

But that's why I took lots of pictures first. Makes it last forever.
