Question

Posted

I know this has been posted before but I didn't get a clear answer on how it worked in the thread that I read.

Chromium feruchemy is luck feruchemy. You store luck when you fill and gain luck when tapping

Question:

How in the world does it work! Is it cosmic luck that effects other people? For example you want to dodge a punch and the person accidentally steps on a stone and trips when trying to?

Or is it more personal luck, like you have an instinctive gut feeling as for where to move to get out of the punch's way.

Personally I'm leaning towards the second given that hoid uses it to instinctively know where to go (but not why he's there), but id like to know what everyone else thinks!

We know they're storing and tapping Fortune... whatever that means. We don't really understand the deal with Fortune all that well. So far, Fortune has only been seen onscreen for futuresight. Hoid's use of Fortune, which we haven't technically seen in action but have WoBs on, seems to be the closest analogue to Feruchemical chromium. He knows when & where important things are about to happen. So, it's probably not quite luck that they're using but probabilities, they probably get some innate sense of where & when important or good or bad things are about to happen to them. That would make them lucky while tapping, but I have no idea why that would make them unlucky while storing. Feruchemy is weird with what it considers balanced and equivalent exchange.

It's not luck it's Fortune.

In the Cosmere intuition is a way to know things you shouldn't

Basically gut feelings are completly true.

So you would store that, and then you can tap it latter to see the future.

so to be clear its the second for my analogy? if you tap fortune then your gut tells you where to dodge?

what happens if you tap an increased amount then? or a tiny amount? will it be a delay on the gut feeling or something like that? does the fortune know what you need the fortune for?

You will know what, but not why

feruchemy can be drawn out in ridiculous amounts though. what happens if you use a lot of fortune at once? or is that useless

alright thats fair. maybe tapping a ridiculous amount of fortune is silly then. maybe it gives you a better sense of whats going to happen. i know hoid has fortune thats what i based the second theory off of, so i guess that makes sense. thank you both!

Tapping large enough ammounts would more than likely break through and cause you to see into the spiirtual realm.

Which would have what effect? You get to see people's connections? Actually see the future? Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of atium in the long run?

In large enough amounts it would be like Atium+duralumin.

Atium would still have a use as it is still an increadibly useful tool in combat where f-chromium would be focused

okay thank you for your help! in summary
chromium feruchemy is fortune, not luck
chromium fortune will allow you to sense what is about ti happen or what will happen, but not why
fortune used in a large amount (multiple times tapping) will likely allow one to see into the spiritual realm and have access to almost shard like future sight
usually in the form of a gut feeling (unless you refer to the point directly above)

is this all correct?

As far as we know yes.

It's possible there are other uses but you're up to speed with the rest of us.

For reference, I'm very interested in how F-Chromium works and asked Brandon once at a signing. His answer was basically RAFO.

Quote

Weltall (paraphrased)

That gave me the opportunity to ask one last question, about Feruchemical chromium and whether storing fortune would cause you to risk experiencing really improbable things, like the entropy curse in The Dresden Files.

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

He said he wasn't going to answer questions about fortune, that the MAG shouldn't be taken as gospel on this point (I don't remember how it works there and didn't mention it, he brought it up on his own) and that he's planning something different than we might be thinking, for how that mechanic will function.

Arcanum Unbounded San Francisco signing (Nov. 30, 2016)

So yeah, while we have a bit more information about Fortune now than we did back then, we still don't know how this particular application of it will work except in broad generalities and that per Khriss in the Ars Arcanum, people tapping F-Chromium at least have the appearance of being 'lucky'..

What's fascinating is if you have a Chromium Twinborn, that basically gets you infinite Fortune which I imagine has lots of benefits.
