Stormborn90066 Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 So I got my girlfriend to finally start reading Branderson, she just finished Well of Ascension and has asked me, if they don't have colored plants, how do they dye/color their clothes? I cannot remember for the life of me the answer to that question! If anyone could give me an answer I'd be delighted, she loves the books but she thinks she's found a plot hole, I don't think it is but can't remember what the answer is. Thanks.
Spren of Kindness she/her Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 I guess it depends on what grows. Mineral dyes, yes. But obviously there aren't flowers, or berries, which is what you would make a lot of natural dyes from... They might come from further south? Or there's always roots, though again, depends on what grows.
Honorless he/him Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 (edited) Vin, as Valette Renoux, mentioned this: Quote ...live in Chakath, a city in the Western Dominance. Major export, wool. My family works in trading dyes, specifically blushdip red, from the snails that are common there, and callowfield yellow, made from tree bark. in the Final Empire, Ch 9 Edited September 19, 2021 by Honorless 4
StanLemon Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 Also, in Ch 5 of The Final Empire, though easy to forget, there is mention of colored plants Quote Though it was dark, Kelsier knew that the plants would all be of slightly different colors than the typical brown-some would be white, others ruddy, and perhaps even a few light yellow. Plant that weren't brown were a rarity cultivated and kept by the nobility So while it seems like there wouldn't be a lot of vibrant plants, they might have some that produce a nice dye. Like Dyer's Woad for example, a yellow flower that produces a strong blue dye.
