"Wendy..." said Nico through gritted teeth. "It ain't nothing, 'ear? I'm fine, I am."

"Did Allivia do that to you?" Wendy pushed herself into an upright position despite the pain.

"And if she did?" Nico asked.

"I'd knock her upside the head with a big wooden stick!"

"Well, she didna do it, miss." Nico bit his lip, preparing to lie. "'Livia said she'd kill you if we saw each other again. An' I knew you was in medical bay so the only way I was gonna be seein' you was if I..." He nodded at his bloody arm.

Wendy went pale. "You..."

He nodded. "Sorry. I's... just glad I gets to see ya."

"You'd better hope you don't die, Kimby, because I'm gonna kill you."

Nicolae blushed, smiling nervously. "You wouldna kill a wounded man."

"Get over here."

"That an order, miss?" He looked up at the nurse for permission to obey Wendy.

The doctor tied off the hospital-grade bandage and stepped away, letting out an exasperated sigh.

"Yes. It is." Wendy crossed her arms.

Nico wandered over to Wendy and knelt down next to her bed. "I get hit a lot, so go ahead."

Wendy grabbed Nico in a big hug and pulled him close.

After bracing himself, Nico felt her arms around him. Tension immediately dissipated and he took a shaky breath, climbing up onto the bed next to her so he could hug her back properly. "Thank you," he whispered.

"Please, Nico... you're worth more than that."

With a sniff he started crying and cursed himself for doing so. Today had been a hard day. "Stars curse it," he swore, trying desperately to wipe his eyes.

Wendy held his arms to his side, holding Nico in a firm embrace. Her head was pressed into his shoulder; mostly because she wasn't tall enough to put it anywhere else.

"Aww, damn it to Mal, Wendy, gimme the decency of hidin' my tears a' least. I's not supposed to cry, it's embarassin'."

Nicolae fell asleep on her shoulder.
