Tenth of the Dusk had left the devastation of Shadesmar behind, on the trail of the elusive Alethi lighteyed man known as Kaddar. Roshar, according to what Tenth knew, had been Kaddar's homeworld, but taking on the guise of a lighteyed soldier and infiltrating Highprince Dalinar's warcamp had not brought answers. Clues as to who Kaddar was, what he was doing. Where he was going. Being a bounty hunter was an art, in the way Forgery was. You had to understand your quarry's history, their roots, to grasp their motivations. Wounded animals fled to somewhere safe. Skewhounds retreated to their dens to lick their wounds. You learned about your rivals, in the Pantheon. About the various creatures on your island, their moods, their habits. Tenth had hunted a criminal once, on Scadrial, and had found him in the ruins of his childhood home. Home. It had a strange effect on the mind. But all Tenth gleaned on Roshar had been little, scraps. Kaddar may as well have been a ghost. A grizzled spearman among the darkeyes mentioned off-handedly that Kaddar had dealings with the Ghostbloods previously. That itself stood to reason, Tenth supposed. You didn't come to the Ghostbloods notice one way or another, without having been drawn into their web of schemes. Another remembered that Highprince Dalinar had a Wit, once, a one-eyed spearman with a sharp tongue and two chickens. (A Rosharan limitation, Tenth thought.) A fondness for riddles, said another. An old sergeant recalled that the Wit had fought on the battle-lines, had held at the spear-clash with the others, had found the other highprinces' spies. "The Reunification War," said a brightness, in the colours of another highprince. "He was great, then." Greatness, thought Tenth, and shrugged. Dalinar had a reputation. The once-Wit had left, and no one seemed to know why. Kaddar, by repute, was a renowned meddler, and yet Tenth had not found him at all. Not in this game of shards and conspiracies and Odium's agents. The others came. Eight had come to Roshar, and Tenth found himself juggling both the issue of Kaddar and of Odium and his champions. Eight had come to Roshar, and seven had left. (Or were supposed to leave: Ruin remained, and so did two. Ruin remained on the stricken, doomed world.) A small price to pay for salvation, Tenth thought, but he wasn't sure he believed it. He shouldered his trapper's backpack and continued on his way.
