Talnic looked up at Cara, head tilted slightly to one side. "Well, I'm talking to you it seems," he said. He then nodded towards the rest of the group. "And listening to them."

"True, true, I do have a question, though. Why follow a prophecy and chase after a dragon? And how on earth did you get all of these people to go with you?"

"I need to follow the prophecy," Talnic said slowly. "I've tried to ignore them in the past, but it's never gone well for me or any of those around me... As for why these people are here... I suspect each of them has their own motivations."

He didn't mention the fact that his most recent prophecy had felt different from any of his others. It had attracted far more people, for one, and when his ring had burned... Mind wandering, Talnic lifted his hand from his sword and began absently twisting his ring around his finger. After it had flared with heat, he hadn't been able to sense the people around him as well as he had been before. The missing strength hadn't returned in the past few hours, and Talnic didn't believe that it would.

And that worried him.

“Interesting. Wait... we? Do you share with someone else?”

I wasn’t sure if Gal would have told Ara about the Wanderers as a group, yet, so erred on the side of caution.

"How often do you follow prophecies? And where do they come from?"

Talnic shrugged. "They just happen. They almost always have. The time in between them can be anywhere from a week to several years. I... Don't know as much about them as I'd like to." Talnic grimaced. "It adds an element of unpredictability to my already unpredictable life."

"Hm? Oh, right. This is a hereditary magic system. I'm talking about my family. So, you'll try first Harvesting me. Just please, do not take memory or knowledge, if you can. You said you need physical contact?"

“Yeah.” Ara holds out her hand. “And I would never take your Recollection. I’m actually pretty bad at this, so I don’t know if I even could. I’ll start by just taking some of your own personal Emotion. Maybe later, if you’re okay with it, I could try to take a tiny bit of  the harvest you’ve stored.”

Exodus stood by, casually eavesdropping on the conversation. He was a little curious as to the exchange, and wanted to know a bit more, but suddenly a young man walked up to him, the girl, and the Wanderer, staring.

"And... who are you again?" the young man asked Exodus, ignoring the other two.

"I am called Xeus," said Exodus, "And you are?"

"Orpheus," the kid replied, and Exodus stiffened. According to Alaxis, this dark-skinned kid was the one with the Contract to Zanidar. He had almost forgotten that. Exodus laughed to himself silently at his brilliance of temporarily abandoning Alaxis. With the disguise, even Zanidar couldn't recognize him!

Exodus was about to respond when Orpheus ignored him and turned to the other two. "Physical contact? Are you two..." he trailed off, thinking, then smiled. "Oh, sorry, I'll leave you two together, then. Xeus, you should probably stop eavesdropping, too. You're not a creep, are you?"

And he marched off.

Gal took the girl's hand and breathed deeply.

"All right, I'm ready."

He ignored Orpheus and... Xeus, the man said he was called? Though he did note the name.

I think Ara would fail, due to the nature of Wanderers. Their minds are grown in weird ways, which is why they are unHarvestable.

BTW, I assumed Gal still doesn't know Ara's name, since he's bad at social interaction and almost never asks for people's names, though he takes notice when they are mentioned. And by "ignored" I meant "heard, noted, and didn't reply".

And is Orpheus thinking what I think he's thinking? This is just an experiment.

Ara reached for Gal’s emotions. She could see them, churning around in the void that was his mind, but whenever she tried to reach for them they pulled back, out of her reach. She opened her eyes. “I don’t think it’s going to work. Do you want to try and harvest me, now?”

Gal nodded. "I can't Harvest emotions," he said, "I'm mostly Harvesting knowledge, thoughts and memories. I can Harvest consideration, though." He hesitated. "I'll see if I can Harvest a small amount, and I'll Plant it back in afterwards. Please, try not to resist too much." He concentrated, reaching toward the girl's mind and tried to Harvest a small amount of Consideration.

To his surprise, it worked. He told the girl that while Planting it back in.

"It seems that the ability of Harvest is blocked by the patient, not the user, in my magic system. Fascinating." He proceeded to write some notes in two of his notebooks - one in the Common Tongue, one in his native language.

I assumed it'll work for him. I think it makes sense.

Is Exodus still around? If so, he might be able to read the Owlsons' language, with all his knowledge.

Avren slid a book from the library shelf and flipped through it. Plant Care for Dummies would hopefully help him keep the plant alive. He headed to the exit, passing Ara and Owlson chatting about magic, swamped by his thoughts.

...Which was why he didn’t notice when he walked right into Xeus.

Exodus turned, annoyed, but found the kid who was responsible for the scar in his neck. He immediately brought his hand up to it out of reflex, but causally recovered. Maybe he hadn't noticed.

"Watch where you're going," he said smoothly, "...and what was your name?"

"Avren..." he mused, then glanced down at the book he had. "And what book is that?"

“Er, it’s about plant care.” His fingers rapped along the spine.

Plant care? "Ah..." said Exodus, "Plants. Of course. You must have a plant. And... why have you joined this quest?"

Oh dear. Now he's got Avren wondering the important question, why is he here?

Exodus nodded. He had begun to realize now that not a single one of these adventurers knew what they were doing or specifically where they were going.

That made them much less of a threat.

"You don't know, do you?" he said, "That's fine, Avren, neither do they. These people seem nice, but your leader does not know what he is doing or getting into."

He paused.

"I do. And I'm afraid I can't stay with this group too much longer. If you seek a true hero's quest, you would be welcome to come."

"You're hunting a dragon, for one thing, but the nature of the prophecy is much greater than that. The fate of the realms hangs on it. Yes, this group is talented, I have tested that myself. But none possess the virtues... the heroism that is needed."

So he was recruiting. But why would Xeus choose him?

“The realms?” Avren frowned. “Though you’re talking to the wrong person, if you want heroism.”
