"If only it were that simple," said X's avatar. "But you can't simply walk into this portal and emerge a day in the past. I mean, it's a possibility- but you might also end up at any other day in the portal's existence."

"By the time of the area, about a hundred years. But it might exist for many more millennia yet."

"So it can send us into the future as well?"

X's avatar nodded. "Both ends of the portal were in the same spatial location, forming a sort of time tube."

"Huh. So if we go in there... there's no telling where we'll come out."

X's avatar nodded again. "If the rumors are true, you might even end up in the Eternity Before," he said.

"The Eternity Before," repeated X's avatar. "A time a literal eternity ago. I've heard that a portal was opened up at some point in the time tube for just an instant that would take you back. Should you happen to fall through... you'd be stuck in the past forever."

Ellis worked his jaw. "What other choice do we have?"

"Other than jump in randomly? Ask Fate. He's the one that guards the timeline."

"Okay. Where do we find him?"

"You don't really find him. He finds you."

"How do we get him to find us?"

[xinoehp512 he/him]

"Well," said X's avatar, "I could summon him."

"You can?"

[xinoehp512 he/him]

"Fate is my Author. It is my right." X's avatar shivered. "One could call it."

"So... could you? Please?"

"I could," said X's avatar. "But I won't do it lightly."
