"But do we have to stay here?"

"I think we do if we're going to help Gerald. And maybe... maybe we could help you get out, X? If you want to?"

"Could we get one for Ellis?"

X's avatar blinked. "You could talk to Fate, I suppose... but you shouldn't unless you need to."

X's avatar sighed wistfully. "If only that were possible. When you leave for the portal, you will have to leave me behind again."

"Oh. Okay. Isn't there any way for you to leave?"

"We understand," Ellis said hastily. "Can you still help us?"

"Of course. The help I can give will be mostly in the form of information, however."

"Can you come with us into the past? I want to spend as much time together as possible."

X's avatar smiled sadly. "I would love that," he said, "but-"

He held off as a thought struck him. "Unless..." he muttered. "A conjunction? If anywhere, there would be the place..."

"Would you mind not muttering? All your cryptic secrets make things more confusing."

"What's a conjunction? Will it work?"

X's avatar shook his head. "Sorry, just thinking to myself. See, the portal isn't in TLT, but it almost is. When it was created... wait, I should explain the Bifurcation first. So. Shard of Thought. A Narrator unlike any other, willing to break the Fourth Wall and all that. Things happened- she made friends, enemies, and enemies that became friends - but eventually, the decision was made that such a being could not be allowed to exist. And so, she was erased from reality."

"Well that probably sucked."

X's avatar nodded. "A group of Narrators agreed with that assessment and sought to restore her to existence. However, things... didn't exactly go as planned."

"They reached back in time, fusing Shard of Thought (nicknamed Star)'s timeline to their own, restoring her and everything that happened in her timeline. And one of the things that had happened in her timeline was a great battle with the forces of the Void in which one of the Narrators that had become part of Star's group lost everything. Unwilling to lose it all again, he resisted the reunion. And, well... it worked. The universes split, and the group was cast into another reality."

Ellis blinked, nodding. "Okay."

"His name was Xinoehp," continued X's avatar, "though everyone called him Xino. After the split, there were two of him- one continued going by his true name, the other adopted the nickname. But that's not important. What is important is the sword, an artifact unique to the fallen twin, which had the power to burn through space- and time."

"Space and time? A sword that can do that?"

"That, and much more. This was the weapon of a Narrator, after all."

"No, no. The sword is out of your reach. What isn't is the portal Xino made with the sword, trying to track down a lost friend. Kind of like you are, in fact." X's avatar gestured to the portal projected by the arm. "The portal went back one day in time, and it was never destroyed."
