Hey everyone, I'm new to the community. I'm a huge fan of the stormlight archive series and I decided that I wanted to try and make a short film about some of the iconic scenes in the book in my opinion. I'll start by making 3d models of the characters and I'll even make them 3d printer friendly so if you have access to a 3d printer you could print yourself a mini figurine. I'll update my progress here as frequently as I can.

Welcome! It’s cool that you’re able to make 3D models, I don’t think I ever could.

Cool. Is Stormlight the only thing you've read?

no. I've also read the mistborn series, the alloy of law, the reckoners series, skyward and elantris. The stormlight archives are my favorite by far though skyward does come in at a close second.

YAY! Someone else who animates! Right now I'm working on a about 1-2 min scene from the prelude of the Way of Kings. Also, Welcome to the Shard!

some of the most iconic  scenes in my opinion are:

When Kaladin beats the Shardbearer in defense of Amaram (Undeniably one of the most powerful scenes in my opinion)

When Adolin's blade whispered her (his?) name to him (seemed like a prelude to something big in my opinion)

When Syl saves Kaladin from the edge of desperation at the Honor Chasm. Her innocence to the severity of the situation made for amazing contrast

As for how I got interested in this field, it happened gradually. When I was in high school, I enrolled in a new media arts option. It was my first time experimenting with expressing art through a digital media. Though I really liked art, I was never a very good artist myself. This option gave me tools to express myself in ways I could never do before. I may not be a great artist still, but I get to have results that I can actually be proud of (unlike the results of my sketches). Then I got introduced to blender. Blender is a free open source 3d modeling software that can do pretty much anything. After following some of the tutorials on youtube, I got hooked, and blender became my primary hobby besides my study. Then, I got into 3d printing through university. I'm an engineering student at my university and as part of the hands-on learning experience, we got access to the 3d printers. Again, playing around with them, I enjoyed it a lot and made it into another hobby of mine. Due to covid, I can't access the 3d printers anymore but I'm hoping they'll be reopened soon.

Finally, for my first Stormlight archive project, I'll be doing some of the iconic Sharblades in the story (such as Elhokar's, Dalinar's and Gavilar's). I know I said I'll do characters but I decided to start off with the blades as they're easier to make into 3d models, then I'll get into characters.

Hello! I'm also a creative type, technical animator here.

If you make some decent character models I'd be happy to rig it something up. I make game rigs professionally in Maya, but I've been itching to learn more blender and blender script. It would be awesome to have some fan projects to add to my portfolio of passion pieces.

My favorite cosmere character is a tossup between MeLaan or Vasher.

What character would you be interested in sculpting?

My top ones I'd like to create would be Kaladin and Dalinar. Vasher would also be one of my favorites. for the moment, I'm just designing some shardblades as they are easier and then I'll start on the characters. it might be a couple months before I upload my first character. Also, it would definitely be great if you could rig them. Though I've got some experience animating, your work as a professional would definitely be much better than mine. In case you want to play around with any of the models, I will be uploading the blend files here as well so that they would be made available for everyone.

Oooh yes those ones did give me tinglies when I was reading those would be sick to animate! Yeah most definitely do update us this'll be super cool. And blades first makes total sense yeee cool, cool! Could the 3d printed character even hold their own blades???

And wow that's actually awesome. It's super cool that it allowed you to sort of fulfill that artistic direction in a way that was easier for you to work with. Honestly, digital media classes in school are soooo helpful for just building like basic skills for like photo editing, graphic design, filmmaking, and animation. Just being able to come up with an idea and have some sort of a means to accomplish it is really amazing and it takes away a lot of the mystique or "Oh I'll never be able to do that" about a lot of these things. And once you have just like the basic skills you find a use appears for it more often than you think and as you do more complex things you learn more and more to be able to do even more complex things and so on lol.

Yesss YouTube tutorials and random tech software are like peanut butter and jelly it's just the perfect combo :D. And that's cool about Blender I've heard great things about it but never have actually started using it (yet...). And dang then 3d printing at Uni man you're getting the full tour here. That's really cool they give you access to it so you can learn on your own and yes, hope they get reopened soon (but only if its safe!!).

I do 3d. I started out with blender, and am best with that. I am currently learning nuke and maya right now though.
