Well, see, that's part of the problem. Here is actual footage of his reaction after i explained how a joke he made was actually harmful (spoilered for size):

He just takes everything as a joke, and honestly he's a crappy friend and we fight a lot and i wish i never came out to him, but we're kinda stuck together (not gonna share many details cause privacy) and i really wanted to be myself around him. But now he makes a lot of harmful and rude jokes and takes every opportunity to ("jokingly" of course) explain how stupid the lqbtq+ community (and a whole lot of other hurtful stuff that makes me want to absolutely murder him but i'm not gonna expand cause it would turn into a vent session). The one time i made a potentially harmful joke about something he cared about, it was completely on accident, and after he pointed it out i apologized profusely and righted myself, and i just wish he could put a quarter of the effort into our relationship that i put because both our lives would be so much easier that way, but nooooo, he has to be stupid and take everything as a joke and not leave me alone.

Sorryyyy, that turned into a vent session even though i tried to veer it away from that course :(

Anyway, i've tried explaining it to him, doesn't work. Is there anything else i can try?

Okay so this is a person who pretends to be an ally but isn't even actually trying to be. It sounds like he's using "joking" as a way to express his actual opinions but then tries to make you feel like you're the wrong one by being like "I'm just joking don't be so sensitive"

In short, I don't think there's anything else besides explaining that could help. If he has good intentions, then explaining it to him should make a difference, not make him respond "Even when I'm supportive. Smh."

Yeah so they're not actually trying. I agree with @DramaQueen, unfortunately, there's not much else you can do. If he doesn't want to learn, you can't really force-teach him. :(

And if there's a place you can vent and rant about the difficulties of relationships when you're LGBTQ+;and get the support you need, it's definitetly here. Don't apologize for that. It's very hard when someone you're stuck with is purposefully derogatory, and I'm sorry you can't just walk away from the relationship. The one thing left for you to do, I feel like, is just to write this person off and stop putting efforts in the relationship. To be polite and civil and don't engage with them any more than strictly necessary. At least that way you'd be preserving yourself and sparing yourself a lot of grief. I know it's easier said than done, but it's all I've got.

It will be better in the long run @Szeth's Facepalm. I have had to keep it from people and it is not fun. And the people like that are not the easiest to be around.

I am so glad that I found this thread.

I only get to talk about my sexuality with very few friends. And my parents hate the LGBTQ+ Community.

I am bisexual.

Gosh, I'm so sorry about all y'all's parents. My parents are... well. They are semi-okay with it. I wish I got to talk with them about my queer characters (of which there are many), but I can't and that hurts. To not even be able to tell them that I'm who I am would hurt even more. I'm just so glad that we're all able to talk about it together though; being able to feel accepted is so, so, so important, especially for kids, which most of us are.

It's hard when you feel you can't be yourself with those closest to you, but family can surprise you sometimes—even when they're slightly homophobic. Both of my parents are, but when I was exploring my gender and came out them, my dad took me to a men's clothing store for my birthday and told me to go wild (I'm AFAB).

I'm not telling you guys to come out, because it's definitely not my place and whether you want to or not is between you and yourself, and only you can know if it's even a possibility. I'm just sharing my story for those of you who do want to come out but are still afraid. It might go better than you think.

Also, @Szeth's Facepalm I'm out of upvotes for now, but your terrible pun is amazing and made me snort.

@Zephrun's Imperium You can talk about your queer characters here!

My dad is just downright homophobic, and he is vocal about it if he wants to be. I honestly don't get how parents are mad if their kids don't share their ideas and values. Like, were they expecting us to be little robots that copy everything they say and do? It is very confusing to me.

Anyway, coming out would be nice, but i don't think my parents deserve it. They created an environment where i feel like coming out is a huge risk, which wouldn't have been a problem if all their children were cis-het, but i'm not, so they kinda messed up there. And i don't think they deserve to share this journey with me at the moment.

A very valid sentiment.

Also I just noticed your signature is super gay and I love it.

I saw your drawing of them smooching and it was adorable.

What's the relationship between Sierra and Tamika?

Your anatomy and posing is particularly good, especially Sierra! They all have so much personality and dynamism.

Im sorry that you cant share parts of yourself with your parents. Its terribly hurtful and unfair. The cool thing is that you can choose your friends, especially once youre an adult and you can find IRL people who are like you. I wish I had some grand wise thing to say, just, know that youre not alone and it wont be like this forever. That goes for all of you who are teens. It gets so much better when you become an adult and can direct your own life.
