GoWibble he/him Posted October 5, 2019 Posted October 5, 2019 Why on Scadrial, and in the general cosmere, is the number 16 predominant, and on Roshar, the number 10. Don't the Shards tend to keep to the specific number of 16? 2
1 Argent he/him Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 I feel like over the year we've fixated a little too much on "Shardic numbers" when I am not sure they are anything other than symbolic. The real reason 16 is a big deal is because Brandon liked how divisible it was. Some Shards have colors and numbers that are important to them, but most don't. I don't think it's a useful thing to think about; not much at least. 1
0 +Invocation Posted October 5, 2019 Posted October 5, 2019 Shenanigans. There's something about Honor that makes 10 significant for that particular Shard like 16 is.
0 GoWibble he/him Posted October 6, 2019 Author Posted October 6, 2019 Ok, so sure, but Honor is dead now, does that complicate things at all?
0 Chiberty Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 Argent Back in, I think, Words of Radiance I asked you-- Somebody asked the question that had to do with the number 10 on Roshar and I didn't get the question on the recording--which was horrible--but your answer talked about Honor's purposes. Is what you said, and you mentioned 10 of them and that is why the number 10 is so sacred. Could you say something so I have something on the record? So we know what you said about that? Brandon Sanderson Honor's purposes... Argent Or Shard's purposes... Like what is that all about? Brandon Sanderson That will become-- I said it vaguely on purpose. Firefight Chicago signing (Feb. 20, 2015) Argent Back in ['14] you referred to Honor's Purposes to me at one point. Is that still a thing in the cosmere? Brandon Sanderson Honor's purpose? Argent Honor's purposes. You referred to ten of them. Using the concept of Shardic numbers. But I don't have that on record, I don't know anything about it, it's been a confusing topic ever since. Brandon Sanderson So that's still a deal. It just plays into the ten names of the Almighty and the ten attributes of the Fools and the ten attributes of the Almighty. Argent Are Purposes something every shard has? Brandon Sanderson I wouldn't say-- No. It's playing more into the nature of Honor itself. JordanCon 2018 (April 22, 2018) 2
0 Wander89 he/him Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 Ah, the numbers. Maybe if you put them all together it will be like Lost.
