Secret History question. Spanky!

Hakedohn

Question

Do we know anything about Spanky?  Hoid used a spirit-corpse that he rides in the Cognitive Realm and we know that spanky is not a bastard. Anything else? What is he, why is he able to be used as a raft? just so much there I would like to understand

Not much to know about poor Spanky.

Questioner

Why did Hoid in Secret History have to ride on another person to get to the Well, when that person could float on--

Brandon Sanderson

Sooo, what he's floating on is a Cognitive Shadow. It's a spirit, it's not an actual person. He is floating on someone who is--

Questioner

Do we know them?

Brandon Sanderson

You did not know them, don't worry about them. But see, he's using that as a boat because it's easy to sink through the mist. And if you notice, he has to coat his oar with Investiture in order to move him. So yeah, he's floating on a person's soul... It was so much easier with the Pits, but that's because there were boats and things.

"There were boats and things" in the CR leading to the Pits of Hathsin??

I know the Pits were supposed to be the main access point for worldhopping trade, but that seems rather incredible that one of the Lord Ruler's Biggest Secrets, the source of atium and where most of the mined stuff actually went, such that it was a one-way death sentence for prisoner with only very trusted obligators working there, never Inquisitors... Would also not draw his attention for off-world people arriving via the Pits.

I have to say that I find the concept of clandestine worldhopping trade routes enabling a "hidden economy" and even a "Cosmere postal service of sorts" counterintuitive to how people actually behaved in the real world with respect to trade routes, which is to say, they would not really be kept secret for hundreds of years. Something from off-world gets noticed and/or popular, demand increases, and there will be someone looking to profit by supplying it... Before you know it, there would be chouta stands in Luthadel and a Coinshot/Pewterarm mercenary squad working for Breaths on Nalthis to help the Pahn Kahl Rebellion.

It would make sense if the only worldhoppers were part of some tightly controlled group of People In The Know, like the Ghostbloods or the 17th Shard, but Brandon has mentioned that a lot of worldhoppers are just ordinary people and that Nalthis even has a kind of "customs border" in the CR, and in Oathbringer it seems like it's pretty routine for the spren to see humans around.
