Uncomfortably she had to fight hard to suppress the urge to turn around and flee when he stared at her like that. Years of practice made it easy to keep her mask, to control her face and her eyes, but they didn't change a lot about the way she felt beneath it. It had been a while since she wished for her sunglasses to hide her eyes, but here in this place she suddenly itched to get it out of her pocket and slip it on. People had stopped staring that openly once she'd been part of the Council and later the Triarchy. Most only whispered behind her back. Instead she forced herself to meet his eyes cooly, look into them with her own. Let him stare. Let them all stare, laugh at her because of her appearance. She was who she was. And there was at least one person, that thought her beautiful.

"I'm an Elsecaller." she replied her voice carefully controlled as well, leaving away her ideal. Let him figure it out on his own. "So I keep around a spren, to use your expression." She lifted a hand and gently touched the little spren on her shoulder. Brashen looked at Adren, and she could only imagine, that he wasn't too amused by the conversation. He'd started to mistrust strangers, almost feared them.

Wes kept up the eye contact, then slightly nodded, tapping his pencil against the chair he sat on. It didn’t really matter who else knew, he supposed, just that people had been saved. And the people who really mattered anyway would know. It was a point Wes deeply wanted to concede to the girl, but deep inside he didn’t find it a satisfying conclusion to his problem.

Why? He thought. I’m not like those politicians, who want to be popular and on the news. I’m not selfish, or narcissistic, am I?

But still, the treacherous thought that he wanted to be noticed, for others to know what he did still lurked around, like a spren keeping to the shadowy places of his mind. Was it bad to want recognition?

Sarah looked at her. "I don't think so. I mean, I couldn't tell that you were isolated or anything."

"ACE is a private enterprise," she continued, "so unless they specifically got a permit from the government the caverns are accessible by everyone. Of course, going in without a team is still stupid, way to many dangers down there, and if you'd get hurt or lost nobody would be able to find you before you die."

"But even if it was illegal I wouldn't worry if I were you," she added with a laugh. "The city government isn't what I'd call an effective administration. Sure, they can take care of basic city management, but aside from that they don't have that much influence. I doubt they could actually manage to pass a law like that, especially if one of the guilds gets interested in investigating. Besides, the only reason to outlaw access to the caverns would be if it was dangerous, in which case no sane law-enforcement agency is going to sent their people down there to chase convicts."

Sarah turned at this. "Really?" She asked. "Huh. Well, I don't want to die in my first month here either." She extended a hand to the woman who had spoken. "I'm Sarah. What's your name?"

Sarah smiled. "Yeah, I got here a few weeks ago. To be honest, I know next to nothing about this place. Some woman in a library filled me in on the basics, but I've just been winging it so far."

Karin shrugged. "Everyone here does to some extent," she said. "Even the people who live in this world don't know everything about it. Case in point, caverns with mysterious cave-paintings in a world too young to have prehistoric civilizations. Honestly, sometimes I wonder if even the people who created this world know everything about it."

"Ah, right, you wouldn't know about that," Karin said in an apologetic tone. "Essentially, this world was created by a group called the Dark Alley. Basically a bunch of extremely skilled - and somewhat insane - scientists. They used a form of magic that can steal aspects of people from their soul, used this to somehow take the stability of an empty universe, and then used it to stabilize a new universe."

She shrugged. "I have to admit I'm a bit fuzzy on the details," she said. "The group themselves now lives inside a different world, called the Alleys. It's somewhat of a strange place, basically an endless maze of alleys, with every alley in every world connecting to it. It's why most people tend to stay outside of alleys. Entering them can easily take you into the Alleys proper, which is extremely dangerous for people who aren't members, and not just because of the people who live there either. The place itself seems to be alive, and it can restructure itself any way it likes, and it doesn't seem to like intruders. And this is ignoring all the experiments and eldritch abominations walking around, or the fact that certain alleys are deathtraps that can be on fire, or filled with poison gas, or even just plain unmaking everything that enters, dumping them into the Void and destroying them."

A Rithmatist. Thanks to the last few days she’d spent frantically asking questions and soaking up everything she possibly could, Myriad knew what that was. “An artist,” she noted, continuing to hold out her hand. “I didn’t think Rithmatists had ways to go invisible.”
