Rayse as the Big Bad

Weird idea, but there's a WoB that says Rayse and Hoid were friends. If Hoid is the endgame protagonist, it would be poignant, maybe, for a friend of his as such to be the endgame antagonist?

Also, can't remember if a Vessel can survive a deSharding, but what if they can, Rayse is SA-defeated by losing Odium, so it's not as Odium that he is the threat later? Or if Vessels die without a Shard, maybe the twist is that Rayse has Odium replaced. So, like, he is made to relinquish Odium but take up a reforged Honor...

I doubt Rayse is going to be the final big bad. That would mean that Stormlight ends without him/Odium being dealt with, which doesn't sound very fulfilling to me.

What if it was like when Lord Foul was defeated at the end of the first/second Covenant trilogy? Or like, he gets expelled from Roshar and can't come back, but he can still regenerate or what, maybe? And fight elsewhere?

I like where you're going...but agree with RShara on the likely ending of the SA. But what if Bavadin (i.e., Autonomy) is the real "Big Bad"? Letting Rayse fight her battles for her while laying the groundwork to take over the Cosmere?

It'd still be a weird ending to Brandon's opus to let Rayse get away like that.

Yeah, given his surprisingly early introduction and the amount of appearances we get from Rayse in OB I would not be shocked if he died at the end of book 5.

I expect we will get a lot of him in Book 4. He won’t visit Dalinar anymore but he may still talk to Venli and Mr. T and it’s Venli’s book.

Im not sure he can be the big bad for 7 more novels if he is all over them this early.

I don’t know what the back 5 will be about if he does die in book 5 though.

I’m holding out for an unmet Shard being the big threat after Stormlight. Or a Hoid heel turn.

Idk I think Sanderson has grounds for developing Rayse to a great degree. To make a deep character out of him and not just "the guy who killed Shards before, had the most terrible Shard, who was then defeated" with some minor sentimental background.

I guess I'm not expecting a twist antagonist in SA, firstly. Otoh the storm stuff makes me wonder if there is an allegory about climate change somewhere in SA, so maybe it would be a disaster-response epic after 5, with 1 through 5 being the war story of SA.

Yeah @Thanatos here it is:

RAFOed I'm sure, but you said you are planing 2 arcs of 5 books each in Stormlight Archive. Having read all of your published works (and some unpublished:)) I know your storytelling pace is astronomicaly quick. I'm positive you will end current desolation story in the first 5 books, since as I understod, other 5 books will be set in near future in SA universe. So I guess my question is; can you drop any hint will Odium survive to see 6th SA book:)?

Brandon Sanderson

Oh, Odium will survive. Now, whether the one HOLDING that power will survive...that's a different question. :) (Not quite a RAFO.)

...

Here's an interesting WoB:

Quote

Kogiopsis (paraphrased)

Given that we now know that Odium can 'make it possible' for people to use magic that draws on him on other planets, has he done this anywhere besides Roshar?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

Odium has been active on all other planets, including several we haven't seen yet.

EDIT:

IDK if this confirms Roshar-system confinement vs. Braize confinement in particular:

For the second letter, Rayse is captured and cannot leave the system he inhabits, Roshar. Is the fact that Odium can't leave Roshar a direct result of the Oathpact, or something else?

Brandon Sanderson

Not a direct result of the Oathpact, but the Oathpact was part of it.

Or:

Did Odium Splinter all the Shards for the same reason?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

No. Some Shards he Splintered because he feared the Shard itself, and some Shards he targeted because he feared the Vessel. He was working his way down his list in order of the Shards and Vessels he felt would be most dangerous to his plans until he got stuck on Roshar.

Unrelated but I also found:

Leras mentioned something like Cephandrius had the choice/chance to take up a shard but declined. So was the shattering an event that was predicted to happen so that people like Leras, Ati, Rayse, etc to be present at that time to pick up the shards after the shattering.

Brandon Sanderson

There's more to it than that, but some of what you say is close.

Hasn't Brandon confirmed Odium will survive Stormlight Archives, but Rafo'd if Rayce would survive.

I think that is an answer that doesn't say as much as it seems, though. I mean, even Ruin isn't gone, as such, just now part of a greater whole. Investiture can't really be destroyed, so Odium's power has to survive in some form, doesn't it?

Yeah, that's my take on it. Even if Odium is Splintered, the power would remain, so that WoB doesn't really say anything :D
