+King of Herdaz he/him Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 Whose thoughts count in shaping the cognitive realm? Is it just humans and humanoids? or do animals (and especially more intelligent animals like aviar and ryshadium) count too?

I think animals would count as well, however animals don't think about the big picture and would have a limited impact. The smarter a being is, the bigger impact they have. (Smarter might be the wrong word) the ones who spend more time contimplating the world.

Things in Shadesmar are shaped by thought, so it hard to shape it if you don't invest thought into it. So it's not "only these" or "only those", but everyone does their part, some more, some others. And logically, the part is bigger if the amount of thought is larger. 3

Also not only scholars think about their environment on a regular bases. Even normal humans read maps for example.
StanLemon Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 Investiture is attracted to sentience. I think the more sentient something is the stronger it's impact is on the Cognitive. On top of that I think that the general subconscious worldview that is shared is what controls the shape of the Cognitive as well. This I think is why the Cognitive is flat, because people don't think about the world as round even most people here on Earth don't properly view it as round even if they understand that the world is round. Additionally, things on land often are viewed as many separate distinct things even if they are part of a larger whole. For example, a forest is still seen as many trees because we can actually properly perceive the pieces making it up. In contrast, bodies of water are almost always considered one homogeneous whole, a lake, a river, an ocean, etc. That I think is why they are solid in the Cognitive. And lastly I think that's why travel is so short in the Cognitive is because people are notoriously bad at understanding the distances of space. Because humans and other fully sapient beings int the Cosmere are actually aware of the world around them and make mental connections and views about the world around them compared to say a stick which is more focused on it's own existence rather than the world around it. 4
