"The drink causes you more pain," Ember said. "Even I understand that." Ember looked at the floor. Star would better know how to help her.

Master, please come and help me. We need your help. Please.

But there was no answer.

She will not listen to me, Ember thought. I need Star. I can do no more for her. Oh, why did Master think I was capable of this?

With that, Ember began to sprint. Ember was capable of running far faster than any human. She did not tire and her metal legs could resist far more strain than muscle. Hated or not, Ember still cared deeply for Heather and did not intend to let her ruin herself. But she was not so arrogant as to think that she was capable of emotional support. TVG should have chosen someone else. Someone more fit to serve Star. Tears evaporating on her glass eyes, Ember followed her master's signature.

Heather sat in her room, and began to utterly destroy it while sobbing. “WHY?” She screamed over and over. Eventually she sat in front of the bathroom mirror, looking quite insane. Her hair was everywhere and she was breathing hard. She let out another scream and punched the mirror so hard it shattered. Heather grabbed a jagged piece, blood spurting from her hand, and she began to try and dig the protruding spikes from her chest.

A few hours later, Heather was curled up in the bathtub with the shower on. She thought it best if she tried to clean the blood off her white tank top, but more just kept coming. She had also tried to get the metal plate off back with the broken piece of glass, but that did not work. So she sat their in her own blood, with the shower head spraying down ice cold water on her. Heather felt as she slowly became more lightheaded and weak from the blood loss…

Hark! The end of the month approacheth nigh!

Star twitched, slightly distracted by Xino's words. "Shh. I can't focus unless..." She got a hold on her center once more. "We're not too far," she said softly. "Though, if too many of those creatures start appearing we might have a bit of trouble." She shook her head, continuing to advance. "There's something here, interfering with the signal I'm tracking. I don't know what it is, but I don't like it one bit."

"You can still locate it, right?" asked Xino.

"Yes..." Star said. "And it's... closer than I think..."

"Here?" asked Xino, stopping suddenly.

Xino scanned the area. "Hmm..." he muttered. "Pheonix? You have any idea where this cell is hiding?"

Pheonix nodded slowly, screwing up his face in concentration. "It's... hidden itself from us," he said in a slightly strained voice. "That's... odd."

But even as he said it, reality began to warp, something not unlike an gigantic, twisted walnut materializing in midair. Pheonix exhaled. "But there it is."

Xino stared at it. "So," he asked. "What do we do next?"

Pheonix reached out a hand uncertainly and laid it on the Nightmare Pod, wincing slightly as he did so.

"I think... we command it to open?" he said uncertainly. "Somehow?"

Pheonix pulled Narrative power into himself and spoke.

The Nightmare Pod split open, revealing the captive inside.

Suddenly, the shadows lost their grip, and the nightmares faded away. Jaywalk looked down at his hands—his vision was blurry, sight and sound blending together. He fell to his knees, seizing, and finally, his vision went black.

And then he awoke.

”Star? I thought you were...what happened?”

Star grinned. "The real you was trapped inside of here. Hopefully now that we've freed your consciousness you'll be free from those nightmares too." She sighed, straightening her back. "It's time to go home."

Ember ran, her surroundings blurring past her. She jumped down the steps four at a time, some splinters of wood flying up in protest of her considerable weight. But never mind that. There were far more pressing things to deal with. As she moved, she sent a prayer to TVG, begging her deity to keep Heather safe and also pleading for forgiveness. She dearly hoped that she was doing the right thing by going to get Star.

Ember’s mental capacity allowed her to instinctively remember each and every turn that they had made within the Branch. Star’s signature was getting stronger. Unfortunately, the same interference that had kept Ember from fully feeling her master’s soul song was also weakening Ember’s protective influence on Heather’s mind. That was just another reason for her to run faster.

"Out of the Branch and in Tom's ship. We've been there ever since the Universes were split. Well, I suppose that's not entirely true. Xino and I went to Silence's Realm as well. And I... killed Silence himself. Hopefully with him gone things will start to cool off in the plot. We can... settle down..." Star trailed off, looking longingly at the floor.
