Right! Sorry for the wait.

Pheonix ran after Star as she sprinted towards the cargo hold, where - he knew - a broken girl sat among a pile of shattered glass.

Tom was sure he could reverse what had been done to Heather, if only she would let him.

If anyone could help her, Star could.

LET THE TRAUMA BEGIN!

Star skid on her sandals into the wine cellar. She froze and looked around with horror at the scratched wood and broken glass. When her eyes fell upon Heather, she gasped. Even though Pheo had warned her before hand, seeing an Inquisitor… Seeing Heather with those metal spikes through her eyes, with the blood dripping down her chin… It was a nightmare. Far worse than she had dared allow herself to imagine. “Heather?” she whispered. A massive, heavy wave of emotion settled upon her. How could this have happened? How could she have found her happy ending when so many were suffering so badly right beneath her nose? Star made her way to Heather slowly, grief shining in her eyes as she knelt beside her. “Oh, Heather,” she said tearfully. “You poor dear, how did this happen to you?” Her voice broke as she continued. “What did Ruin do to your beautiful face?” The tears began to stream down her face, a sob building in the back of her throat. She wished harder than ever that the universes were bridged back together. But even for a Narrator, the wish was too impossible to be granted with a phrase.

Star choked back a sob. How could Heather sit in the middle of all of this destruction so nonchalantly? How was she so flippant with her own trauma? The answer - the smashed bottles around her - was too much for Star to accept. She had to believe that Heather could change herself. Of course, now that she was an Inquisitor, that change would be a lot harder to manage. Star truly believed that Heather was strong enough, but she saw the fact that this had happened as a personal failure. Star bowed her head and wept, swallowed in deep regret. Just after she had allowed herself to be happy, to be hopeful, her world was turned over once again. "Why you?" she asked through her tears. "Why not ME instead of you? You don't deserve this... I do... I do..."

Star's face fell. "Oh, sweetheart," she said, sniffing. "I don't care what you look like. It's what's in your heart. Remember?" She tried a smile again, but it was weaker this time.

Star sighed, tisking. "I've got plenty of proof," she said. Oh, I wish she were sober... I'd Narrate it, but... Her eyes widened. "Oh!" she said. She turned. "Pheo," she said, her eyes a little red from crying. "Do you mind getting Ember? She'll be around here somewhere."

Also, Xino, I don't think it's a good idea to have Tom be able to reverse Heather's hemalurgy - that sort of thing would be crippling to her character development.

Okay, I suddenly got the burst of inspiration I needed to express this so… Buckle up. Here is TVG’s essay on why Xinophie is better than Phar. I stayed up really late and procrastinated an English assignment that's due tomorow to do this, so… it’s important. Here it is.

Star is a great character. She is. She has drive, she has heart. She’s compassionate and gentle, yet fierce and reckless at the same time. However, she wasn’t always this way and I would argue that her failures define her more than her triumphs do. One such failure is her early social abilities.

She wasn’t a character back then. She was a Narrator and as such, she didn’t need to interact with the story, with other people. After Marsh died, this kind of turned her into a hermit and made her go a little bit insane which you can see clearly on page 536 especially. That is a girl who does not understand how to express emotions. But where this really comes to bite her is in her early interactions with Pheo.

Thinking about the moment when Pheo saved her from herself on the day she tried to take over TLT makes my heart swell with emotion. Star’s emotion. Looking back on it, I’d say she did fall in love with him that day. But, well, she has an extremely difficult time expressing it. She’s really kind of mean to him. She’s condescending and pushy. And the sad truth is, Pheo is kind of a pushover when it comes to her. It’s… really sad. :(

Now fast forward to the present. Star’s social skills are much better. She’s become a motherly figure, but is still completely badchull and awe-inspiring. She’s still got a broken heart, but it’s mending and she’s on her way back to being… well, herself. The best version of her there can be. And Pheo is a huge part of that. He showed her that she could be a hero. Having him close to her is on its way to becoming a fundamental need for her. She’s been without him, without love, for so long, now that she has it back, she’s terrified of losing it. You see this when she wakes up and runs to him, then hugs him tightly, as if afraid he’d melt in her arms, whisked away by the all-powerful plot. So, let’s see what they’ve done since they’ve gotten back to each other. True Love’s Kiss. Okay. That was very cool. A talk about the past… o… kay? You see the condescension there again, I’m afraid. But it ends up being okay because of that adorable part where they start to snuggle - that was pure gold. And then Star goes to sleep for a few days. Wakes up. Kisses him a few times. And… that’s it! Yay! It’s… it’s not bad. It really isn’t. But, well, I’m confused. Star was confused too, but she’s so drunk on the fact that she has him that she’s decided to ignore the fundamental question:

Why?

Why in the world does Pheo love Star? Why? She directly asks him this question and he says something properly adorable along the lines of, “Why wouldn’t I love you?” To that I say, “BECAUSE SHE WAS A FREAKIN’ VILLAIN!” She killed Lift! She killed Lift, Pheo! She also killed Shadow in their duel, and granted, Shadow was being a real jerkface, but still. Star knows better than to kill a fellow Narrator. She was insane and rude and just not a nice person to be around. You’re telling me that Pheo of all people is going to see through this and see who she could end up being? Now, a part of this, a huge part, is just the fact that we rarely see Pheo in the first place. He’s always away with the mimes or something. This is really frustrating to me because I don’t know exactly what my daughter is getting into. That bothers me. So, why, Pheo? Why decide to love her? At what moment did you look at her and realize, “Wow. I want to be with that woman for the rest of my life.” ‘Cause… Star wants to know too. I mean, think about it, how well does Star really know him? Not well. Not well at all. He’s a son of Fate. He made a deal with the mimes. He was created because of Xino’s death. And he saved her from herself. Yay. True Love. It works. Right? Right?!

Okay, and now we must talk about the untouched gem that is Xinophie. They’re opposites. Polar opposites. One thirsts and hungers for plot, the other hates it and its destruction with all her heart and soul. A coward and a hero. But there’s something else that they are that I need to bring to light. Sophie is humble and Xino is… well, he’s kinda prideful. Sophie has the humility that Xino needs and Xino has the courage that Sophie needs. Isn’t that just absolutely beautiful?

Sophie hated Xino at first. Truly. She hated that he was so stuck up and so annoyingly addicted to plot. Hated what he thought about Silence, too. But then something changed. Here’s the question again: why? Sophie loves Xino because she saw that courage. And she admired it so much She’s read about her sisters’ heroisms time and time again, but seeing Xino in action? He’s her hero. Deep inside, she does want the plot. She’s my daughter after all. Her anxiety is just too strong though. She wants the Silence to push that away. And she’s slowly learning about herself, learning that using Silence would be the easy way out. And that's just not how I write things. :)

What a beautiful character arc. One that would continue so perfectly if she summoned up the courage to go and save Xinoehp. There is basis for a truly meaningful relationship there. (so long as you ignore the considerable age gap that is...) They would build on each other and just be absolutely perfect. Xinophie, guys. It’s the storming best.

I know that. But there really isn't any reason why he wouldn't be able to, if he was allowed to try.

Tom is so OP. :P

Ember looked up. She was still kneeling on the ground before the mirror, hands clasped in her lap. She blinked in surprise at Pheonix, unsure of what to say or do. She studied him with her eyes, trying to gauge his reason for coming. Was she in trouble? She hoped she wasn't in trouble...
