Attayl continued to sip her tea, hesitated and then asked shyly.

"What are you talking about? What's an atmosphere?"

She blushed when she realized, that it had been a dumb question.

"Never mind."

She added quickly and tried to hide her face behind her cup.

Brillin looked at Attayl and when he saw she was embarrassed he chuckled a bit.

“No, it’s a good question.” Brillin made some gesture, to the air above him.

“They found it out really recently. It’s what you call the air that’s super high up, beyond the birds and clouds.”

He chuckled and she smiled as well. It felt good to hear laughter again, after everything they needed some laughter. Especially if it was Brillin laughing. She nodded at his explanation and looked out of the window. The sky was blue, as always, the thought, that the air up in the sky had a special name seemed ridiculous, but then so many things had special names. If she could read, then she could learn all of this. How the air was called, and so many things she didn't even know that they existed.

"So the blue air is the atmosphere?"

She asked mostly to confirm that she'd gotten in right.

Alyssa made her way back just in time for Brillin to pose his question.

“They wouldn’t look like us because they would be from different planets. With different air, different water, different atmospheres. Different animals, different evolution, they wouldn’t have Harmony, they’re whole world would be different to ours, and the chances of an alien species looking like us is astronomically low.”

"Well, somewhere out in the universe there's got to be a planet that has similar water and atmosphere. Some of them do have different animals. Those that do if they have humans then they are placed there. Harmony? Well, there is... Do you know of Preservation and Ruin? There are, or were, 14 others like that. However, none of them have, merged, like Harmony." She sat down. "And I thought this conversation was over."

"And yes, blue air is the atmosphere." She smiled. "Now, what problems do we have here? How are we going to attempt solving those problems?" She grinned. "What is our plan of action?"

Nerin looked at Alyssa, brow knitting.

"Action? What is there for us to do but survive this war?" She began chewing on one of her nails absently. "We've already negotiated protection... it should be enough. The Farriers will take care of us, Lance..."

Nerin swallowed, recalling his hand on her bare shoulder. She ground her teeth together, halfway towards cursing him, halfway into a blush. The Farrier Tineye's words floated back to her.

"Yes, he does tend to have that effect."

Rust him.

"Where is he, anyway?" She asked the room, crossing her arms in what she hoped was an unaffected, casual way. "Still lurking on the roof?"

Attayl tried to hide more behind her cup when Alyssa returned and continued to discuss with Brillin. She felt so incredibly stupid. Books, atmospheres, planets and harmony. Well at least she knew harmony. How there could be 14 of them she didn't know, but as nobody asked her she simply pulled up her shoulders, tried to appear smaller. Brillin would never look at her again, with someone like Alyssa around. She was intelligent, and good looking and she obviously like to discuss things with him.

She was grateful when Nerin changed the topic to something she knew about.

"No he left a while ago. Back to the gang I suppose."

Nerin did her best to ignore the slight swoop of her stomach when Attayl mentioned Lance's absence.

"Oh," she said, then sniffed a bit, pulling a tiny sneer onto her face. "It's for the best, I think. No good having him looming around here, breaking all my rusting windows, swaggering around like he owns the place." Carrying me upstairs, giving me his coat...

Nerin cleared her throat a bit, forcing her face to obey and maintain her unaffected expression.

"Where's John?" Alyssa asked. Nerin looked at the girl, then thought for a moment, recalling something.

"I think he left with Aben, right when we got back."

Six men rushed down the narrow hallway towards Aben, guns drawn. Aben charged, kicking the first man in the chest, then waded through the rest, bashing heads with the pommel of his blade.

John made his way through the door, and saw the men. Aben took of all of them, taking care no to hurt them. John rushed past him and found more men rushing at Lance and whoever that other person was. John yelled, startling the attackers and he wacked a couple with his sword pommel and knocked the last one out with the metalmind bracer on his arm. He glanced at the two. "Fine predicament that you got yourselves into."

Brillin sighed and facepalmed. Fourteen other gods? He turned away as Alyssa talked to Nerin and he sat down on the bed, looking towards Attayl, who was... hiding behind a cup? She told Nerin where she thought Lance was and he grimaced at the mention of him. Breaking windows and crashing parties and the like.

“You and Lance might get along, actually,” he said to Alyssa. “Both of you have your little illusions. Him with being a Mistborn and you with your... planets.”

Attayl shook her head.

“I felt him use both metals.”

She insisted.

“Maybe he’s not a mistborn, but he can use two of them. And that means, we have to find out how. If he can do that, maybe the others of that gang can as well.”

Pausing she set down the cup when it burned her fingers.

“Just think about, what it would mean. If you could choose what you want to have and then gain it somehow.”

“I could not only be a seeker, but maybe have a second one, a useful one. Something to defend myself, or to protect myself. It’s the clue I suppose. How they got so strong, so fast. Because they were able to add to their abilities, then they could have an army of thugs, able to manipulate metals. How are the others supposed to stand against them?”

Nerin looked up at Attayl as the girl spoke.

Choosing a second metal? That was a thing unheard of - you either got one, or your got them all. Or you were a Twinborn. Nerin knew very little of Feruchemy, and the Terris guarded their art with a quiet ferocity. Still, she'd heard the word. One Allomantic power, one Feruchemical, and that was it. That was all a person could have now.

Except Lance burns both Iron and Bendalloy. Attayl was right - there had to be a way to get another power. And if you could get a second... who was to say you couldn't get a third?

"I think he's a Coppercloud too," Nerin said softly, recalling the way Lance had easily shrugged off one of her most powerful Soothings. "Lance, I mean. I can't Soothe him, and he doesn't wear an aluminum hat. Copper is the only other way."

Nerin pushed down a shiver. Copperclouds. Dangerous folk - Nerin knew that well enough. Harmony, but she knew. Against a Coppercloud, she was helpless. Just a girl with two hairpin daggers. Though if she could have a second metal... Nerin pictured herself as a Coinshot, the eye in a maelstrom of metal. Things would have gone very differently today if she... if...

One of the walls in her mind warped and shivered, a solid crack running through the Beautiful Room. Nerin looked down and away, as though the truth of things were lurking in the corner of Brillin's room, and she merely needed to turn her head to make it disappear.

"When he comes back - if he comes back, I'll ask him," she said, staring at the floor. "It's time for answers."

A little boy ran through the streets. He was fast, as fast as a child at the age of seven could be, small enough to fit between the adults and to use paths the grown ups had forgotten about. He had a goal in mind, had seen what happened to the two Farriers, had seen the others come to their aid, but in the end that was only a part of the reason he was running. He had heard some of the Farriers talking and he wanted to see if it was true. He had thought he was the last one, but maybe he wasn’t, maybe someone else had survived. He would feel better if he wasn’t alone, even if it meant, that he had to leave his quarter for a while, had to go to a parlor. Why the whore was there he didn’t know, but she was the only other one left, so maybe he could use her to secure a place in another gang. She had connections, knew lots of people.

He stopped in front of the parlor door and knocked.

Downstairs, someone knocked on the door.

Nerin groaned, leaning her head back against the door frame, and closed her eyes for a moment. Then, with a sigh, she turned and walked back downstairs, stoking the brass burning within her and sending out a Soothing before she even got to the door. Nerin pulled the curtain aside for a moment, almost doing a double-take when she spotted the spindly, short form of a boy on her porch.

With slightly less irritation, Nerin unbolted the door and cracked it open, Soothing away some of the boy's likely anxiety and distrust.

"You'd think I'm a dog-catcher the way this place is taking in strays," she said under her breath, shooing the boy inside and closing the door again, sliding the bolt into place and tugging the curtain closed again. Nerin turned to get a better look at the boy, crossing her arms but incapable of keeping a small smile off her face.

She pointed to one of the tables and went behind the bar to pour the boy a mug of small beer. The boy watched her with keen eyes as she set it down before him, then took the seat opposite, maintaining a small but level Soothing on him to keep him comfortable and less likely to run off.

"Right," she said, sighing. "What are you doing here, then?"

"Right," she said, sighing. "What are you doing here, then?"

He sat down, took the beer and tried to appear strong and self-confident.

"I'm looking for Attayl. I've got some important information for her."

For a moment he was silent, then couldn't stop himself.

"The Farriers have been beaten. One of their higher up, Leon, Larry? No Lenny, I think it was Lenny, even knocked out."

Excitedly he looked at her.

"Attayl has to help me find a new gang, and then we can wipe the Farriers off our place. They want to take over the canal, tonight and if I lead another gang there, my place with them is secured."

As Nerin went downstairs to cater to a knock on the door Brillin brought his attention to what Attayl had said. Choosing your metals. Two or even three Allomancy powers. Brillin wanted to dismiss the idea, but he just couldn’t get himself to do it. Attayl was a Seeker. She’d heard what she heard, how long was Brillin going to try and dodge the truth because it was outside of what he’d known, what he’d documented on his travels?

He looked down. “There’s only one way I know anyone’s ever able to change themselves,” he said, then looked up at Attayl.

“I mean really changed themselves. Their former appearance, gone, added strength, added weight, whole new physiology and psychology, by their own choice of course.” He shrugged, though inside his mind was whirring.

“It’s the Koloss spikes. Who knows how, but if you want to, they —Koloss— use the spikes, transform you. I guess being a Koloss is a whole other ability, right? And they get to choose it too.” He couldn’t shake the feeling there was some similarity between the transformations of the Koloss to Lance, and how in the world he could possibly have more than one metal without being a Mistborn.

“After all, if he was a full Mistborn he’d have found better ways to fight and move around than just Lurching.”

“After all, if he was a full Mistborn he’d have found better ways to fight and move around than just Lurching.”

Attayl considered his words. Koloss spikes. He was right. Changing into a Koloss was like a new ability and she had felt only two metals from Lance. So what if he only had two? What if there was a way to add to one’s abilities, to choose a metal.

“So you mean, that maybe he found something like a Koloss spike? A spike granting him a second metal?”

She tried to wrap her head around it and sat down on the floor next to the bed. For a while she was silent, thought about it again.

“I mean why not? I don’t see a reason why it shouldn’t work. If you can use metal to influence emotions, if you can use a spike to turn someone into a Koloss, then why not use a spike to add another metal to the ones you can use.”

But there had to be something else, a secret. If it were easy, then everybody would walk around with these spikes.

“Maybe you have to inscribe them with some ancient symbols and the language was lost over the centuries. It would explain the Mistborn of ancient times. They all started with one metal, as we have today, but they knew how to enhance their abilities.”

Nerin blinked at the boy, trying to understand what he was talking about. Lenny? A canal? Some kind of fight? And exactly how had he known that Attayl was here?

Lenny...wait.

"Lance?" Nerin said, leaning forward despite herself, gripping the edge of the table. "Do you mean Lance? Blonde, carries a cane, wears a mask?"

She swept her hand across her eyes to mimic Lance's ridiculous half-mask. Fear gripped her heart then, squeezing with iron fingers. If Lance was captured, if the Farriers were beaten, then there would be no one left to protect them from the Scarlets. They'd all end up like...

Nerin's gaze flicked toward the kitchen door - just for a moment, but it was enough. She stood, not waiting for the boy's answer.

"Attayl?" She called, panic leaking into her voice, making it more shrill, more insistent. "Attayl, Brillin, get down here. There's someone here who wants a word!"

Attayl remained sitting for a moment, then she got up.

“We should head downstairs. Maybe Nerin is in trouble. Visitor’s weren’t exactly a good sign lately.”

She walked downstairs and froze, still standing on the steps once she saw the visitor. Zekiel. He was young, but he was like a symbol for everything that kept her chained to the gang, to their rules and their leaders. She took another step, but remained standing on the last step, held on to the handrail.

“Zeke. Why are you here?”

The boy narrowed his eyes at her.

“Because you will help me find a new gang. The Farriers are weak, their Lenny-guy was defeated and some others as well. You will convince the Fingers to take me in. They won’t say no to you, you have the reputation to be willing enough, despite that ugly scar.”

Speechless she stared at him, at his young cruel face. How easily he assumed, that she would do what he wanted her to do, how she was tempted to do so. Instead she only stood, her eyes flickered to Nerin. Lance, not Lenny. That explained Nerin’s face, how she stood there. Nerin and Lance.

“Come on.”

Zeke stood up, emptied his mug and motioned for her to follow him out of the room.

“You have no business here.”

Attayl only stared, moved slightly away from him. She wanted to leave, to go. She didn’t want to head back, she wanted to talk to Brillin, ask him about his journey. She wanted to help Nerin, even if it meant to help Lance. She wanted to escape.

Brillin made his way down the stairs and saw Nerin and Attayl talk to a young boy by the door. He kept his distance. Young boys on the street had a habit for gossip and Brillin didn’t want news of the “Koloss man in the broadsheets” hanging out in the parlour to attract the constabulary.

Still, the boy looked like he was giving them trouble and so he walked closer. Heard the conversation about Lance. Heard the boy — Zeke — tell Attayl to come with him.

“She’s with us,” Brillin said, though he said it while beside the doorframe so the boy couldn’t see who was talking, just that someone was.

Zeke tried to look upstairs, to see who had talked, but Attayl quickly walked down the steps, blocked hie view.

"Where did you hear about Lance?"

She asked him and Zeke shrugged.

"Harbor. Somewhere there. There is supposed to be a fight there tonight. I doubt the prisoners will survive."

He reached out for her hand.

"Come on. We need to go. You have to make sure I'll get a new place."

Attayl paled and stepped back, looked at Nerin for help, then upstairs to Brillin and Alyssa.

"I'm with them."

She whispered.

"Look for a new gang by yourself."
