World Jumping

Hoidwillsaveus

Question

Ok so yet another question from a newby. So I have now read all the cosmere books except arcanum unbound, and I've noticed certain characters popping up in different books. Hoid, Zahel, Nightblood and others. How are they doing this and more to the point why? I understand that they sone of them are ancient and were around when the all of this started, and that they are using certain perpindiclarities to do it. Also that it has something to do with the shards but I'm lost trying to wrap mind around it.

Many if not most are using perpendicularities to get around it is the simplest method.

Spoiler

Save Hoid none of the worldhoppers we have met are that old. As for motives each being has a different one. Zahel is the only one that is somewhat definitive. He was looking to substitute breath for stormlight.

The most common way to move form one world to another is to physically go to the Cognitive Realm and travel there.  the space between worlds is constricted a lot in the CR so there is less distance to travel between say Sel and Nalthis if you want to make the trip.  A Perpendicularity is caused by a large concentration of a Shard's investiture, usually a shardpool, and can be used to travel between the physcal and cognitive realms, since most people are not Elsecallers and can't manage it on their own.  You can actually see this happen in Oathbringer:

Spoiler

In Oathbringer, when Dalinar swears his 3rd Bondsmith Oath, he summons Honor's perpendicularity, which Kaladin and the others use to jump from the Cognitive to Physical realms and enter the battle

So this brings up another question. Since lightweavers can drop into the cognitive realm in order to soul cast could they use the transportation surge as well?Jasnah Kholin has the transportation surge in which she can drop into the cg to travel correct?

Lightweavers have transformation and illumination.  Elsecallers have transformation and transportation.  To the best of my understanding when a lightweaver soulcasts they "astral project" themselves into the CR and touch souls but do not physically go there.  Elsecallers and willshapers can go there do to the transportation surge.

If they astral project so to speak couldn't they still travel. I mean obviously it wouldn't be there physical selves, but they are there in some form.

possibly, but when we've seen Shallan do it, the trips have been very brief.  still with practice you could possibly prolong that.  the question is how much she can actually move away from her body's location in the physical realm.  I don't think we've seen her actually try to do that before, so it's not clear that she actually can.  even if she can do it, there would be dangers to leaving your physical body alone for the length of time it would take to do that, and possibly additional dangers to the cognitive self that is doing the trip that might not apply to someone there physically (not sure on that, but I assume there would be some differences).

@Hoidwillsaveus when a soulcaster projects themselves into the Cognitive, their physical body is left behind. Still sitting there vulnerable in the I hysical. Still needing food and water.

She could wander further away, but there's no way she could make the trip to another world. And eve if she did, it would be impossible to transition back into te physical. She's already in the Physical elsewhere.

I could be wrong but I believe Lightweavers have the ability to peer into the cognitive realm with their soul casting ability but can’t physically travel their like a Elsecaller who can use transportation.
