Kumiko leaned in towards Lita and Okame, still in disguise. "Does anyone want to place bets on how 'voluntary' this was?" She whispered to them in a bored tone. "Also, doesn't this seem kind of boring compared to what the Alleys have?"

“Not neccessarily,” a voice whispered to Kumiko’s right.

A man was standing by their table. He wore dark green, with a cream tabard inscribed with eagles’ wings over the outfit. He barely seemed to notice them as he stared at the screen.

“Those dragons... the possibilities for such a potent Investiture negator are endless...” he murmured. “And those spiked astartes... well, the possibilities are endless...”

He trailed off, seeming to notice the others for the first time.

Berk looked at Alask and frowned. "What does it matter? They're dead now, so who cares? Besides, because of these experiments humanity is now more knowledgable."

“I’m sure the family of the dead cares,” Alask said, peering down at the larkin’s in a cage. “And I doubt the knowledge of what happens when you transfuse Hemalurgic blood with animals is going to come in handy any time soon.”

Berk shrugged. "Knowledge is power, I'd rather know something than not. And if the family is so torn up about it, then we can fix that by experimenting on them too."

Alask nodded wordlessly, looking at the other bits and bobs of the laboratory.

“So, What makes you think you can do the things the DA hasn’t yet?” He asked Sebrial.

Lita turned toward the unfamiliar woman, cocking her head. Another DA member? She thought. Likely yes, based on her choice of words. Who else would consider this kind of experimentation "boring"?

"I'd wager there was rather less 'voluntary' cooperation than they indicate," she whispered back to the woman, smirking darkly. Lita gestured to a seat at their table. "Care to sit?"

Lita tapped one finger against her lips, a little frown creasing her brow as she watched the woman on stage speak. She understood why PlasmaCore had invited the Great Guild representatives - powerful people had deep pockets. What she couldn't quite figure was why they'd invited everyone else. It was a great expense to host a party of this size, complete with food, wine, waitstaff. And for what? Why not pour the resources into a private gathering for Guild reps only?

Lita observed the crowd down below watching the speaker with rapt attention, an itch forming between her shoulder blades. Why hadn't they consulted with the DA first? The amount of research the Alleys had produced was immense, beyond the scope of what anyone could do in a lifetime - in several lifetimes. Why not collaborate? Was it out of pride? And if so, whose pride?

"By whom?" she asked. It was easier to talk now that the focus was off of herself. "And why?"

“By the spren that lives in the valley,” he said. A coalition of dust floated up to make an outline of his figure. Tall, and hovering off of the ground. “You can pick up some things about people when you’ve been watching for that long. How they work.” The dust outline, like a mist sprit, turned towards her. “I still haven’t figured out why people watch, though. Seems awfully boring.”

Lena listened to Berk and Alask talking, thought about their words. What if their lives were ruined, because you experimented on them? What if they had a family. She knew that Alask was talking about himself, about his family, but Berk didn't notice he'd found a sensible spot.

She walked through the lab, while she listened for the answer of the one who had brought them up here. There was no sense to this experiments, what were they aiming at?

When she finished her circuit she stopped between Alask and Berk, looking at their host.

"You are tuned into Alleyfour news for another update on the prison break. Ot seems as if the capture of the Mastermind was just another layer in his schemes. The mad genius broke out two others. A master assassin as well as a former Alley special espionage agent turned traitor. We turn this over to John who has some more details. Over to you John."

The voice that spoke and was seen on the Tv was not that of an Alleyreporter but that of the Mastermind himself. He spoke in a rugged voice.

"Citizens of the Alleycity the balance must be restored. There are those among us who abuse their power. Other who use their power to stop them. The good pitted against the evil. For centuries we feared the forces of void massing against us. You sought to hide and cower beneath a broken god. No more. We will show you what we are, what we have always been and what we will be again. We are what remains of the balance and we will not be over turned. Do not get in the way of balance and destiny, we will be your undoing."

“What does that even mean?” Alask asked, watching the news report play out on the small analog television.

“Balance and destiny? Broken god?”

Lena shrugged.

"I don't know. Maybe the one they freed a little over a year ago? He certaily has tendency for a grand entrance. If he were to arrive here, PlasmaCore and he could battle who is able to set up a better performance."

She joked, but her words felt stale in her mouth. Another player? Balance and destiny. What did he want, what were his goals? First this new company and now that? And why did he adress himself as we? That either meant he thought of himself a king, or he wasn't alone.

“I would pay to see that,” he said distractedly. “But at least we know he’s capable enough to - what - hack a news channel? Maybe he’s not stupid after all.”

"No, he isn't. He's trying to make us afraid, to set himself up as strong, untouchable, above our conflicts."

And the part where they were talking about him, showed that he succeeded. Lena looked at the news channel another time and then grimaced. She turned to Alask, thought about him for a moment. Right now, as long as they blackmailed each other it worked, but still he had asked her to come along, not to stay away. Their relationship was complicated at least. But still, he cared, even about some unkown test subjects.

"We need to talk. In private, later."

She told Alask, and then realized how harsh her words sounded.

"Please?"

“What about?” He asked, curiosity colouring his voice.

Lena looked around and then stepped closer herself. The lab didn't really count as private.

"I'd like to ask you a favor. If this goes wrong."

She replied in a low voice.

“Here?”

Lena sighed. Private. Not in a room with three people listening and an unknown amount of cameras. But then she could have kept her mouth shut.

She handed him a sheet of paper, then softly touched his burnt hand, hoped he would make the connection between what was written on there and their deal himself. Her head gestured towards one of the cameras, silently asking him to read it without them being able to record the content.

Alask looked at the note and her gestures, and he nodded.

Cupping the note in his hands and keeping it down, he slowly tilted it upwards to get a glance like someone would do to see their playing cards at a poker game, then quickly put the note down again.

The note says:

Below are the words:

Alask looked up and frowned. Then he nodded and put the note in his pocket. Why did she touch his burnt hand? He guessed the favour had something to do with that, then.

“So, Mr. Host,” he said, turning back to Sebrial. “What’s your opinion on this Mastermind guy?”

"Should I die."

She whispered to him, and then stepped back. They would never make a pair of good spies.

Alask nodded slowly before he realised what she was saying. Wait, what? It was annoying he couldn’t just ask flat out, the security in this place was intense. Way too intense for some simple ‘experiments.’

What do you say, Shez? Doesn’t this place look a bit too heavily watched to be a normal facility?

“There’s more, Alask.”

Alask sighed. Not this again. More what?

“I can hear them.”

Berk turned to Sebrial. "There is way too much security in this place for random experiments. What's your real project?"
