AJ paled. He glanced at Tom. They'd better be almost there.

"Ah!" SepLar cried, "But we have things to be about." 

Oh? Like what?

"Well, we should find that Sliver, for one." 

And do you have any idea where to find her?

"Well, I vaguely saw her get towed off by a flying thing. She went out over the lake."

SepLar jumped up, striding towrds the boats and inspecting them.

The breadmunk mewed pitifully and followed her.

Outside, the sound of the falls grew louder. Samika growled and gripped the key harder. It flashed brighter and brighter.

Samika screamed. Smoke rose from her hand, but she did not drop it. Tom was waving his arms around in frantic patterns, and it looked as if he was holding her off.

The falls got closer and closer.

Tom lowered his hands, the last red lights going out. "Would that we were so lucky," he muttered. "But I don't think so."

On screen. Samika began to shake, her head turning upwards, her eyes staring sightlessly into the sky.

Slowly, she lowered her head. Even in the dim light of the tunnels, it was easy to see that her eyes had turned a bright, swirling silver.

All at once, every handerfle on the boat turned and looked directly at the screen closest to them. Tom sucked in a breath. "Oh, no..."

Thought felt herself grow cold. "What's happening?" Even AJ didn't speak.

The handerfles blinked. Then, as one, they attacked.

"She's figured out how to mind control them!" cried Tom as he started waving his hands again. "She probably figured it out from my notes."

The falls were even louder now, but Samika's angry growls could still be heard over them. "Just give up already!" she cried. "You know you deserve every last thing I'm going to do to you!"

The breadmunk scurried up onto her seat and snuggled into her lap, mewing softly, but did not respond.

AJ stood up angrily. "I will not just sit here and do nothing while everything crumbles!" he barked. "Either tell me you have a solution or I am going out there right this second."

Tom shook his head. "It's not a big problem to us right now. There's only so much the handerfles can do. But the fact that she can..."

He shook his head again. "The security of my systems was always bad- handerfles are horrible at that sort of thing. This is just going to make it worse."

Mist from the falls began to sweep across the boat as it approached.

Thought's eyes widened as something occurred to her. "Tom," she said. "I'm still a Sliver. My mental power is stronger than that of a normal human. There may be a possibility that I..." She bit her lip. The idea was stupid. She hadn't the power anymore. "I could wrestle control away from her."

"And that won't take long," Thought said quietly to herself. She was useful. Maybe.

The handerfles rioted.

They rampaged through every passage and chamber, ripping and destroying whatever they could get their hands on. Red warning lights popped up throughout the cabin.

Tom dispatched them with small flicks of his fingers and wrists, keeping his attention focused on the screen where Samika stood. The ship was almost to the falls; would she make a move?

Rorim huddled in his hideout, watching the chaos outside. Never had he been so glad for Tom's constant control over him.

His resistance to Tom's control of his brother, Arsek, now seemed silly. What if he died? He couldn't transfer to the Cognitive Realm- Tom had given his Portal Key to the half-handerfle. With no-one waiting to catch his soul, death now would be permanent.

He wasn't religious, but he shot a prayer to every god he'd heard of. Just in case.

Samika wailed.

"I know you have it, Tami! You can't hide it from me! You can't hide from meeeee!"

The ship slid into the falls. White spray obstructed the view on near-every screen for a few seconds, and the crashing of the water obscured every other sound. Then it was over.

And Samika was gone.

Thought blinked, the sound of her own breathing loud in her ears. She was so... scared. That wasn't an emotion she remembered feeling as a Shard. She didn't like it. "So," she muttered, "it's over, then? We're safe?" Safe.The word sounded like a dream.

Far, far, above hung a ship so massive it could hardly be comprehended. Wisps of cloud swirled around its pristine white surface, disguising it almost completely.

"CloudBase," said Tom. "My home."
