Best Cosmere Book

Recommended Posts

I am biased.

Mistborn will always be my favorite Cosmere series. It was my first Sanderson book, I love how it completely averts the medieval stasis trope, I love the political intrigue of the second book and the theological discussions of the third and sixth books. I absolutely love Mistborn.

Trying to make me choose between the Mistborn books is evil. It's like choosing a favorite cousin. I love them all for different reasons. Maybe I'm closer to some than others, but I love them all and couldn't choose a favorite.

Elantris, because I like standalone novels, which are rare in the fantasy series, and I love all the main characters. It's really the only one of his books that I don't forget half the characters from when I look back on it. I like the simple structure, and the way it's played with, and I like Hrathen and everything he does.

If I had to choose a single story, it would be The Emperor's Soul.

It's short and sweet, it's amazingly complex for what it is... And it's just a damnation good story.

I actually agree with this.

That being said, I'm a sucker for those huge moments that make a book. As far as those its a tie between:

"I am Unity"

and

Harmony smiled. "Trust."

Ok, fine, Emperor's soul can go on the list too :) It is probably one of my favorites in arcanum unbounded.

Stormlight is my favorite series of his. The Way of Kings is my favorite of those. I love the world building in it, I love the foreshadowing of the Prelude and the way the Prologue shows off the magic system. No big moments were more satisfying for me than Kaladin saving Dalinar and then "For the bridgemen. All of them."

All the deaths Kaladin witnesses and is helpless to stop make it feel so good when something finally goes well..

I am a sucker for big libraries and lore so Shallan/Jasnah reading books was really satisfying for me and I don't mind that it doesn't cross over much with the other goings on.

So many amazing opening sentences "Szeth-son-son-vallano wore white on the night he was to kill a king."

Child of Tanavast chapter 46 may be my favorite chapter in all of Stormlight. With the weird out of body experience that gives us a first look at the weirdness of the rest of Roshar. "Kaladin dreamed he was the storm"

To the conversation with the Stormfather.

Quote

"War is there so much war? Must we always fight?"  The storm rumbled like a thoughtful aged father. ODIUM REIGNS

The one real flaw to me is Kaladin's flashbacks. Too long and repetitive, Tien feels more like a metaphor for innocence than a person and his father annoys me.  Shallan's are much better in WoR even though they are also about her miserable childhood. But the Dalinar-Kaladin ending to tWoK makes puts it over the top for me. Also WoR barely has Jasnah and she is one of my favorites.

Oathbringer is longer than the other books yet felt like pieces were missing. Szeth explaining himself after the battle and the radiants accepting him, Jasnah greeting her family after returning.

I actually think my favorite story is Shadows for Silence in the Forest of Hell.  The tone and pacing of that story really hooked me.  I was immediately invested in the characters and thought the setting was awesome.

As far as full novels go, I think Mistborn: The Final Empire is my favorite.  Again the setting was super interesting to me, but the characters here are IMO the best Sanderson has ever done.  Thinking about that now I just think that Vin and especially Kelsier are so damnation good it carries everyone else.  The way The Lord Ruler was dealt with at the end was something that really sticks out to me.

I love Oathbringer Dalinar's arc is one of the most interesting and well executed that I have ever seen.

Double above. Dalinar is one of my favorite characters. Plus it held my attention throughout, a very difficult thing to do in that long of a book.

I love Shadows of Self as a novel. I think it just is great at everything it does, from the action scenes, to the philosophy discussed, to the interactions between nearly every character. I love the interactions between Wax and Bleeder, Marasi and Melaan, and all of the others. I think the plot itself is just phenomenal as well (if you couldn’t tell, I could go on for a while...)

My three favorite are HoA, WoK, and WoR. WoR is probably my favorite. I remember when I read WoK I thought that no book could possibly top this, then I read WoR and thought hey, this on just did. I didn't really like HoA or Oathbringer very much the first time, but while both of them got better with the reread, HoA became one of my favorites and Oathbringer was just a little better.

I like the way HoA brings things together in the end. I love the world building of SA, both the depth and the way it's written into the story. I also love the many epic moments throughout SA. And mostly I love Lift, I just can't wait for her book.

This is like asking me to pick a diamond out of a pile of diamonds

If I had to pick one though WOR I have lost count of how many times I have re read that book and each time I notice some small but important detail that I missed before. Six of Dusk would probably be a close second though.
