+Oltux72 he/him Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 Pattern can support an illusion and Syl can use Adhesion. Can Cryptics inherently create illusions or is this a result of the bond? And if so, can they take up other abilirties of their partner? Spren seem to pick up the language their partner speaks for example. But how about magic? If a spren bonded a Rioter, can he or she riot after that?
Turin Turambar Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 Yeah - in the book it says that it is a symbiotic bond - the Radiant get the powers and stuff, and they gain sentience. As for the rest of the question...I don't know? I'd speculate to guess that IF a spren did actually bond a Rioter (the circumstances worked out, some how) the spren wouldn't get the power because it's two completely different magic systems. Maybe not, though, because Hoid has done some strange things with magic. Great question, though! 1
I think I am here. he/him Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 I think the abilities of the spren are already there. For example, windspren and honourspren already are known for tricks and sticking things to each other - a use of the adhesion surge. I think by Bonding with someone, the spren basically grants this ability of theirs onto the human, so now the human can use adhesion as well. We don’t see Syl ever using gravitation, so maybe it’s only the primary surge the spren have. But I don’t think they get powers out of the relationship, because they’re already getting something (sentience).

And the Skybreaker spren seem to fly too, hence Gravitation. They look like rips in reality (I think that’s how it was put) so division. Wyndle grows along the ground or sky, so Progression. No Abrasion.

CrazyRioter she/her Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 Syl can fly herself, but lots of spren can do that in the PR. We've never seen her manipulate the gravity of an object or person.

I think it always describes him on or moving over surfaces. But I was saying that mostly tongue in cheek, because like @CrazyRioter said, lots of types of spren fly. I didn't mean for it to be real proof that Syl has gravitation surge.

No Abrasion If Wyndle could use Progression by himself, why did he doubt Lift's ability to heal with Progression? He just would have done it himself.
Turin Turambar Posted February 22, 2019 Posted February 22, 2019 I'm not sure that he could actually affect anything on the material plane.

Pathfinder Posted February 22, 2019 Posted February 22, 2019 Regarding spren means of locomotion, one interesting about Syl is it is continually commented on how she acts as if she has her own gravity. As in she will walk down a wall towards Kaladin, or walk up invisible steps. When talking to him upside down, her hair is not hanging, it is down as if Kaladin is the one upside down instead of her. The description comments on that specifically. As to Pattern, i will need to check, but I feel the few times we see Pattern float, he drifts back down to the ground as if he cannot maintain it. Wyndle grows as is mentioned. Truthwatcher spren seem to move across the ground as well. Ivory shrinks down to a speck and zips across the ground. The stormfather is understandably an exception lol. I do not beleive we get to see Malata's spren. Hmmm, am I missing anyone?
+Oltux72 he/him Posted February 22, 2019 Author Posted February 22, 2019 Voidspren fly, at least the yellow guidance spren. So do many subspren. For this purpose I see no reason to limit the discussion to spren commonly bonding Knights Radiant.
