MozytheHealer she/her Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 I made a thing. It was originally a prom dress from the late 80s, and I cut it up and beaded it and stuff. The idea of a Mistdress actually came from KChan. It's kinda hard to tell, but the skirt is actually tassels. :{D There are more pictures on my tumblr. 15
Argent he/him Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 I might be looking at this incorrectly, but this looks more like a mistcorset. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't a dress like this reveal some (read: all), um... delicate areas? 1
Kobold King he/him Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 This is really awesome! Sadly, it is physically impossible for a Mistborn-themed dress to be worn without being ripped off in the middle of an action sequence. 1
Fifth of Daybreak he/him Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 (edited) Great job! That looks awesome! I might be looking at this incorrectly, but this looks more like a mistcorset. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't a dress like this reveal some (read: all), um... delicate areas? I wonder what a Vorin dress built for a mistborn would look like? Lots of room in the safehand sleeve for spare metals. Edited May 20, 2014 by EMTrevor 4
MozytheHealer she/her Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 I might be looking at this incorrectly, but this looks more like a mistcorset. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't a dress like this reveal some (read: all), um... delicate areas? I'd be wearing pants underneath. It is a dress, technically, and I have problems with corsets, which is why it isn't that. I think technically it is what would be called a corset dress, if it had a corset, but the top part only looks like a corset because there's no way I'm putting myself through that kind of torture. I've kinda made it so that I think it would get out of the way in a fight, which is also why it doesn't have a full skirt(although that's more because the original skirt was absolutely hideous), but it would be a little inconvenient if it was a full dress. Great job! That looks awesome! I wonder what a Vorin dress built for a mistborn would look like? Lots of room in the safehand sleeve for spare metals. Thankie. That's a super cool concept. It would probably get in the way of fighting, but I might experiment with it when making another dress that already has to be ripped a bit. :{D
Swimmingly he/him Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 No. The safehand actually contains a cache of coins, which can be shot all at once like a single-shot shotgun - a pepperpot.
MozytheHealer she/her Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 Ooh. I like that idea. So, instead of it being like a mistcloak, it would just be specially modified for Mistborn? I could see that working really well, because they have really long sleeves, so there's a lot of room there for vials and such.
Swimmingly he/him Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Buttons on the sleeves, with each button made of a different Allomantic metal (or painted to look like it?)
MozytheHealer she/her Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 The only thing I can really see being a problem is the skirt. Full silk skirts are really flowy and pretty and all, but it would probably be difficult to jump around in. I bet you could do something to get them out of the way, though. The buttons on the sides could be fake metal as well. Maybe the symbols? I like using the symbols(as you can probably see....). :{D If you had eight on each side, I think that would be enough, depending on the length of the torso of the dress. Obviously it'd have to come off easily as well, so special buttons would probably be helpful.
Argent he/him Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 No. The safehand actually contains a cache of coins, which can be shot all at once like a single-shot shotgun - a pepperpot. I kid you not, I've been trying to remember the word pepperpot (because of the one Alice wields) for over two years now. Every now and then I would try to tell a friend about Alice: Madness Returns and I would realize I can't remember the word for pepper-storming-pot. I would then proceed to forget I couldn't find the word, so I wouldn't look it up, and the vicious cycle would repeat... On topic now. I do like the idea now. I am biased towards certain dress styles, so I think the "tassels" would look better on the back (similar to Wax's coat, now that I think about it), but that's definitely a personal preference thing.
Khyrindor he/him Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 I was thinking tassels would be cool too, for the dress part. Wow. Vorin Mist-dress. We You guys are awesome.
MozytheHealer she/her Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 You could probably weight the ends of the sleeves down and make them weapons(not even kidding). Long, bell-like sleeves are awesome weapons. You know how you could work in the tassels? So(from what I've seen from art and stuff, as well as my own designs) there's often two layers of skirts on a Vorin dress, so you could have a full skirt, and then the tassels would be the 'overskirt'. 1
+Quitecontrary she/her Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 (edited) I went shopping yesterday and was sorely tempted to buy the Kate Moss tasseled dress sold in Topshop. I tried it on, moved around and twisted this way and that, to get the feel of the tassels flying around me. It was both weird and fun. Long tassels are IN. I think I'm going back there tomorrow to buy it. A chance to own a modern-day, fashion-forward mistcloak/mistdress. *image courtesy of topshop -- In topic now, I think the material of the tassels could be softer (again if we're looking at what's in now). Long fringes on the dress (not outside of it) are definitely a hit, and I see them in some really high end collections lately. However, if you will stick with the short hard tassels on the longer asymmetrical hem, I agree on the pants being the best option. Body hugging pants will make the dress stand out. If you have the time, you can probably find a material similar to the dress, and sew this into pants, maybe of a more matte and stretchable material to get the dress design to shine. I adore the beading but I think putting symbols on the top and bottom hem are a bit too much. I would like the symbols on top to stay with a piping or underlain cloth of a different color to bring them out. Then choose one symbol to intricately create at the upper asymmetrical hem, like a brand. Have you thought of the shoes for this? I'd love an atium symbol beaded on solid black high-heeled pumps. It'd then be one-of-a-kind. Like those fleur-de-lis shoes: All my opinions, and of course you don't have to listen to a cook. Edited May 28, 2014 by Quitecontrary
MozytheHealer she/her Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 (edited) No, I love the ideas. Unfortunately, I had very little...freedom with this dress. As it was an 80s prom dress, not only is it made out of a fabric that isn't even trying to be real cloth(seriously, it sheds little pieces of plastic when you cut it), but it's stupidly asymmetrical and I can't do anything about it. The top hem will(hopefully) be hidden by my Mistcloak, so all that beading will only be seen when I wear it for general steampunk stuff. I love the idea of extra tassels on the pants. I really was kinda disappointed that they weren't longer, but I have a ton of material from the original skirt that I could totally do something like that(even though sewing those tassels was torture). Of course, when I wear this for Mistborn-y stuff, I'll have a cloak and that will definitely add tassels. :{D The shoes I think I'll be wearing are these big knee-high boots I've got. However, I know I'm going to put the atium symbol on my bracer, and I might end up making similar armor to go over my boots, and then I could put some symbols there as well. I, unfortunately, detest wearing heels(I'm 5'7" and heels just make me look inhuman and I kinda get Clamp style legs....)(apologies to super tall people), so I doubt that I would do something like that for a costume I intend to wear a lot, but *coughs* I was thinking I might start doing commissioned beaded stuff on my etsy store someday(once I get a little better at it), so I might do something like that as an example of what I do... It's not likely, but it's an idea. Edit: Oh my lordy. Putting the atium symbol on that bracer was probably the most difficult thing I've ever done for cosplay. It was like some kind of convoluted puzzle. O.o Edited May 28, 2014 by MozytheHealer
BreathTaker he/him Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 In the new 300 movie, the main psycho girl is basically wearing a mistdress IIRC.
