+Sorana she/her Posted January 21, 2019 Posted January 21, 2019 (edited) I thought end of chapter 16, beginning of chapter 17? My bad. Doesn't matter as it's monday I started the next part already... Edited January 21, 2019 by Sorana
+Ark1002 Posted January 21, 2019 Posted January 21, 2019 Huh. But wouldn't I spoil it for everyone? Also, I don't have book one, only book two. :-/
+Sorana she/her Posted January 21, 2019 Posted January 21, 2019 Only a part of us haven't read it at all, some are rereading, some stopped during the series. Simply try to mention nothing where we haven't been so far and it should work...
old man moomba he/him Posted January 21, 2019 Posted January 21, 2019 When they had the dreams? That bit is chalk full of refrences to the later books, especially Min's predictions. It makes a great reread.
whattheHoid she/her Posted January 21, 2019 Posted January 21, 2019 Yeah some people have already read the series before, so don't worry about it Ark! Yes, @Sorana for the past 3 weeks, I have heard nothing but Vivaldi's Ring of Mystery. And looking at pictures of Venice and the Island of the Dead (I don't mind the pictures part, though!)
old man moomba he/him Posted January 21, 2019 Posted January 21, 2019 Yup. Just looked over my notes for that chapter. Still great.
old man moomba he/him Posted January 21, 2019 Posted January 21, 2019 I have PDF copies of the first three books on my Kindle. The rest of the books are slowly decomposing in a cabinet.

I agree and also the wind that shakes the willow gave me chills since I listened to an adaptation on YouTube: This channel has lots of good adaptations of WoT songs Edited January 21, 2019 by Doomstick
Rhapsody she/her Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 I completly agree on the Min part and the dreams. It reminds me of this scene.
whattheHoid she/her Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 (edited) Ok, so I guess I will put up my thoughts of what I have read so far. My chapter ends where Rand and Co end up leaving Baerlon in the night and are just about to get to <spoiler> Spoiler Shadar Logoth Please keep in mind I have read the series before and am coming into this with that mindset. I am noticing things that I maybe missed or forgot during my first read. I will be sure though to spoiler tag anything that could ruin first time readers. As i wouldn't want anybody to have their first time ruined! Ok, so we open with Lews Therin, later known as Kinslayer as it appears he has killed everyone he has loved or held dear. You get the impression that he is ill or mad and that he wouldn't have done something so heinous if he was in a better frame of mind. We also meet an adversary <spoiler> Spoiler A Forsaken, Ishmael. they are super interesting! We get the impression that the Dark One is trying to take over and the Lews Therin and some people tried to fight him off but the Dark One did them dirty. In the end of the prologue, Lews Therin basically kills himself and earth surrounds him and he is buried in it. Not a spoiler, I'm told... it's Dragonmount! Don't know how to delete spoiler boxes! Spoiler Dragonmount! Then we meet Rand and Emonds Field which was once Manetheren. So this starts out as a typical fantasy book, almost reminiscent of LOTR or any other you could think of. I really love that women and men are both in charge. However, it seems perhaps the Women's Circle holds more weight or they are more feared, at least with Nyneave on the Council! It is refreshing that women are held in such high regard as compared to other societies that we read about. *cough cough, Vorin society, what's up!?* It's also neat to see our 3 main protaganists Rand, Mat, and Perrin interact with each other before things get serious. They are all neat characters and balance each other out. And we met Egwene, who I'll admit I first wasn't too fond of, but knowing who she is to become; she is super awesome! We also meet the lovely Moiraine and Lan. I love Moiraine, she is a really selfless and strong person as we will see even more later throughout the books. And the way she takes down agents of the Dark One, amazing! We meet the taciturn Lan; I have a crush on him! it's not as strong as my love for Kaladin and Renarin. <spoiler> Spoiler I do always wear my Ring of Malkier! It's also neat to see how Nyneave interacts with Moiraine and Lan.. >spoiler> Spoiler Especially Lan, she is crushing on him hard and I think Lan really admires her too. This is telling to me as Lan doesn't seem to be the flighty type. He must be attracted to really good trackers with a temper! We also meet Min! <spoiler> Spoiler She is my favorite of Rand's lovers! She's awesome! She wears trousers and sees pieces of the Pattern! I have often wondered if there are others with her talent out there in Randland? i won't go too much into her visions as they could give away a lot. Needless to say we end up seeing what these visions or flashes mean throughout the series. What she sees around people are important. it is also interesting to note that she keeps is secret except as far as we know from Moiraine. Is it because of Children of the Light, Aes Sedai, or more? Ugh, Children of the Light. I really hate the organization. They come of as fanatical and suspect everyone who isn't as fanatical as them as a Darkfriend. However, it is interesting to find out how they came about and at the time they formed, you can see why they came to be. And Bella! She is clearly the hardiest of Two Rivers stock! I won't go into much more as the rest of the thoughts I have would be riddled with spoilers and I want people to read what I wrote. I tried to keep my spoilers to a minimum and made sure to forewarn right before a spoiler. I wish Rand and Co luck and hope you avoid Nyneave's thumping stick. She is so awesome by the way! The things she'll do! oooh! I can't wait to read again! Edited January 22, 2019 by whattheHoid 3
+Doomstick he/him Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 (edited) @whattheHoidthat third spoiler is not a spoiler, it’s the prologue title also don’t forget braid-tugging! min spoilers Spoiler It is mentioned in amol that min is what the seanchan call “doomseers” but there hasn’t been one in 2 or 3 centuries I think Edited January 22, 2019 by Doomstick 1
whattheHoid she/her Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Ah, ok I forgot about ^spoiler^ Spoiler The Doomseer title, for Min. Her and Rand's relationship is the most natural I think as compared to Elayne and Rand. Or even Aviendah.
+Sorana she/her Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 So then I'll add my thoughts in a similar way, trying to avoid spoilers, so it's more or less general stuff. @ILuvHats It would be great, if you could edit the title of the thread with a spoiler warning, so that we can discuss more openly. So, as @whattheHoid mentioned we started with Therin. I really liked the way his actions were described, and how you as a reader easily saw through them, how you knew something was off, and still had no real idea what was going on, until Morainne explained it later. Actually that part is one of my favourite scenes in the whole book, if I remember right. Nothing really changed regarding my favourite characters, I still love Lan, he's simply great. His attitude, his behaviour and all that. He's simply great. Nynaeve, is my rang two, followed by Moraine/Min/Egwene. Although Min, only had a short appearance so far, I still remember her from my previous read. What I also liked a lot was the way the Aes-Sedai are presented, and more importantly the reactions of the normal people to them. In my opinion they are introduced as a force, you don't want to mess with, but they are neither positioned as the good or the bad ones, and I like it, when you have different fractions interacting, and not forcefully the good/ bad distinction. Although of course in the end everybody opposing the dark one is good. Another thing that didn't change: cut out Rand, Mat and Perrin and you change nothing... (yes I know how it goes on and what their roles are) But for me they are really hard to understand and to find interesting. Of course that's only my own personal opinion, and not really based on anything. I simply don't like them at all and most of the time am annoyed by their actions and the stupidity. 1
whattheHoid she/her Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 @Sorana Interesting take on Rand, Mat and Perrin! See I think Mat is my favorite as his storyline is super mysterious to me. Like you don't really know his deal right away. I forget where you said you stopped and where Mat's storyline is at that point so I won't go into specifics, but ^spoilers^ Spoiler I love Mat and his Band of the Red Hand and his courtship with Tuon!

I did that myself already by skipping some of the books. It's interesting that out of the three you pick out Mat, because for me he was the hardest to read and to follow. I agree that his storyline as a storyline is mysterious and interesting, but as a character I have a hard time with him. He got "easier" during the last two books, as his behaviour changed but especially at the beginning I find him exhausting...
whattheHoid she/her Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Haha I've got a thing for mischievous and attractive pranksters! I.e. Matt! The next favorite for me is Rand. Perrin is my least favorite as ^spoiler^ Spoiler Faile, I dunno, she can rub me the wrong way sometimes and Perrin just wasn't assertive enough with her or Berlain.

And that's exactly the type of character I usually find exhausting. Just think of Lan. Mysterious, dangerous warrior, loyally bound to someone, following his own morals. I definitly prefer that type.

Speaking of 'understanding that reference', did y'all catch the mentions of Sally Ride, John Glenn, Moscow and America in mythical form? I enjoyed those references, some of which may have been more obvious back in 1990... A few others that I think should be clear by this point in the book (but which I completely missed my first time through) are Lews Therin ~ Lucifer and Merrilin ~ Merlin. 4 hours ago, whattheHoid said: And Bella! She is clearly the hardiest of Two Rivers stock! Maybe y'all should keep an eye on Bela to try to figure out her true allegiances...
whattheHoid she/her Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 (edited) @Just a Lifetime Blood and Ashes! You take that back! Maybe you're the Darkfriend! Bella is the epitome of Light and class! Lan! Hit me up! I wanna see your 7 towers! Edited January 22, 2019 by whattheHoid
old man moomba he/him Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 @Just a Lifetime Spoiler Bella is the Creator. Duh.
Gancho Libre he/him Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Um... i know I'm a little late... but... Shouldn't we put this in a PM? We don't want random people to see this, open it, and get barraged by spoilers.
