(Spoilers for mistborn/stormlight archive) an opinion fight.

Chasmfiend#1

Recommended Posts

Reading/listening to the books and imagining some of the creatures/beings they have. I am curious about a certain fight that's been in my head.

Suppose, for example a group of five steel inquisitors where forced to fight a lone, Adult chasmfiend? Would they be able to beat it, or would the chasmfiend rip them into doll rags as if they where paper?

If you think this would be an interesting battle to see, let me know. I personally, say the inquisitors would be toast.

the inquisitor can fly and stay out of reach of the chasmfiend's claws. attack from its blind spots.

however, the inquisitor needs a weapon that is actually capable of hacking through the chasmfiend's carapace. the oobsidian axes they usually have are no good, they would shatter agains the hard shell. so, the inquisitor wins, but needs a better weapon. also, time, because killing a beast that big requires a slow progression.

Inquisitors do not fly. They push and pull, and their ability to do so would rely on metal anchors, which could be easily scattered by an intelligent, nigh-sentient adult chasmfiend.

I would give this fight to the chasmfiend a majority of the time. Atium is useless if you can't penetrate its armor, all you can do is dodge. Healing only takes you so far until reserves run out. However, the combination of feruchemy & allomancy (with regards to augmenting strength reserves with pewter, for example) would make it a more reasonable fight. Inquisitors would still generally lose fighting in the environments chasmfiends inhabit, though they'd fare better in the chasms than on the plateaus, I think.

They'd have as much chance as the average military trying to take down a mid-sized Kaiju, which is more or less what we'd be talking about.

A few fistfuls of coins scattered about would go a long way to giving them some amount of air superiority (by height if not maneuverability), and they'd be too small and numerous for a chasmfiend to get rid of. If shardbows can do damage then Coinshots would still have a chance, especially with flairing and/or if any Inquisitor had the Crasher combo.  And who knows, if one has feruchemical Fortune and maybe they'd just "get Lucky".

The tactic would be basically the same that shardbearers use: distract and take the legs out one at a time.  Eventually it would be rendered martially inert and they could go in for the kill at leisure.  The downside is that they'd need to deal substantially more damage to each leg than the single shard cut that shardbearers get away with.  It's worth noting that per WOB Roshar has substantially more free Investiture in general than Scadrial, which is on the low end of the spectrum since so much of both Shards was tied up in the actual Creation of the planet and people.  And given that the Chasmfiends are a part of the natural Investiture ecosystem of the place and have Gemhearts (which are crystallizing chemically flawless gems via a Spiritual Realm connection) they might count as Invested enough to resist some of the external Metallic Arts innately.

On the other hand, if they are susceptible to a Soother they might be able to calm it enough to get close for a surprise attack. Or even direct control if having a gemheart is similar to spikes for the purposes of Control (which is a long shot, methinks).

Truth is, even with far less powerful Metallic Arts, the Era2 Scadrians would have a much better chance by virtue of firearms and explosives.

Thanks for helping with this thought I had guys.

Quantus makes a fair point of how inquisitors would HAVE to have coins scattered around in order to stand much of a chance.

Toaster Retribution. Yeah they would need those items to remotely stand a chance in this fight.

All in all, I have all of you an up vote for helping me think through that fight:-]

You say a chasmfiend is too slow? Reread the scene when Kaladin and Shallan are lost in the chasms and a chasmfiend comes. It specifically says that they are definitely fast.

Casmfiend is really fast. The problem is that steels are fast→→. And small.

Along these same lines I've been thinking about a Fullborn vs a 5th Ideal Radiant. I realize that depends on the kind of Radiant, but the amount of Investiture that Radiants have to work with seems to mostly dwarf what Allomancers/Feruchemists have to work with. I'd love to see what some of those interactions look like, too. Like, what happens if a Leecher touches Shardplate? Can a Coinshot push a Shardblade? I'm sure some of these have been answered somewhere, but I honestly think Fullborn vs Radiant would be a nearly fair fight

I don't. A Fullborn dominates damnation near anything. Gold and steel compounding alone are enough to win almost every possible fight.

I don't actually know how steel compounding works. I'll have to look into it

Steel stores speed. A steel compounder can tap endless amounts of speed to the point that everything else seems to be standing still. The compounder could casually walk up to the plated radiant and stab through the eyeslit without fear of retaliation.

It would be very, very difficult, if not impossible, since a Shardblade is essentially a physical manifestation of investiture, and investiture repels investiture. A normal Coinshot can't even affect a feruchemical bracelet, and that's just minorly invested metal. A Shardblade would be an entirely different order of magnitude.

You mean Mistborn vs Radiant. Brandon has said that Vin and Kaladin would be roughly equal, with Kaladin winning in more open spaces and battlefields, while Vin would excel in the cities and urban environments. A Fullborn would be a darn near impossible fight, since they have access to not just a full Allomantic set, but also a full Ferchemical set and thus a full sixteen of Compounding. We're effectively talking Lord Ruler here--and the only reason Vin beat him is because she had a Shard on her side, which effectively trumps Fullborn status.

Kal killed one with nothing but a Shard blade. Five inquisitors would probably reck one. TBH any normal non invested human could kill one with a decent firearm.

"Nothing but a Shardblade" downplays it's importamce just a tad, dont you think?

The blades ability to cut anything was fairly integral to Kal's success.

I doubt a normal firearm would be of much use, it takes a team kf dedicated men with hammers hours to break one open focussing on just a small area.

I am guessing you'd need something explosive to kill it with any kind of speed.

As for the OP, I think it woukd be a tie, I dont think the Inquisitors could hurt the chasmfiend and vice versa.

Then for the the later question, Fullborn > Full Radiant > Mistborn = Pre-plate Radiant.

Anti-tank rifles were in use up until the Korean War. They were man portable & fired from the prone position. I feel fairly confident in their ability to penetrate chitin. What I meant by "just a shard blade" was that Kal was without powers and was basically just a guy with a really "sharp" sword.

An important distinction in regards to the original question would be, are these Inquisitors pre or post TLR's death. Post death they would have had access to compounding (though they never seem to have used it in the books) which would make them hilariously powerful. Compounded steel and pewter would probably let them rip the things legs off bare handed before it even saw that they were there.

Sure, but they fell out of use once tank armour was over 40mm thick. I am under the impression chittin is significantly thicker than that.

He was just a guy true, though the blades cutting abilities make it much more effective than just a "sharp" sword.

This is very true, fullborn or pseudo-fullborn would wreck anything.
