She stood outside, smiling, and put up the sign on the headquarters.

Open.

The Alleyverse needed a place to buy stuff from guilds like the Craftsmen and the DA, and the Alleyvere needed something more importantly than that. Free. Shipping. Free TWO DAY shipping.

Her CEO was Ambrosia, but Ambrosia wasn't here. So she had to open it.

Her manager was Walker. Walker was second highest rank in the company.

Alask stationed himself just a few paces away from the Alleyzon tower. At the top, there would be Flight Control, the people directing each of the many Alleyzon planes to their destination. It was how the company maintained such a fast delivery time.

And Alask was going to rob it.

But he wasn’t going to do it alone, of course. “So,” He said to Lena. “How do you propose we get past security and into the main building? I imagine it will smooth-sailing from there.”

Lena grinned this was going to be interesting.

"We could wait until someone delivers food. Then once the delivery service is gone, we walk over, carrying some empty packages. Claiming the other guy forgot a thank you, we could walk in and put poisoned food on their table."

Thinking for a moment she observed the building.

"How much time do we have? We can also try to tell them we come from Alleyzon and make a control or have a meeting with flight control. But for that to work we would need key cards. Or we disguise us as children, looking for their mum/dad with a surprise birthday present. Get them to tell us a possible name by shaming them into not knowing who we are."

She shrugged:

"Or we tell them, that we are from Alleyzon with a health program, and that every employee gets free apples for work-life-balance. Then we have a reason to walk through the whole tower and they have a reason to eat our food."

She turned around, looked at him and her voice lost all humor, the grin vanished.

"Is there anything I should know? Like not lighting a fire, or shedding blood?"

Her eyes narrowed and her voice turned cold.

"I'm not thumb. You threatened them with an angry shade and I'd prefer to survive this heist. So where is that shade of yours? Can you keep it under control?"

Considering the options, Alask suddenly turned ice-cold at Lena’s change of tone. Turning from the building with hesitation and meeting her stare, he realised he was suddenly scared of her. Like, actually scared. Pancakes and jokes and grins, Alask was completely unprepared for this.

Of course you’re scared, he told himself. These people are theives. They’re tough. They didn’t get here through hugs and rainbows. You’re a theif, too. Start acting like one.

Setting his jaw and taking a deep breath, Alask went to answer Lena, trying hard to mimic her cold tone and hard stare. How’d she pull it off so easily?

“Yes, I can keep it under control,” he said clearly and slowly, trying to articulate each syllable for more effect. “Mostly. As long as we don’t run at night, kindle flame, or shed blood, we should be all fine.” Was his face paling? Rust.

He resisted saying more and looked back at the Alleyzon building. “I say we’re go for the Health Program plan,” he said. Suddenly the heist didn’t feel like fun and games anymore. Lena had been the first one to figure the Shade out, how long would it take for others to follow suit?

Lena observed him for a while, judging his words. That boy really had a shade. The thought was enough to send a shiver down her back. A shade. These things were dangerous as hell. And he wasn't doing a good job hiding it. Paling when he told her, he could control it, looking away as soon as he finished speaking. How he tried to appear stronger. At least he attempted to hide his fear.

"Mostly?"

Arching an eyebrow she shook her head.

"That doesn't sound like you actually can."

With a sigh she stepped closer. Scared, he was scared. Of her. And if she was honest with herself, he was right. He should be scared - of them all. She lowered her voice, softened it a bit, to not sound threatening herself.

"Listen. If you want to keep it a secret you shouldn't threaten people with that shade of yours."

She observed him again, his posture - just like her brother. Inwardly cursing herself she added.

"And if you care for a piece of advice from someone who grew up with a lot like those at the house: keep it secret. A shade can be a powerful weapon. And there are many that would kill for something a lot less dangerous."

Her grin crept back on her face.

"I poison people, and I'm good at it. That's my weapon. I don't need a shade. So let's trade. You keep it from killing me, and I'll keep your secret?"

Thinking of what was to come her eyes brightened. It had been a while since she last poisoned someone. And this new concoction, she was excited to see how it would work.

"Let's go shop some apples."

Alask nodded wordlessly, thinking over what Lena had said. The Shade was his weapon. He still didn't think Lena completely understood, that the Shade only ever came out when someone broke the Rules, and when it did come out, Alask had no control. He couldn't harness it as a weapon, or if he could, not one he could exactly 'aim' anywhere. Lena grinned, and Alask found he wasn't able to return it, just nodding, not trusting himself to say more. She'd proposed a deal. Keeping his secret if he kept the Shade in check.

"Yeah," Alask said quietly. "Yeah, I accept your deal."

Looking around, he spotted some apple trees around the building. "Those could be helpful," he said, pointing to the trees, and walking over to pick some apples. The spikes in his chest still thrummed and ached, the Shade inside dormant. Alask had searched any files he could get his hands on about cognitive shadows being spiked into people. Usually, you could communicate with it. But a Shade was more animal than human.

It couldn't speak to him, but it could show its emotions. It happened every time Alask went near a person, every time he went near silver. A little hum of displeasure. Of course, to get the Shade to do anything else than hum he would need to break one of the Rules to enrage it, something he wasn't too keen on doing now.

Taking back a little group of apples he looked to Lena. "This enough?" he asked.

Chekov's gun. So now the Shade has to be let loose at some point. :P

Lena nodded, satisfied. When he walked over to the apple trees she followed, tried to see where he kept that shade. Her grandmother had spoken of smokelike creatures with talons long as a forearm. And horns, four horns over a mouth full of sharp teeth. That meant a pouch? Or a bottle? Nothing. Maybe he could call it to do his bidding.

Picking up some apples herself, she made sure they were looking healthy and tasteful.

"This enough?"

Alask asked after a while, his arms full with apples.

"I have no idea how many work there."

Lena replied thoughtfully, then sat down on the ground and started poisoning the apples. Every single one of them. You never knew which one Flight Control would pick. When she was finished, she put them into a bag and stood up.

"You're ready to go?"

I want to stress that Lena thinks of the shade like you would of some explosives. Dangerous to carry around but contrlable to a certain degree. She has definitly no idea, that it was spiked into you, nor how dangerous they can be.

You're right. Didn't really realize it until now. And Lena's my only char I didn't name after a character of a book. Though there is a story behind that name as well ;)

"What guards? We haven't docked yet?" Zack said, looking back and seeing that Greta had beaten up a pair of bombs. He dropped them out before they could explode, and nobody noticed them going up in mid air.

Zack will really want to fight the guards. Also, the pilots were trained by Walker, so they are fairly good fighters.
