genetics from parents, plus some sort of difference caused by different chromosomes I believe

But like why the height difference. Why.

Because estrogen causes the growth plate in bones to fuse together, preventing growing. Men have less estrogen, and thus grow in height longer and faster, once they hit puberty.

wow, cheeseman has fancy answers. I was just gonna say that the hormones, like testosterone, are more present in guys and they cause more growth.

Nah, can't be. This would not explain why there's so much variation within the same gender, since hormone levels are generally similar. Like it might contribute somewhat if that's the case (personally I've never heard of estrogen causing growth plates to fuse, but I'm not an expert) I'm not sure that we actually have a ton of info as to why men tend to get larger. And it's possible that it has something to do with hormones, but if that's the case, I would lean more towards it being a difference in the regulation of growth hormones (for example it's quite common for girls to grow way faster than boys, but boys just keep growing for a lot longer).

Hm. But it's still unfair.

it does have more to do with hormones, and also, hormone spread can be quite different within a gender. I'm sure there is more to it than this, but this is a part of it (the hormones, I'm not sure about the estrogen)

This is also true, but it lends more to bone and tendon density, and muscle mass.

So, does gender actually influence height

Somewhat, but genetics also plays a part. If your parents were tall, you'll probably be tall. If your parents were short, you'll probably be short. It's "just" the way the human body works.

Mostly through hormones, but there is probably some other stuff.

Yep.

yeah, the genetics cause the hormone stuff

Being short makes it easier to hide. And get lost.

It's rather fun.

Nope. Not fun at all. Especially when everyone is freaking taller than you. (Okay not everyone, but I still feel small)

I'm not known explicitly for being small, just I hate my height.

What advantage does a small person have over a tall person?

stuff like insa said, hide and seek, capture the flag, balance (usually), stuff like that

I mean, when it comes to athletics being small sucks. Playing basketball against 6' tall boys in PE is not the most fun experience

Nah. People still find a way to hit you in the head anyways.

I don't consider myself as a star athlete in any sport but I do consider myself athletic, but my height drags me down most of the time.

well, getting hit in the head is a whole different thing. Most people aim for the 'chest' but if your head is where my chest would be, then they'll hit your head.
