Mr. Suit

Can spren - like Syl - be pierced by hemalurgic spike? Will it give some effect?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes. A spren can be pierced by Invested metal…

Oversleep

Could it be spiked?

Brandon Sanderson

Could a spike be used to give abilities to spren? That’s not going to work really well.

Oversleep

Could you steal from a spren?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, you could steal the Investiture of a spren. Any Investiture can be used in a spike if you know what you’re doing. It’s actually not that hard to use one on a spren.

Oversleep

Because I thought you said Hemalurgy needs moving blood.

Brandon Sanderson

It needs, uh, yeah… there are places where spren have more physical form, more tangible form.

Questioner

Roshar?

Brandon Sanderson

No, no, no, not Roshar.

Questioner

The Cognitive Realm on Roshar?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, if you go to the Cognitive Realm on Roshar the spren act differently than they do.

Oversleep

So you could spike in the Cognitive Realm?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah I’ll leave a RAFO with you on that. That’s your fifth one. So there are ways to get any Investiture into Hemalurgy if you know what you’re doing. But yeah this is not something that would be a common use for Hemalurgy. Let’s just say that.

Oversleep

We do not concern ourselves with common uses.

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, I know you don’t. But yeah Hemalurgy, when you’re spiking into somebody you… you’ll see when we get around to it.

You can definately store investiture in the spike, but I doubt you could retrieve it easily.

The act of turning a pointy Piece of metal is Investing it, taking a chunk of SpiritWeb and anchoring it to the Physical form of the Spike.  But there's not any way to get that energy back out, short of just Using the Spike on somebody.  And in general terms of Investiture Storage, Hemalurgy is literally the worst we know about, in the sense that it's the only known End-Negative system.  I think I recall that you can technically Use a Charged Spike as a Metelmind and vice versa because they just inhabit different bits of the metal, but that it would reduce the efficiency of both as if they were impure allows.

I'm not sure that you can. Spiking someone steals their ability to perform that method of investiture, rather than stealing free-floating investiture. So  you can steal the ability to burn bronze, but you don't store bronze. You steal the ability to surgebind, you don't steal the stormlight. You can spike a spren, and steal something from it--it's life essence or it's soul, or whatever--but that doesn't steal stormlight.

To add to what @Quantus said about how a hemalurgic spike already does store Investiture, feruchemy is a much better way to do it since that system is designed to do that and you can actually get the Investiture out again without a net loss. Brandon has also said that storing stormlight in metal is hard.

Since Stormlight and Breath are both investiture, would it be possible to use Nightblood with the former rather than the latter? Would it be possible to store Stormlight in metal using Feruchemy?

Brandon Sanderson

Mixing the magics is possible, but some are easier and more natural than other. Feeding Stormlight to Nightblood is easy. Storing stormlight in metal is tough.

You can however store Breath in metal (without Awakening it) pretty easily. However, we know that storing anything in an already-Invested hemalurgic spike is harder if not impossible because there's only so much 'space' in the metal in which you can store Investiture.
